Democrats and other observers slam deployment of US immigration agents to airports as dangerous and source of tension.
Published On 23 Mar 2026
Immigration agents have begun deploying to some airports in the United States as a federal government funding battle has led to long delays and staffing problems at airports across the country.
The Reuters news agency reported on Monday that the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) confirmed it has begun deploying hundreds of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents to assist in security at airports facing significant staffing issues.
Officials told Reuters that ICE and Homeland Security Investigations officers were being deployed to more than a dozen airports across the country, including New York’s John F Kennedy International Airport and Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport.
CNN also reported that at least four ICE agents were seen at Newark Liberty International Airport in New Jersey outside New York.
The deployment comes as congestion has soared at US airport security screening stations due to a weeks-long budget standoff over President Donald Trump’s mass deportation drive.

Some DHS funding has lapsed since February 14 as Democratic Party lawmakers demand reforms in the wake of Trump’s deadly immigration crackdown in Minnesota.
One of the DHS agencies whose funding has been cut is the Transportation Security Administration (TSA), the agency responsible for airport security screenings, meaning its staff have worked for weeks without pay.
Many TSA agents have begun calling out from work, and more than 300 employees have quit since the shutdown began, according to DHS.
Speaking to reporters on Monday, Trump said he had requested that ICE agents deployed to US airports remove their face masks. “I don’t like it for the airport, and I believe they are willing to do that,” he said.
Tom Homan, the US border security chief, said on Sunday that ICE agents would assist TSA workers in areas that do not require special training or expertise.
“While adhering to all the security guidelines and the protocols, we’re simply there to help TSA do their jobs in areas that need their specialised expertise,” Homan said in an interview on CNN’s State of the Union programme.
“There are roles we can play to release TSA officers from the nonsignificant roles, such as guarding an exit, so they can get back to the scanning machines and move people quicker.”
But Democrats and other observers have raised serious concerns about the presence of ICE agents at airports, saying the deployment will fuel tensions.
“The last thing that the American people need are for untrained ICE agents to be deployed at airports all across the country,” House Democratic leader Hakeem Jeffries told CNN on Sunday.
“We’ve already seen how ICE conducts itself. These are untrained individuals when it comes to doing the current job that they have, for the most part – let alone deploying them in close exposure and highly sensitive situations at airports across the country.”
Even some members of Trump’s own Republican Party have expressed opposition to the new airport security plan with Republican Senator Lisa Murkowski calling it a “bad idea”.
“What we need to do is, we need to get the DHS issues resolved. We need to get the TSA agents paid,” Murkowski told reporters at the Capitol in Washington, DC, where the Senate held a rare weekend session. “Do you really want to have even additional tensions on top of what we are already facing?”
Everett Kelley, president of the American Federation of Government Employees, which represents more than 50,000 TSA employees, also condemned Trump’s plan.
“Our members at TSA have been showing up every day without a paycheck because they believe in the mission of keeping the flying public safe,” Kelley said on Sunday.
“They deserve to be paid, not replaced by untrained, armed agents who have shown how dangerous they can be.”

Many big and far-reaching decisions have been taken in the important meeting of the Cabinet held at the Himachal Pradesh State Secretariat. In this meeting, taking strict steps against the increasing drug addiction in the state, a historic decision has been taken to ban people involved in the black business of ‘Chitta’ (synthetic drug) from contesting Panchayat elections. Along with this, many important proposals related to health, education and infrastructure have also been approved.
The Cabinet has taken a tough decision to make Panchayati Raj institutions drug free and clean. Those against whom Chitta (synthetic drug) cases are registered or whose charge sheet has been filed in the court, will no longer be able to contest Panchayat elections.
The most important thing is that it will not be necessary to be declared ‘guilty’ by the court for disqualification from contesting elections, only the filing of charge sheet will be sufficient. However, accused in other (non-synthetic) cases under the Narcotics Prohibition Act (NDPS) are currently kept out of this rule. To give legal implementation to this decision, the state government will present a bill in the upcoming assembly session.
Preparations for elections are in full swing under the three-tier system of Panchayati Raj institutions in the state. Presently the process of delimitation, preparation of voter lists and reservation roster is going on. According to the clear instructions of the Supreme Court, Panchayat elections are to be conducted in the state before May 31.
Many important approvals were also given in the cabinet meeting to upgrade medical and education facilities. Government schools affiliated to CBSE will now have a separate cadre. Earlier 134 schools were decided for this, the number of which has now been increased to 151. Approval has been given to open new ‘Bio Physics Departments’ in three major medical colleges of the state – IGMC (Shimla), Hamirpur and Ner Chowk Medical College. The purchase of state-of-the-art PET Scan machine for Tanda Medical College has also been given the green signal. Besides, approval has also been given to create inter-college in medical colleges.
The government has taken a big step to ensure uninterrupted supply of domestic gas to the people of the state. To ensure that there is no shortage of LPG in future, the Cabinet has approved the proposal to further strengthen and strengthen the ‘City Gas Distribution System’.
A very painful and disturbing incident has come to light from Panipat city of Haryana. On Sunday, a 22-year-old youth ended his life by hanging himself after a dispute with his wife in Satish Colony, Chautala Road of the city. It is being told that the young man had made a video call to his wife just before committing suicide and hanged himself in front of her. After this incident, there is chaos in the family of the deceased and his mother is crying badly.
In the information given by the uncle of the deceased, Vimalkant’s wife was in her maternal home for some time and there was tension between the two. On Sunday (22 March), Vimalkant was talking to his wife on phone and convincing her to return home. It is alleged that the wife flatly refused to come back and said about divorce on the phone itself. The matter escalated so much that she angrily told her husband to “go and die somewhere.”
Vimalkant was so hurt by these words of his wife that he immediately made a video call to his wife and hanged himself with his dupatta in the room in front of her. As soon as Vimalkant was about to hang himself, the phone slipped from his hand and fell on the floor and broke.
According to family members, since Sunday (22 March) was a holiday, Vimalkant was at home, while other family members had gone to the factory for work. When the family returned from work at around 4 pm, they saw that the door of Vimalkant’s room was locked from inside. Even after shouting a lot, when there was no response from inside, he somehow broke the door. Seeing the scene in the room he was shocked; Vimalkant’s body was hanging inside.
The deceased has been identified as 22-year-old Vimalkant, who was originally a resident of Kanpur, Uttar Pradesh. He was living in Panipat with his family for some time and was working as a laborer in a private factory. Vimalkant was married only last year, in April 2025. Just after a year of marriage, this tragic incident has turned all the happiness of the family into mourning.
As soon as information about the incident was received, the police team reached the spot and took the body into their custody. At present, the police has kept the body in Panipat Civil Hospital (mortuary) for post-mortem. The police is investigating the case thoroughly on the basis of the statements of the family members and further legal action is being taken.
The Earth’s climate is in a “state of emergency”, according to the United Nations which has warned it is more out of balance than at any other time in observed history.
The World Meteorological Organisation (WMO), which is the UN’s weather agency, predicted that rapid and large-scale changes to the global climate in recent decades would trigger harmful repercussions lasting centuries.
It comes as rising greenhouse gas concentrations in the atmosphere drive global warming and melt ice.
The WMO’s annual “state of the global climate” report, released on Monday, also highlighted the impact in 2025 of intense heatwaves, heavy rainfall, wildfires, drought, tropical cyclones, storms, and flooding, including widespread death and vast economic losses.
It further demonstrated the cascading impacts that extreme weather events were having worldwide, including food insecurity and displacement, and health risks driven by shifting rainfall patterns, like mosquito-borne dengue disease and heat stress.
UN secretary-general Antonio Guterres warned the global climate is in a “state of emergency”.
“Planet Earth is being pushed beyond its limits,” he said. “Every key climate indicator is flashing red.”
The report confirmed that 2015 to 2025 represented the hottest 11 years on record, with data showing last year as the second or third hottest ever documented.
It also revealed that Earth is close to breaching the key warming threshold of 1.5C – beyond which increasingly severe and compounding climate impacts are triggered – with the figure recorded at 1.43C last year.
Furthermore, the WMO found the accelerating amount of heat in the world’s oceans, which stores more than 91% of the excess heat in the Earth’s system, means the planet is moving to timescales of committed climate change for centuries.
Meanwhile, the planet’s energy imbalance – the rate at which energy from the sun enters and leaves the Earth – reached a new high in 2025.

At the same time, heat-trapping greenhouse gases like carbon dioxide, methane and nitrous oxide have risen to their highest level in at least 800,000 years.
WMO secretary-general Celeste Saulo said: “Human activities are increasingly disrupting the natural equilibrium and we will live with these consequences for hundreds and thousands of years.
“On a day-to-day basis, our weather has become more extreme.”
The report also outlined how climate data, early warning systems, and integrated climate services for health can protect people as the temperature rises.
