After warmest day of the year so far, Met Office warns of ‘cold plunge’ and chance of snow | UK News

0

Britain will return to colder weather with a chance of snow for some – only days after much of the UK saw a week of sunshine.

Warmer weather brought the hottest day of the year so far on Wednesday, with temperatures peaking at 20C (68F) in some parts of the country.

But temperatures across the UK are forecast to plummet from Sunday down to single digits by next Wednesday.

Find out the forecast for your area

Temperatures are expected to hover at or a little below average, with frequent showers and blustery winds, as the week progresses, the Met Office said.

Met Office meteorologist Alex Deakin said Wednesday will signal a “cold plunge”, with possible snow in Scotland.

The drop in temperatures comes just days after Scotland recorded its warmest day of the year on Friday, with a peak of 20.2C recorded in Fyvie Castle, Aberdeenshire.

Mr Deakin said: “If we look at the temperature profile for the next few days, then we really notice that difference by the time we get to Wednesday.

“Temperatures by Wednesday (will be) single digits for many, and that’s the max, so it’s going to get cold at night.

“Probably the peak of that cold will be on Wednesday night, that’s when the cold plunge really comes in.”

Parts of northern Scotland could see snow on Wednesday night and into Thursday morning, which would be a “shock to the system” after the conditions enjoyed by many this week, Mr Deakin said.

“We could easily see some snow over the hills in Scotland,” he said.

“Nothing unusual about that at this time of year, but it will feel different because it has been so warm and sunny for many of us over recent times, so you’ll get that shock to the system.”

The Met Office said the rain and wind will ease later in the week but temperatures are likely to remain cool, with the potential for overnight frost in some areas.

Army chief was asked about woman ‘murdered by British soldier’ – his response was emphatic | World News

0

The murder of Agnes Wanjiru hangs over the British Army Training Unit in Kenya (BATUK).

The long-time training post is headquartered in the hometown of the 21-year-old single mother who was dumped in a hotel septic tank after being brutally murdered in 2012.

The man accused of killing her, Robert Purkiss, was stationed in Nanyuki for a training stint with BATUK.

It took two months for the Kenyan authorities to find Agnes’s body and 13 years for an arrest warrant to be issued for the former British soldier charged with her murder.

Her death has had such resounding impact, all these years on, that a Kenyan parliamentary defence committee launched a two-year inquiry into the conduct of the BATUK.

Last October, Agnes’s niece Esther told me that the spirit of her aunt cries out and that it will not rest until justice is served. The picture she described of Agnes’s suspended soul seeking resolution feels more real than imaginary.

A visit from a celebrated Kenyan-born British army chief to his training troops meant I was able to put questions to him on the grievances of Agnes’s family and others, who claim grievous harm at the hands of his troops.

General Sir Roland Walker responded to my request to share a message with Agnes’s family. He was firm and emphatic when he delivered a response.

He said: “This has got to follow all the way through to the full investigation and the legal proceedings, and this has got to be seen in the light of a court and judged in accordance with the laws of this land.

“That’s what has to happen – justice has to be done, and justice has to be seen to be done.

“That is a business for the courts, and the lawyers, and the police, and the investigation.”

Agnes Wanjiru’s family welcome extradition proceedings

Rose, Agnes’s older sister who raised her late sibling’s daughter, is hopeful.

After years of Agnes’s murder being buried, Rose’s daughter Esther has managed to break through the stagnation and take meetings with UK Defence Secretary John Healey in Nairobi and London.

Purkiss is in custody in the UK while court hearings over his extradition continue. He vehemently denies murder, according to his lawyers.

Scrutiny on British troops in Kenya

The visit from the army’s operational chief is a huge moment for the British troops training there. The UK-Kenya defence agreement is being scrutinised by Kenya’s parliament and the public.

The two countries entered into a series of defence partnerships only months after Kenya gained independence from Britain.

For people in Nanyuki, the British never left. The market town was first set up as a white frontier settlement in the 1920s after the mass expulsion of Maasai from the Laikipia plateau by British colonial forces.

Kenyan MP Caleb Amisi believes that local communities in areas of British military activity still see them as colonial overlords.

Image: Kenyan MP Caleb Amisi speaks to Sky’s Yousra Elbagir

He is on the parliamentary defence committee that investigated claims of BATUK violations and is calling for the Defence Cooperation Agreement (DCA) to become more balanced.

Mr Amisi said: “[Kenyans] believe that UK takes advantage, being the superpower, against the third world countries like Kenya. UK is advanced, militarily, economically, and therefore they’ll be an interdependence of a country like Kenya towards the UK.”

Complaints against British unit

There have been thousands of complaints of violations of conduct by the BATUK from local communities, ranging from murder and rape to environmental damage.

Agnes's family grieve for her

The Lolldaiga Hills were damaged by a fire during a BATUK training exercise in 2021 that destroyed at least 7,000 acres of conservational land. The UK Ministry of Defence accepted responsibility for the fire and reportedly paid out £2.9m to thousands of complainants in compensation.

What does the British Army’s chief of general staff – born in Kenya and raised here until he was eight years old – make of the sentiment that the British military presence is an occupying force and extension of colonialism?

“I don’t recognise it,” Sir Roland told me.

“We are here at the invitation of the Kenyan MOD. We have no right to be here at all. We recognise this is an extraordinary privilege to be able to do what we do in somebody else’s country.”

Some families have faced irreparable loss. In one herding family in Samburu, a son was killed during a BATUK live firing exercise. Another young woman is now severely disabled after she was hit by a BATUK truck that drove off, according to her mother.

General Walker said: “We absolutely recognise that if they have suffered harm as a consequence of anything that we might be responsible for, it is very important, that they have a voice and that voice is heard.”

He added that “we want to facilitate them speaking to the correct authorities, so the right investigations take place, so the right remedies and redresses can follow. So due process is needed”.

For Agnes’s family, the loss is irreversible. Any justice achieved can lay the ground for closure and peace for them, but it will never bring her back.

Transgender golfer Hailey Davidson sues LPGA over gender eligibility policy

0

NEWYou can now listen to Fox News articles!

Transgender golfer Hailey Davidson has sued the LPGA and USGA for its policies that prohibit biological males who underwent male puberty from competing in women’s competition.

The LPGA said in a statement it was aware of the lawsuit and would “let that process play out on the proper forum.”

“The LPGA’s gender policy was developed through a thoughtful, expert-informed process and is grounded in protecting the competitive integrity of elite women’s golf,” the statement said.

The USGA and LPGA changed gender policies for events in 2025 and beyond, declaring that players must be assigned female at birth or have transitioned to female before going through male puberty to be eligible to compete.

The 33-year-old Davidson didn’t transition until after puberty. Davidson competed in a U.S. Open qualifier and LPGA Qualifying School under a different policy in 2024, falling short in both efforts.

Davidson claimed in the lawsuit that the new policy effectively bans transgender women from competing in USGA women’s events or the LPGA because many states prevent children from taking hormones or blocking puberty.

EX-NCAA WOMEN’S RUNNER INVOLVED IN SCOTUS BATTLE OVER TRANS ATHLETES SPEAKS OUT AFTER JUDGE ADVANCES CASE

When the USGA denied Davidson entry into the qualifier, Davidson claimed the Hackensack Golf Club violated the law by saying the USGA controlled all decisions regarding eligibility. Davidson began hormone treatments in Davidson’s early 20s in 2015 and in 2021 underwent gender-affirming surgery, which was required under the LPGA’s previous gender policy.

Davidson also filed a lawsuit against the women’s golf tour NXXT in December after it changed its policies to prevent biological males from competing against females.

NXXT and its attorneys from America First Legal filed its motion to dismiss in February, and believe the suit will be thrown out.

“We are asking the courts to dismiss the claims, and we’re addressing the matter,” NXXT Golf CEO Stuart McKinnon told Fox News Digital.

“This was about simply protecting women’s sports. So the goal was really clarity and competitive integrity, and, as a professional tour, we believe it was our responsibility to define those categories.”

NXXT was one of the first women’s tours that stepped up to make a policy change. The LPGA then changed its own policy to bring about more restrictions to protect the women’s category in December 2024.

Khabaron Ke Khiladi: Will BJP make a dent in Mamata’s stronghold? Analysts explain how different Bengal elections are from 2021 – Khabaron Ke Khiladi Will The BJP Breach Mamata’s Stronghold Explain How Differs From 2021 Bengal Elections

0

The Election Commission announced assembly elections in five states last Sunday. With the announcement of elections, different parties have also started declaring their candidates. The assembly elections of West Bengal are being discussed the most. Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee also released her party’s election manifesto. This week’s news was discussed in Khiladi. Senior journalists Ramkripal Singh, Vinod Agnihotri, Piyush Pant, Awadhesh Kumar, Ajay Setia and Anurag Verma were present for the discussion.

Ramkripal Singh: The politics of electoral violence has been prevalent in Bengal since the time of Siddharth Shankar Ray. There are reports of election violence in Bengal in every phase of elections. The Election Commission has taken a good initiative by announcing voting in two phases. I hope that this time there may be less news of violence as compared to the last elections. Bringing the two national parties Congress and CPI(M) to zero in the assembly elections in West Bengal is a big success of BJP in the last elections.

Ajay Setia: When every party contests elections, it wants to reach power. There is a tougher competition this time compared to 2021. BJP has reached 77 in Bengal, so it will increase further also. There will definitely be an issue of polarization in a state with 30 percent Muslim population. As far as controlling violence is concerned, the Election Commission is working on it in its own way.

Piyush Pant: If you remain in power for a long time, the Indian system becomes a victim of corruption. We should accept this. This is an issue in elections. If only one party remains in power continuously, the system becomes lethargic. All governments have to face this. Governments are also victims of this. In many cases, governments also support it, this cannot be denied.

Anurag Verma: The equation of Muslims and women has been very effective for Mamata Banerjee. Left and Congress are also eyeing this vote bank. But this vote bank of Mamta is intact. This time it seems from the words of Congress that it is trying to contest this election seriously. It remains to be seen how much Owaisi and Humayun Kabir will dent Mamata in this election.

Avadhesh Kumar: BJP should naturally dream of ruling West Bengal. From Hindu Mahasabha to Jan Sangh and RSS, there is a long history here. Mamata Banerjee has very strategically made SIR an issue in this election. Mamta has made this the biggest issue. He has made the issue of collusion between BJP and Election Commission. In 2021, the difference in votes between the two parties was around 60 lakhs. This time the votes cast in SIR are around 63 lakh.

Vinod Agnihotri: The picture of Bengal elections is almost the same as it was in the 2021 assembly elections. There has not been much change in the circumstances. I have never considered SIR as an election issue, because for the one whose name appears in the voter list, it will not be an election issue, and the one whose name is struck off will not be able to vote in the elections, so how will he influence the elections. If we assume that all the votes that will be deducted are from Mamata Banerjee, then it would be wrong.
