Former police special constable jailed for raping child | UK News

A former police special constable has been jailed for 24 years after being found guilty of a series of sex offences including the rape of a child.

James Bubb, who now identifies as a woman named Gwyn Samuels, assaulted the victim multiple times when she was between the ages of 12 and 18.

Samuels was sentenced to a total of 32 years, made up of 24 years’ imprisonment and a further eight years on extended licence, at Aylesbury Crown Court on Friday.

The ex-Metropolitan Police volunteer sexually assaulted the child in public shortly before her 13th birthday.

A jury found Samuels guilty of one count of raping a child under 13, one count of sexual activity with a child, one count of assault of a child under 13 by penetration, and one count of assault by penetration.

They were found not guilty of one count of rape and one count of sexual activity with a child in relation to that complainant, but were also found guilty of one count of rape against a second person.

Sentencing the defendant, Judge Jonathan Cooper said Samuels “abused the most intimate trust of your victims” in “a campaign of abuse against each that was intended to break their will entirely”.

Samuels, who identified as a male at the time of the offences, made contact with both victims online, the first in 2018, when the former police volunteer was around 21 and she was 12 years old.

They then met in person for the first time at a Christian festival a few months later, the court was told.

The second complainant was a woman Samuels met online while posing as a 16-year-old girl.

They met when the woman had just turned 18, and were in an on-off relationship between January 2018 and February 2023.

Samuels started training with the Met in 2020. The first victim said the defendant spoke “a lot about the powers he had” in their role as a special constable.

The second complainant said Samuels used “BDSM and kink as a way of creating control” over her, and that he would “use police training techniques” on her.

“The control, the power he got, it sure as hell wasn’t consensual,” she told police.

The judge said he understands the defendant, who has been in the male prison estate while in custody, will stay there.

“The key point is that you are a very significant risk to women,” Judge Cooper said.

“This is not predicated on your trans status, but on your criminal status.”

Former FBI agents accuse Patel of political retaliation in new suit

0

NEWYou can now listen to Fox News articles!

Two former FBI agents who helped investigate efforts to overturn the 2020 presidential election sued Thursday to challenge their abrupt firings from the bureau, arguing that their terminations were “solely” due to their involvement in the probe.

The two agents, identified only as John Doe 1 and John Doe 2, accused FBI Director Kash Patel and Attorney General Pam Bondi of politically retaliating against them for their work in the 2020 election case, known internally as “Arctic Frost,” despite having played brief and largely administrative roles in the investigation.

The lawsuit argues that the firings are a violation of FBI policy, as well as the agents’ rights under the First and Fifth Amendments of the Constitution. Both former agents are seeking reinstatement to the bureau, and a declaration from the court that their terminations were unlawful.

FBI AGENTS GROUP TELLS CONGRESS TO TAKE URGENT ACTION TO PROTECT AGAINST POLITICIZATION

“Political support for President Trump is not a legal or appropriate requirement for the effective performance of plaintiffs’ respective roles within the F.B.I.,” the lawsuit states. “Accordingly, perceived lack of political support for President Trump is an impermissible basis for termination of plaintiffs’ F.B.I. employment.”

According to the lawsuit, the two agents were fired last fall, within a five-day period, and shortly after, unredacted internal documents related to the Arctic Frost probe were shared with members of Congress.

FBI Director Kash Patel proceeded to “summarily” fire both agents in late October and early November, the lawsuit says, “without evidence,” and without “internal investigation, notice, or hearing” to precede their terminations.

Neither the FBI nor the Justice Department responded to Fox News Digital’s request for comment on their removals, or the new lawsuit. During House testimony Thursday, however, FBI Director Kash Patel dismissed criticism raised by Democrats about terminations within the bureau.

“There’s 36,000 people employed at this FBI,” Patel told lawmakers.

“And I reject the notion wholeheartedly that the termination of those that were weaponizing law enforcement are the only ones that can do the mission,” he added.

The lawsuit argues that the terminations run afoul of FBI policy, which states that non-probationary special agents may be removed only for cause, such as misconduct, national security concerns, or an inability to perform the essential duties or responsibilities of their roles. Both had been lauded for their work at the bureau, it notes, and had received “exemplary” performance reviews and other outside recognition.

“In Arctic Frost, as in all other investigations to which they were assigned, Plaintiffs fully adhered to DOJ policies and procedures, including applicable statutory and regulatory requirements, and executed their law enforcement duties without bias or political motives,” they said in the lawsuit, filed in federal court in Washington, D.C.

Lawyers for the agents also argued the removals break with Patel’s remarks last year during his Senate confirmation hearing, in which he vowed that agents would not be fired based on case assignments, and stressed that personnel decisions “should be based on performance and adherence to the law.”

The lawsuit adds to a growing list of unlawful termination lawsuits filed by ex-FBI agents in recent months, including former agents who have argued they were removed solely for their perceived political views, or for their involvement in certain politically sensitive investigations.

Former Justice Department officials have cited concerns that the probe or any retaliatory measures carried out as a result could have a chilling effect on the work of the FBI, including its more than 52 separate field offices.

The FBI Agents’ Association, or FBIAA, a voluntary agents’ group that represents more than 14,000 active and former special agents, sharply criticized the removals of the two special agents, saying in a statement released at the time that Patel “has disregarded the law and launched a campaign of erratic and arbitrary retribution.”

“An Agent simply being assigned to an investigation and conducting it appropriately within the law should never be grounds for termination,” the group said.

“FBI Agents deal in facts, and we urge Director Patel to do the same.”

MS update kills Microsoft account sign-ins in Windows 11 • The Register

0

Microsoft has broken account sign-ins in Windows 11 25H2 and 24H2 with a recent update, causing error messages in apps like OneDrive and Office.

The glitch affects sign-in operations for Microsoft accounts. Businesses using Entra ID (previously known as Azure Active Directory) for application authentication are not affected.

However, users of Microsoft Teams Free, or anyone signing into Word, Excel, OneDrive, or Microsoft 365 Copilot with a Microsoft account, may see a message along the lines of “You’ll need the Internet for this. It doesn’t look like you’re connected to the Internet” – regardless of whether the device actually is.

According to Microsoft: “This issue occurs when the device enters a specific network connectivity state, and may resolve on its own.” A restart should also fix it, provided the device is online at the time.

“If the device is restarted without an active internet connection,” Microsoft cautioned, “it might return to a connectivity state where the issue can occur again.”

As for a fix that doesn’t involve a weary reach for the big red button – virtual or otherwise – Microsoft wrote: “We are working to release a resolution for this issue in the next few days.” This sounds a lot like yet another out-of-band update to deal with whatever the company broke in the March 10 update for Windows 11 25H2 and 24H2.

It hasn’t been a good year for Windows updates. January brought a string of out-of-band fixes after Patch Tuesday caused woes for some users, including remote desktop sign-in problems and difficulties when saving or opening cloud storage files, which, in some instances, resulted in Outlook hanging if the PST file was stored on OneDrive.

February was relatively quiet in comparison, however, it looks like Microsoft might return to form in March. As well Bluetooth problems for enterprise users with hotpatching enabled, a fix for the latest Windows update malady could end up classified as an out-of-band update.

What a time to be a Windows user. ®

IFSCA issues 60 warnings in FY26 as capital market intermediaries breach compliance norms

The International Financial Services Centers Authority (IFSCA) has issued 60 warnings to capital market intermediaries (CMIs) operating in GIFT City this fiscal year for lapses including unattended offices during business hours, absence of key personnel, weak operational infrastructure and use of remote access software for trading.

The unified regulator, which has been conducting a series of market intelligence visits to assess operational “substance” among registered entities, found that several intermediaries were either non-functional during business hours or lacked key managerial personnel at their registered offices. In multiple instances, neither the Principal Officer nor the Compliance Officer was present, raising concerns over governance and accountability standards.

IFSCA also pointed out structural weaknesses, including inadequate infrastructure to support core business activities and instances where the same individual was handling both compliance and trading roles — highlighting potential conflicts of interest. The regulator further noted the use of remote access tools such as AnyDesk and UltraViewer for trading activities, practices that are inconsistent with the regulatory framework governing operations within the IFSC.

action initiated

IFSCA officials told the businessline that in FY 26 (till date), warnings have been issued in 60 cases and 10 cases have been referred to enforcement. In 51 cases, IFSCA has also issued advisories. “In some CMIs, one common person was appointed both as Principal Officer and Compliance Officer. In a few cases, these instances were repeated despite the issuance of Warnings/Advisories by the Authority to the CMIs…. In some cases, IFSCA officials also observed that the compliance officer was also handling the trading desk, which is a conflict of interest,” IFSCA stated.

“In some CMIs, the designated Principal Officers and Compliance Officers lack adequate awareness of the regulatory framework applicable to Capital Market Intermediaries. Additionally, it was observed that in some cases, only back-office staff were present during inspections,” it added. There are over 175 capital market intermediaries functioning out of GIFT IFSC which includes broker dealers (92) and clearing members (24). There are also smaller number of credit rating agencies, custodians, debenture trustees, depositary participants, distributors of capital market products and services, Global Access Providers, Investment Advisors, Investment Bankers and Research Entities who fall in this category.

These findings by IFSCA point to breaches of key provisions under the IFSCA Capital Market Intermediaries Regulations, 2025, particularly those relating to the physical presence of key management personnel and maintenance of operational infrastructure. Despite prior warnings and advisories in some cases, certain entities were found to be repeat offenders.

Following the inspections, IFSCA has initiated regulatory action against the non-compliant intermediaries and issued a broader advisory to all market participants to ensure strict adherence to regulatory requirements.

As gold prices fall, Gudi Padwa and Ugadi boost jewelery sales in India

0

The over 10 per cent fall in gold prices over the past month has boosted gold jewelery sales on the occasions of Gudi Padwa and उगाडी on Thursday.

The All India Gem and Jewelery Domestic Council estimated that sales were 10 per cent higher compared to last year in terms of value.

On Friday, gold prices fell further by ₹671 to ₹1,47,218 per 10 g against ₹1,47,889 on Thursday. In contrast, silver prices increased by ₹2,491 to ₹2,32,364 per kg against ₹2,29,873 on strong buying support.

Rajesh Rokde, Chairman of the council, said Gudi Padwa was overall good across the country. In Maharashtra, it holds special significance as it marks the New Year. In Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh, similar festivals such as उगाडी were celebrated.

Silver more than double

One of the key reasons behind this is the price trend last year, gold was around ₹88,500, whereas this year it has reached about ₹1.48 lakh.

Similarly, silver, which was around ₹1.03 lakh on Gudi Padwa last year, is now close to ₹2.45 lakh. Customers are well aware that prices in long-term will only go up, he said.

“Attractive offers by jewelers across the country also played a big role in driving this demand. Overall business worth around ₹22,000 crore may have been done on a single day,” he said.

diamond, gems

Dr Saurabh Gadgil, CMD, PNG Jewellers, said there was a strong participation from customers as Gudi Padwa was a key gold-buying occasion in Maharashtra. It also marks the start of the wedding season.

The recent fall in prices further strengthened the buying sentiment with good traction in diamond jewelery and colored gemstones, he said.

“We expect about 20 per cent year-on-year growth in value terms, led by wedding-related demand ahead of Akshay Tritiya, while volume growth may remain in single digits due to the sharp rise in gold prices over the past year, he said.

Luke Littler moves to trademark his face | UK News

Luke Littler has applied to trademark his own face.

The darts sensation has made the move to prevent AI products using his likeness without his permission.

Littler, 19, submitted an application to the Intellectual Property Office, with the move aimed at stopping any unauthorised use of his face and protecting against any copyright breaches.

He has previously trademarked his “the Nuke” nickname in the United States as part of an effort to protect his growing brand.

In the past two years he has won back-to-back world championships and become the most marketable figure in darts.

His face is already used across a range of merchandise, including dart boards, computer games and food products.

And his star continues to rise as he won the night seven of the Premier League in Dublin on Thursday.

Littler admitted he is “still learning not to react to the fans” after silencing those booing him with an astonishing comeback in the final.

While the biggest jeers of the night were reserved for Northern Ireland’s Josh Rock, whose every throw was booed as his miserable Premier League form continued, Littler also drew the ire of the crowd.

But Littler, who hit out at hecklers following a win over Rob Cross at the PDC World Championship in December, had the last laugh after coming from 5-0 down in the final to beat Welshman Gerwyn Price 6-5.

After avoiding a whitewash, Littler celebrated sarcastically and then when trailing 5-1 waved goodbye only for Price to miss three match darts before the teenager produced a remarkable turnaround.

“I’ve definitely learnt a lot, especially with the fans,” he told a news conference.

“In the first game against (Stephen) Bunting I didn’t give anything to the fans, I didn’t give any reaction and got the job done.

“It was the same in the final when I was 5-0 down, everyone doubted me, I definitely doubted myself but I had a little laugh and a joke. I was just having a bit of fun because I knew I was beaten.

“I’m still learning not to react to the fans. I didn’t do much then, only for the first leg, and then I can build on it. It is what it is, people want to see new winners but I’ve won again.”
