New ‘PolyShell’ flaw allows unauthenticated RCE on Magento e-stores

0

A newly disclosed vulnerability dubbed ‘PolyShell’ affects all Magento Open Source and Adobe Commerce stable version 2 installations, allowing unauthenticated code execution and account takeover.

There are no signs of the issue being actively exploited in the wild, but eCommerce security company Sansec warns that “the exploit method is circulating already” and expects automated attacks to start soon.

Adobe has released a fix, but it is only available in the second alpha release for version 2.4.9, leaving production versions vulnerable. Sansec says that Adobe offers  a “sample web server configuration that would largely limit the fallout,” but most stores rely on a setup from their hosting provider.

In a report this week, Sansec says that the security problem is rooted in Magento’s REST API accepting file uploads as part of the custom options for the cart item.

“When a product option has type ‘file’, Magento processes an embedded file_info object containing base64-encoded file data, a MIME type, and a filename. The file is written to pub/media/custom_options/quote/ on the server,” the researchers explain.

Sansec says “PolyShell” is named after its use of a polyglot file that can behave as both an image and a script.

Depending on the web server configuration, the flaw can enable remote code execution (RCE) or account takeover via stored XSS, impacting most of the stores Sansec analyzed.

“Sansec investigated all known Magento and Adobe Commerce stores and found that many stores expose files in the upload directory.”

Until Adobe releases the patch to production versions, store administrators are recommended to take the following actions:

  • Restrict access to pub/media/custom_options/
  • Verify that nginx or Apache rules actually prevent access there
  • Scan stores for uploaded shells, backdoors, or other malware

BleepingComputer has contacted Adobe to ask about when a security update for PolyShell will be made available, but we have not heard back as of publishing.

Squad-backed Democrats lose Illinois primaries in progressive setback

NEWYou can now listen to Fox News articles!

A trio of progressive Democrats backed by members of “The Squad” suffered blistering rebukes on Tuesday as Illinois voters rejected them in favor of more moderate candidates, prompting questions from onlookers about whether the party’s core, and momentum, should be entrusted to the far-left wing of its base.

To James Carville, a longtime Democratic strategist, the answer has been “no” for a long time. Talking to Fox News Digital in response to several progressive candidates losing in Tuesday’s Democratic primary in deep blue Illinois, he questioned the narrative that Squad-aligned progressives are gaining momentum.

“What momentum? About 15% of the Democratic Party identifies themselves as progressive. And what’s unique, they win about 15% in the primaries at most,” Carville said. “This was something I’ve dealt with all my life.”

“In New York, [Zohran] Mamdami got 50.5% — which is not overwhelming. That’s hardly the basis for some national movement,” Carville said, referring to the socialist mayor of New York City.

AIPAC-BACKED CHICAGO DEMOCRAT LOSES PRIMARY DESPITE OUTSIDE SPENDING BLITZ

The progressive losses all came despite high-profile support from some of the most progressive figures in Congress.

Kat Abughazaleh, the 26-year-old Palestinian American running on an anti-establishment platform and promises to implement a “wealth tax,” attracted support from the likes of Rep. Rashida Talib, D-Mich., and Rep. Ilhan Omar, D-Minn, but lost on Tuesday.

Defeated technology entrepreneur Junaid Ahmed told voters he would push for the self-determination of Gaza and implement healthcare for all, earning the support of Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, D-N.Y., Rep. Pramila Jayapal, D-Wash., and Sen. Elizabeth Warren, D-Mass.

And Robert Peters, a state senator who raised $1.1 million on his track record of helping to end cash bail and raising the minimum wage at the state level, garnered backing from Sen. Bernie Sanders, D-Vt, and Warren, but lost his bid for Congress to Cook County Commissioner Donna Miller.

BILLIONAIRE JB PRITZKER SAYS HE’S HAD TO OVERCOME HIS WEALTH, WHICH WOULD BE ‘OBSTACLE’ IN 2028

Between them, they raised $5.7 million.

Anthony Driver Jr., widely regarded as a progressive candidate in Illinois’ 7th District Democratic primary, lost to the more moderate, establishment-aligned Democrat, La Shawn Ford.

Driver was endorsed by Jayapal and the Congressional Progressive Caucus.

Liam Kerr, co-founder of the Welcome PAC, a group that supports moderate Democrats, believes their losses should give the party a clear takeaway.

“Illinois is just the latest reminder that the noise machine around far-left candidates rarely translates into actual votes,” Kerr said.

“There’s a real hunger in this party to win, and the candidates who keep losing are the ones more focused on ideological performance than tried and true economic concerns. The blueprint is simple: ditch the clout-chasing ideologues and invest in hard-working candidates who know their communities.”

Kerr’s framing was echoed by Jim Kessler, vice president of policy at Third Way, a Democrat think-tank focused on moderate platforms.

“Illinois delivered a cold shower to the progressive fringe in the Democratic Party. Every winner was a mainstream Democrat. A lesson Democrats always have to relearn is that mainstream beats extreme,” Kessler said.

But to other onlookers, the results aren’t so definitive. Even as figures like Carville argue far-left policies aren’t a recipe for national success, others see the Illinois losses as far less decisive for progressives than critics suggest.

Pritzker at a press conference

Michael Ceraso, a veteran of the 2016 Sanders presidential campaign, pointed out that some of Tuesday’s winners can’t be swept neatly into the “moderate” camp. He doesn’t believe progressives really even lost the night at all.

“Daniel Biss is a progressive. The dude pushed climate and building regulations in Evanston,” Ceraso said, referring to the winner for Illinois’ 9th Congressional District — the candidate that beat out Abughazaleh.

Ceraso also noted that several candidates backed by Illinois governor J.B. Pritzker won out.

“The Illinois governor is a progressive. He backed [Juliana] Stratton,” Ceraso said, referring to the lieutenant governor-turned Senate candidate who won the Democratic nomination in a high-profile, competitive, contentious, and expensive primary showdown.

“[They] increased the minimum wage, ended the sub-minimum wage for disabled people and protected reproductive care. That’s what progress means: moving toward a goal that lifts others, not protecting the status quo.”

Still, other voices, like that of Adam Green, co-founder of the Progressive Change Campaign Committee, noted that outside groups like the American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC) had focused their attention on defeating the most progressive voices in the election. Green is the co-founder of the Progressive Change Campaign Committee.

“The real debate inside the Democratic Party is not whether progressive economic policies appeal to voters,” Green argued.

“It is whether candidates who genuinely believe in those ideas can compete against industries willing to spend millions to co-opt that message in support of candidates who will never actually challenge power,” Green said.

Having now cleared the primaries, Illinois will hold its general elections on Nov. 3.

NEWYou can now listen to Fox News articles!

Iran’s intelligence ministry has arrested 97 people accused of being “soldiers of Israel,” according to state media reports Thursday.

The arrests are part of the country’s latest security sweep, which has seen hundreds detained over alleged links to Israel and the United States since the start of the war, Reuters said.

Earlier Thursday, state media also cited the police commander of Alborz province as saying 41 people had been arrested for sending videos to opposition media channels based abroad.

On March 10, Iran’s intelligence ministry also reported it had arrested a foreign national, along with 30 other people it described as spies, internal mercenaries and operational agents of Israel and the U.S., according to Reuters.

The latest wave of arrests came in the wake of the assassination of Iran’s intelligence minister, Esmaeil Khatib, in a targeted Israeli strike in Tehran.

Khatib’s death was confirmed March 18 by Israeli Defense Minister, Israel Katz and ten days after the start of Operation Epic Fury and Operation Roaring Lion, both targeting the Iranian regime.

Under Khatib, the intelligence ministry’s role broadened significantly, and it now operates extensive informant networks across universities, media organizations, minority communities and activist circles across the country.

Its agents identify protest organizers, monitor communications and conduct interrogations, according to The Jerusalem Post.

On March 12, the U.S.-based Human Rights Activists News Agency (HRANA) also said Iranian authorities had arrested nearly 200 people on charges related to the U.S.-Israeli war against the Islamic Republic.

Virginia SWAM bill faces legal challenges over race and sex, experts say

0

NEWYou can now listen to Fox News articles!

A Virginia state bill passed along party lines directing state agencies to consider the race and sex of small businesses’ ownership when distributing discretionary funds for procurement and contracts is likely to face major legal headwinds, experts told Fox News Digital.

The Small SWAM Business Procurement Enhancement Program act “provides that executive branch agencies and covered institutions are required to increase their small SWaM business utilization rates by three percent per year until reaching the 42-percent target or, if unable to do so, to implement achievable goals to increase their utilization rates,” according to its text. SWAM stands for small, women-owned, and minority-owned.

Purchases between $10,000 and $200,000 must be set aside to be awarded to SWAM businesses as well, according to the text of the bill drafted by Del. Jeion Ward, D-Hampton.

As the bill approaches Democrat Gov. Abigail Spanberger’s desk, Oversight Project vice president of legal Kyle Brosnan told Fox News Digital it appears par for the course for the way Richmond is moving.

Brosnan said the bill constitutes “clearly intentional discrimination against White men.”

“Since reclaiming total control of state government, Virginia Democrats have shown their true colors as nothing short of radical ideologues,” Brosnan said.

“By setting race and sex quotas for 42 percent of the state discretionary spending on government contracts, Gov. Spanberger and her far left enablers in Richmond are showing their true colors as radicals.”

Zach Smith, a former federal prosecutor for the Northern District of Florida, added that whenever the government proposes to treat people differently based on race and gender, it is unconstitutional.

“I think we saw the Supreme Court speak explicitly to this with its Harvard and UNC decisions, banning the use of race in admissions in higher education,” he said.

VIRGINIA DEMS INTRODUCE CLASSROOM DEI CURRICULUM LAW ON DAY 1 OF LEGISLATIVE SESSION

“As a result of that Students for Fair Admissions decision, we’ve seen some federal courts apply that same logic to other federal government programs that seek to prioritize minority-owned businesses are treating people differently based on their race and so I would certainly think the same logic would apply to this state law action as well.”

That Supreme Court case saw Chief Justice John Roberts author the majority opinion and Justice Clarence Thomas write a concurrence in a historic decision ending affirmative action in college admissions.

“While I am painfully aware of the social and economic ravages which have befallen my race and all who suffer discrimination, I hold our enduring hope that this country will live up to its principles [that] all men are created equal … and must be treated equally before the law,” Thomas said at the time.

DEM GOVERNOR-ELECT TAPS CROCKETT’S FORMER ‘CHIEF BRAND STRATEGIST’ FOR TOP DEI ROLE

Smith said that even prior to such, the Supreme Court found quotas “impermissible” and that if Spanberger signs the bill there will be business owners who are outraged and will demand accountability.

“I do think there is likely going to be litigation surrounding this because this would involve a federal constitutional issue in addition to other legal claims that may be raised,” he said in a Wednesday interview.

“This could be brought in federal court,” he said, suggesting arguments against it will fall on Fourteenth Amendment grounds.

Brosnan agreed, criticizing the bill’s section requiring Virginia taxpayers to fund $1 million for systems updates, staffing and reporting to “institutionalize discrimination” in his words.

“It also “sets aside” government contracts of up to $200,000 for women and minority owned businesses, so long as their bids are no more than 5% higher than the lowest “noncertified” — read ‘White male-owned’ — business.”

“Did Virginians expect to get this institutionalized wokeism when they voted for the ‘moderate’ governor?” he asked.

The conservative outlet “The Federalist” said the bill instituted “racial rigging” and reported a section of the bill enforces the director of the Department of Small Business and Supplier Diversity to conduct a “disparity study” every five years, which the outlet said translated to determining how to reduce the number of White males winning government contracts.

Macron pushes de-escalation as U.S. and Israel back force against Iran

0

NEWYou can now listen to Fox News articles!

French President Emmanuel Macron on Thursday called for an immediate de-escalation in the Middle East, urging a halt to U.S.–Israeli strikes on critical infrastructure as fighting intensifies across the region.

“France calls for the immediate implementation of a moratorium on strikes targeting civilian infrastructure, whether related to water or to energy,” Macron wrote on X, reinforcing France’s push for diplomacy even as the United States and Israel emphasize military pressure against Iran and its proxies. “Freedom and security of navigation must be restored.”

President Donald Trump recently struck a mixed tone on France’s role, saying he had spoken with Macron and was cautiously optimistic Paris ultimately would help secure the Strait of Hormuz, a critical global shipping route for oil and energy supplies.

MULTIPLE ALLIES DECLINE US CALLS FOR STRAIT OF HORMUZ SUPPORT AMID RISING MIDDLE EAST TENSIONS

On “a scale of 0 to 10,” Trump said Macron had been “an eight.”

“Not perfect, but it’s France,” he said at a press briefing in the White House Monday.

Trump went on to say he believes Macron “is going to help” regarding securing the Strait of Hormuz, but added, “I don’t do a hard sell on them because my attitude is we don’t need anybody. We’re the strongest nation in the world.”

“I’m almost doing it … because I want to find out how they react,” Trump said, suggesting the U.S. is also testing its allies.

In a future crisis, he warned, “I’ve been saying for years that if we ever did need them, they won’t be there. Not all of them, but they won’t be there.”

The divide reflects a broader question shaping the conflict: whether diplomacy can contain Iran’s regional network, or whether force is required to dismantle it.

WORLD LEADERS SPLIT OVER MILITARY ACTION AS US-ISRAEL STRIKE IRAN IN COORDINATED OPERATION

That tension is playing out most clearly over the Strait of Hormuz, a narrow waterway between Iran and Oman that serves as one of the world’s most critical energy choke points, with roughly one-fifth of global oil supplies passing through it each day.

In recent weeks, Iran has disrupted traffic through the strait with drone, missile and naval threats, raising fears of a broader economic shock as commercial shipping slows and global energy markets face increasing uncertainty.

Macron said France “will never take part in operations to open or free” the critical waterway “in the current context,” emphasizing that France is “not a party to the conflict.”

Paris instead has proposed escorting commercial vessels only after hostilities subside, in coordination with regional actors.

At the same time, European allies — including France — signaled they are not entirely stepping back from efforts to secure the strategic waterway.

Leaders of the United Kingdom, France, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands and Japan expressed in a joint statement released Thursday a “readiness to contribute to appropriate efforts” to ensure safe passage through the Strait of Hormuz, while calling on Iran to “cease immediately its threats” against commercial shipping.

A European diplomat told Fox News that the United Kingdom is leading a diplomatic effort to build support among European and Gulf partners for a coordinated response, with discussions underway on how such a mission could be structured.

However, European officials remain divided over timing, with concerns that launching such an effort during active hostilities could introduce new high-value targets into the conflict, according to the diplomat.

France pushes diplomacy across Iran-linked fronts

Lebanon has emerged as a second front in the war after Hezbollah, the Iran-backed militant group, began attacking Israel following U.S. and Israeli strikes on Iran in late February.

The group launched rockets and drones from southern Lebanon, prompting Israeli retaliatory strikes and escalating the conflict into a broader regional confrontation tied directly to Tehran, Iran, and its proxy network.

While distancing itself from direct military involvement, France is intensifying its diplomatic push in Lebanon, urging direct negotiations between Israel and Beirut following signals from Lebanese President Joseph Aoun that he is open to talks.

French officials view this as a “window of opportunity” to stabilize the border and prevent further escalation, arguing that both sides share an interest in preventing Lebanon from becoming a launchpad for attacks against Israel.

But Israeli officials have sharply pushed back, arguing that diplomacy cannot succeed while Hezbollah remains armed and active.

The Israel Defense Forces said Thursday that since Hezbollah joined the fighting following strikes on Iranian regime, the group has launched hundreds of rockets, missiles and drones toward Israel.

Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Sa’ar said Israel has come under sustained attack from Lebanese territory in recent weeks.

“Since March 2nd, Israel has been attacked from Lebanese territory more than 2,000 times with missiles and drones,” he wrote on X Tuesday

Sa’ar warned that the crisis extends beyond the region, calling disruptions to maritime routes “naval terrorism that harms the global economy.”

While expressing openness to normalization with Lebanon, Sa’ar made clear that Hezbollah remains the central obstacle.

“The obstacle to this is Hezbollah,” he said, adding that Beirut must take “meaningful action” against the group’s weapons, funding and leadership.

Analysts say that gap — between France’s diplomatic push and Israel’s security demands — reflects a deeper structural problem that has persisted for years.

France has “potential influence that they never use … essentially the stick,” David Schenker, a former U.S. assistant secretary of state for Near Eastern Affairs who oversaw Lebanon policy during the first Trump administration and now directs the Program on Arab Politics at the Washington Institute for Near East Policy, told Fox News Digital.

He argued that Paris has failed to use its leverage to pressure Hezbollah or its backers.

While Schenker said direct negotiations between the Lebanese government and Israel could be useful, he questioned whether they would change realities on the ground.

“I don’t see how a ceasefire in and of itself changes the status quo,” he said.

TRUMP PRESSES NATO PARTNERS ON SUPPORT AS HEGSETH BLASTS HESITATION

Hezbollah

Lebanese leaders repeatedly have pledged to assert a state monopoly over weapons, but “they haven’t really done much,” Schenker said, adding there is “zero confidence” they would move forward given Hezbollah’s opposition.

Even the Lebanese army has signaled its limits, prioritizing “national unity and the safety of the army above disarmament,” he said.

On the ground, the situation continues to deteriorate rapidly.

Violence in Lebanon has surged dramatically since the war in Iran began.

“There has been a 400% increase in violence events in Lebanon,” said Bassel Doueik, a researcher at the Armed Conflict Location & Event Data (ACLED), adding that Israeli strikes and Hezbollah clashes have displaced at least 1 million people.

Doueik said Israel appears to be seeking to create a buffer zone south of the Litani River in Lebanon, warning the escalation could lead to “another occupation of southern Lebanon similar to 1982.”

At the same time, Hezbollah — long backed by Iran — continues to operate as a powerful armed force inside Lebanon, complicating efforts to reach any durable political settlement.

France has played a leading diplomatic role in Lebanon for years, including backing the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL). But the mission has faced growing challenges, including restrictions on movement and attacks on its personnel, raising criticism about its effectiveness.

Critics argue that repeated diplomatic initiatives have failed to curb Hezbollah’s military buildup, leaving Israel increasingly skeptical of new proposals.

“The French are specializing in carrots,” Schenker said, arguing that Paris has been reluctant to use pressure despite its influence in Lebanon.

But he added that the transatlantic divide is not entirely one-sided.

“This is a war that was launched by Israel and the United States, and they disagreed with it,” he said, noting that protecting global energy flows through the Strait of Hormuz should be “an international responsibility.”

Ruth’s Chris Steak House dress code sparks online debate over ‘proper attire’

0

NEWYou can now listen to Fox News articles!

A popular steakhouse is back in the spotlight over its dress code — and social media commenters have strong feelings about it.

Ruth’s Chris Steak House is drawing fresh attention for its “business casual” dress code requiring “proper attire” — with diners who don’t comply potentially relegated to the bar.

“Kindly remove all hats when entering the restaurant,” its website states. “Guests wearing ball caps are asked to dine in the bar/lounge.”

AMERICANS ARE FED UP WITH TIPPING CULTURE AS NEARLY 9 IN 10 SAY IT’S COMPLETELY ‘OUT OF CONTROL’

“The following attire is not permitted in our dining rooms: Gym wear, pool attire, tank tops, clothing with offensive graphics or language, revealing clothing or exposed undergarments,” the notice continues.

While recent reports have framed the move as a crackdown, the policy has appeared on the restaurant’s website for years, according to internet archives. This suggests the current debate may be driven more by recent enforcement — and viral social media discussion — than a new rule.

The renewed attention comes as Florida-based Darden Restaurants, which acquired Ruth’s Chris in a roughly $715 million deal in 2023, continues to position the brand within the fine-dining space while operating more than 2,100 restaurants across multiple chains, according to The Associated Press.

Darden’s portfolio includes Olive Garden, LongHorn Steakhouse and Seasons 52.

“Ruth’s Chris isn’t fine dining, it’s like one step up from Outback,” one person commented on X. “This is going to make a lot of people not go.”

Another person agreed with that assessment, calling it “the Applebee’s of expensive steakhouses.”

Some also suggested the dress code could alienate customers.

One internet user claimed the policy “is trying to create an ‘atmosphere’ that intimidates people and drives them away.”

Others raised practical questions, especially about warmer climates and tourist hotspots. In beach towns or summer destinations, hats and tank tops can be more about comfort than casualness, prompting some to wonder how consistently the rules can be enforced.

Even within Darden’s portfolio, dress expectations vary. The Capital Grille, another upscale brand, encourages elegant attire but does not explicitly ban hats — though it still restricts athletic wear and overly revealing clothing, People reported.

Some diners, however, applaud the policy.

“Thank God, a return of decorum for a much too casual society,” one commenter wrote.

“It’s OK not to wear your baseball cap in some settings,” the person added. “It’s alright to dress up once in a while. Leave your sweats at home. Make an attempt at stepping up your game!”

Someone else called for more restaurants to “bring back elegance and class to fine dining.”

But it’s not the first time tensions have flared over the restaurant’s policy.

In 2015, gospel artist Marvin Sapp said he and members of his group were denied service at a Chicago Ruth’s Chris over attire, later alleging the dress code was applied selectively, according to multiple reports at the time. The restaurant ultimately issued an apology following public backlash.

Crossbows to be banned after series of violent attacks | UK News

The selling of crossbows and hunting arrows will be banned under government plans following a series of violent attacks.

The Home Office said existing crossbow owners will also need a licence.

It follows the death of BBC racing commentator John Hunt’s wife and two of his daughters, who were murdered in a crossbow and knife attack at their family home in July 2024.

Kyle Clifford, 26, is serving a whole-life order after killing his ex-partner Louise Hunt, 25, her sister Hannah Hunt, 28, and their mother Carol Hunt, 61, in a quiet cul-de-sac in Bushey, Hertfordshire.

Currently, there is no registration system for owning a crossbow, which Sky News found to be readily available to buy online, and no requirement for a licence.

But it is illegal for children to buy or own one, and anyone carrying a crossbow in public without a reasonable excuse can face up to four years in jail.

The government, which has promised to tighten rules, has launched a consultation on the plans.

Many responses expressed concerns about how easy it was to obtain one, officials said.

The review was ordered following an attempt to kill the late Queen with the weapon.

Would-be assassin Jaswant Singh Chail was encouraged by an AI chatbot to break into Windsor Castle on Christmas Day in 2021 with a loaded crossbow.

Chail, then 21, was jailed for nine years in 2023 and given a further five years on extended licence after admitting treason, making a threat to kill the then Queen and having a loaded crossbow.

Laura Sugden, who has campaigned for a change in law since her partner, Shane Gilmer, was killed in a crossbow attack in 2018, said she was “relieved and grateful” at the announcement to ban the weapons.

Mr Gilmer, 30, died after his next-door neighbour broke into his home in Southburn, East Yorkshire, and shot him and Ms Sugden, who was left injured.

‘A system that failed to recognise the risks’

She said: “We are relieved and grateful to see that there will be new controls introduced and see that the government is committed to banning the sale of crossbows as well as licensing those in existence.

“For years, we have argued that it was far too easy for people to obtain these lethal weapons.

“Shane lost his life because of a system that failed to recognise the risks.”

In October last year, a public inquiry into the Southport attack heard how killer Axel Rudakubana had contacted two archery retailers when he was 15, asking if they could deliver crossbows in “discreet” packaging, two years before his mass stabbing at a Taylor Swift-themed dance class.

Convicted stalker Bryce Hodgson was shot dead by police after he broke into a London home, armed with weapons including a crossbow, in 2024.
