Meanwhile, the gas cylinder kept in the house also caught fire and exploded. A total of six people including Manoj Puglia died in this accident.

As Gov. JB Pritzker aims to make history as the first Democrat to win three terms as Illinois governor, the potential 2028 presidential contender now knows which Republican challenger he’ll face off against in this year’s election.
Former state Sen. Darren Bailey on Tuesday topped three rivals to win the Republican gubernatorial nomination, the Associated Press reports.

Bailey, a farmer, is a familiar face to Illinois Republicans. The conservative firebrand, strong supporter of President Donald Trump and his MAGA movement, trounced the competition in the 2022 GOP primary before losing to Pritzker by more than 12 points in the general election.
This time around, Bailey defeated conservative commentator Ted Dabrowski, who was backed by some major Republican mega donors, video gambling magnate Rick Heidner, who was able to self-fund from his personal fortune, and DuPage County Sheriff James Mendrick.

Pritzker was unopposed as he cruised to the Democratic nomination.
The governor, a member of the Pritzker family that owns the Hyatt hotel chain and who has launched several venture capital and investment startups, has seen his national profile skyrocket over the past year as he’s become a top Democrat leading the resistance to Trump’s unprecedented second-term agenda.

This year’s gubernatorial election, in which Pritzker is the clear favorite in Democrat-dominated Illinois, is seen by political pundits as a tune-up for the governor as he likely gears up for a 2028 White House run.

Electronic locks were installed in the house, could not open due to power cut
The Police Commissioner informed that the accident occurred around 4.00 am on Wednesday, March 18. Fire tenders were called on the spot and rescue operation was started. By the time the team reached, the fire had spread badly. The reason for this is that an electric vehicle was being charged outside, the fire from the blast there had reached towards the house. Electronic locks were installed in the house. Electronic locks may not be able to be opened after power cut. There will be a provision of such locks in the bedrooms etc. of the house, due to which the house would be locked.
Several blasts took place in front of the police during the rescue operation.
Police said that a large number of gas tanks were stored inside the house. It is estimated that there were more than 10 gas tanks here. There has also been an explosion. Between 4.00 and 4.30 in the morning, two-three blasts took place in front of the police team. The situation was quite frightening. An attempt was made to enter this house from the top floor of the adjacent houses. The smoke kept increasing continuously, but the fire team tried its best to bring people out.
The three people evacuated earlier were saved. Later, 6 people who were rescued lost their lives. It appears that the rest of the people were trapped in other parts of the room’s house. It took a lot of hard work for the rescue team to break through the cracks and reach there. The fire was very scary.
Ukrainian President Zelenskyy says Moscow and Tehran are ‘brothers in hatred’; claims Iran’s drones ‘contain Russian components’.
More than 200 Ukrainian military experts are in the Gulf region and wider Middle East helping governments in their defence against Iran’s drone attacks, Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has said.
In an address to dozens of members of the United Kingdom Parliament in London on Tuesday, the Ukrainian leader said 201 Ukrainian anti-drone experts are in the region and another 34 “are ready to deploy”.

“These are military experts, experts who know how to help, how to defend against Shahed drones,” Zelenskyy said in his speech, referring to the Iranian-designed “kamikaze” drones that Russia has been using in its war against Ukraine since 2022.
“Our teams are already in the Emirates, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and on the way to Kuwait,” the Ukrainian leader said.
“We are working with several other countries – agreements are already in place. We do not want this terror of the Iranian regime against its neighbours to succeed,” he said.
Last week, the Ukrainian leader said military teams had been sent to several Gulf states and Jordan.
Zelenskyy, who met with UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer and NATO chief Mark Rutte earlier on Tuesday, said Russia had received the Shahed-136 drones from the Iranians, who had “taught Russia how to launch them and gave it the technology to produce them”.
“Russia then upgraded them. And now we have clear evidence that Iranian Shaheds used in the region contain Russian components,” Zelenskyy said, describing the drones as designed for “low-cost destruction of expensive critical infrastructure”.
“So what is happening around Iran today is not a faraway war for us, because of the cooperation between Russia and Iran,” he said.
“The regimes in Russia and Iran are brothers in hatred, and that is why they are brothers in weapons. And we want regimes built on hatred to never win – in anything,” he added.
The Ukrainian leader then addressed his country’s newly developed prowess in drone warfare and manufacturing, claiming that 90 percent of Russian losses on the front lines in Ukraine are being “caused by our drones”.
Ukraine has moved on from making sea and aerial drones to producing interceptors that target drones, he said, adding that Ukraine is capable of producing at least 2,000 interceptors per day – half of which are required for its own defence and the remainder available for use by Kyiv’s allies.
“If a Shahed needs to be stopped in the Emirates – we can do it. If it needs to be stopped in Europe or the United Kingdom – we can do it. It is a matter of technology, investment, and cooperation,” he said.
While Ukraine has become one of the world’s leading producers of sophisticated, battlefield-proven drone interceptors, US President Donald Trump has said he does not need Ukraine’s help with countering Tehran’s drones targeting military targets in the Middle East.
After meeting with Zelenskyy at 10 Downing Street, Starmer said Russian President Vladimir Putin “can’t be the one who benefits from the conflict in Iran, whether that’s oil prices or the dropping of sanctions”.
During Zelenskyy’s visit on Tuesday, London and Kyiv signed a deal on a “defence partnership”, which is said to combine “Ukraine’s expertise and the UK’s industrial base to manufacture and supply drones and innovative capabilities”.
Illinois Republicans on Tuesday selected Don Tracy as their nominee for the open U.S. Senate seat created by Sen. Dick Durbin’s retirement, sending them into a general election race in a state Democrats have long dominated at the federal level.
Former Illinois GOP Chair Don Tracy entered the race as one of the best-known Republicans in the field and quickly emerged as an early fundraising leader.
His campaign focused on lowering living costs through market competition, greater consumer choice and negotiated prescription drug prices.
Tracy is seeking the seat being vacated by Durbin, the Senate’s longtime No. 2 Democrat, who announced he would not seek reelection in 2026, ending a Senate tenure that began with his election in 1996 and setting off a scramble in both parties for one of Illinois’ highest-profile offices.

The Republican primary field also included attorney Jeannie Evans, businessman Casey Chlebek, R. Cary Capparelli, Pamela Long and Jimmy Lee Tillman.
Polls in Illinois closed at 7 p.m. Central on Tuesday.
On the Democratic side, Rep. Robin Kelly, Rep. Raja Krishnamoorthi and Lt. Gov. Juliana Stratton are competing to succeed Durbin.
Illinois Gov. JB Pritzker has thrown his sizable war chest behind Stratton in a primary that is viewed as a test of his political clout in his home state as he likely gears up for a 2028 presidential run. The governor has seen his national profile skyrocket over the past year as he’s become a top Democrat leading the resistance to President Donald Trump’s second-term agenda.
Meanwhile, Krishnamoorthi is the clear fundraising frontrunner in the race and has spent big bucks to run ads. And a super PAC funded by crypto titans has shelled out nearly $10 million to back him.
Tracy now advances to the general election, where he will try to compete in a state that has trended decisively Democratic in federal contests. Indeed, whoever wins the Democratic nomination will be considered the clear front-runner in the general election in a state where no GOP contender has won statewide in a dozen years.

Celebrations for what would have been civil rights activist Cesar Chavez‘s 99th birthday are being canceled ahead of what’s being described as “deeply troubling allegations” against the historic figure.
Across the country, several local organizations began canceling their upcoming celebrations in anticipation of an upcoming story that is expected to share concerning reports about the former labor union advocate.
As cancellations grew, the United Farm Workers (UFW), an organization co-founded by Chavez, released a statement on Tuesday confirming allegations were being made, including ones involving abuse of young women or minors. In response, the UFW announced it would no longer take part in any Cesar Chavez Day activities.

“We have not received any direct reports, and we do not have any firsthand knowledge of these allegations,” the statement read. “However, the allegations are serious enough that we feel compelled to take urgent steps to learn more and provide space for people who may have been victimized to find support and to share their stories if that is what they choose.”
The statement continued, “The United Farm Workers will not be taking part in any Cesar Chavez Day activities. Instead, we call on our allies and supporters to take part in immigration justice events and acts of service to support farmworkers or empower vulnerable people in their own communities.”
The Cesar Chavez Foundation also released a statement on Tuesday expressing how “deeply shocked and saddened” the organization was at the allegations.

“In partnership with the UFW, we are establishing a safe and confidential process for those who wish to share their experiences of historic harm, and, if they choose to, participate in efforts toward repair and reconciliation. In addition, we are investing time and resources to ensure the Foundation promotes and strengthens a workplace culture that is safe and welcoming for all,” the foundation said.
It continued, “We ask for our community’s patience as we learn more. Throughout this process, our organization and our partners in the movement will continue our work together to protect and uplift the families and communities that we serve.”
Both the Cesar Chavez Foundation and the UFW referred to their original statements when reached for comment by Fox News Digital.
It is unclear at this time what the source of the allegations are and the details surrounding them.

Chavez has been a longtime-celebrated figure in the Democratic Party as a model for labor rights. However, Chavez has also reportedly spoken out against illegal immigration, calling illegal aliens a threat to union workers.

Taipei, Taiwan – As thousands of Chinese government officials gathered in Beijing for China’s annual legislative meetings known as the “two sessions” this month, at least a dozen active and retired military officers were absent from the proceedings.
Among the absentees was General Zhang Youxia, who has been under investigation since late January for “suspected serious violations of discipline and law”, according to China’s state Xinhua news agency.

Zhang is one of the highest-ranking officials to be caught up in a wider anticorruption sweep that has become a hallmark of Xi Jinping’s long tenure as president and chairman of the Chinese Communist Party.
Xi launched the initiative shortly after rising to power in 2012, setting off an “unprecedented anticorruption storm” that targeted “both high-flying ‘tigers’ and lower-level ‘flies’” across China’s state, military, and Communist Party apparatus, according to a Xinhua report last year.
Recent government reports indicate that Xi has embarked on a renewed sweep through the military leadership of the People’s Liberation Army (PLA), according to Chieh Chung, an adjunct associate research fellow at Taiwan’s Institute for National Defense and Security Research. This time, Xi’s net appears to be even wider, he said.
It now includes operational commanders in addition to members of China’s Central Military Commission and military functional institutions, political commissars, and commanders across the PLA’s five military theatres and various military branches, he said.
Strengthening the PLA in advance of its anniversary
According to China’s official military newspaper last month, corruption remains a priority for President Xi.
“Corruption is the biggest cancer eroding combat effectiveness. The more thoroughly we eliminate hidden dangers, the more promising the century-long battle against corruption will be,” the paper read, according to an English translation.
The PLA’s latest work report – released during the two sessions – placed the fight against corruption as equal to other goals like “political rectification” and ensuring loyalty.
The anticorruption drive comes as the PLA prepares to mark its 100th anniversary in August 2027, when it will take stock of its decades-long modernisation campaign.
Tristan Tang, a non-resident Vasey Fellow at the Honolulu-based Pacific Forum research institute, told Al Jazeera that Zhang and other military targets reflect Xi’s long-running dissatisfaction with management of the armed forces.
The Chinese leader renewed his focus on the military between 2016 and 2017, according to Tang. The more recent removals should be seen as an extension of that campaign, he said.
“My interpretation is that the leadership has discovered longstanding problems in the PLA’s personnel system. That may explain why a large number of generals and admirals have been removed or investigated while many positions remain unfilled – because officers across the system, possibly even senior colonels, are undergoing re-evaluation and investigation,” Tang told Al Jazeera.
“As a result, when a unit commander is purged, it does not necessarily mean there was a problem within that unit; the issue may stem from actions taken in a previous post,” he said.

‘Missing or potentially purged’
Zhang and his ally General Liu Zhenli have been two of the most high-profile cases to date, but dozens of officials have been removed in recent years.
According to one estimate from the US-based CSIS China Power Project, about 100 senior officers in the PLA have been “purged or potentially purged” since 2022.
The list includes 36 generals and lieutenant generals, according to a late February report, and 65 officers who are “missing or potentially purged” based on their absence from important meetings.
While corruption has been cited as the official reason in many cases, security experts across East Asia have been trying to assess what it could mean for one of the world’s most powerful militaries.
Zhang and Liu, who were removed around the same time, are members of China’s powerful Central Military Commission, where Xi has cleaned house over the past year, according to Kunihiko Miyake, a former Japanese diplomat and research director of the Tokyo-based Canon Institute of Global Studies.
“Roughly speaking, since last year, several senior officials of the Chinese Central Military Commission have been ousted, and of the seven members, only two remain, including President Xi Jinping,” Miyake wrote, according to an English translation.
“This is an extraordinary situation on the same level as the loss or absence of the Chief of Staff of the Joint Staff and the Commander in Chief of Joint Operations in Japan, or the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff and the Commander in Chief of the Indo-Pacific Command in the United States,” he said.
In-Bum Chun, a retired South Korean lieutenant general, told Al Jazeera that the changes raise questions about the overall “internal health” of the army.
“If the dismissals are primarily anticorruption measures, they may indicate deeper institutional problems within the system. If they are primarily political, they may reflect concerns in Beijing about loyalty at senior levels,” Chun said.
“In either case, frequent leadership disruptions can create uncertainty within any military organisation. While it may strengthen central political control, it can also affect morale and internal trust among officers,” he continued.
China’s ‘growing determination’ towards Taiwan
The shake-up in PLA leadership has been closely watched in Taiwan and raised questions about China’s intentions.
China has promised to annex Taiwan, a 23-million-person democracy, by peace or by force. The United States has separately pledged to help Taiwan defend itself under the 1979 Taiwan Relations Act, although it has not committed troops.
By one often-repeated estimate from retired US Admiral Philip Davidson, the PLA will be capable of launching a military campaign against Taiwan by 2027.
William Yang, senior analyst for Northeast Asia at the Crisis Group, said China’s latest Government Work Report, released last week at the National People’s Congress in Beijing, indicates that annexing Taiwan remains a top priority.
The report shows “Beijing’s growing confidence in the overall trend of cross-strait dynamics, which it believes is trending in its favour, and also reflects its growing determination to accelerate preparation for unification, including through more coercive means, in the coming years,” he told Al Jazeera.
Hsieh Jih-sheng, deputy chief of general staff for intelligence at Taiwan’s Defense Ministry, points at a map during a news conference about China’s military drills around Taiwan, in Taipei, Taiwan, December 30, 2025 [Tsai Hsin-Han/Reuters]
Security experts told Al Jazeera the leadership shake-ups do not appear to have affected China’s military operations around Taiwan, although, they cautioned, they are still assessing the fallout.
The PLA’s Eastern Theater Command carried out the “Justice Mission 2025” military exercises around Taiwan in late December 2025, around the time that Zhang and others were under investigation or already removed, according to Alexander Huang, chairman of the Council of Strategic and Wargaming Studies in Taipei.
“This suggests that the PLA’s training and exercise system has not been significantly disrupted,” he said.
PLA “joint combat readiness patrols” have also continued into 2026, as well as “grey zone activities” intended to intimidate Taiwan or test its military resources.
Pittsburgh police officers did not intervene as Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents struggled to detain a suspect near a police station, as claims circulated that officers were told to stand down.
Pittsburgh Police Chief Jason Lando said he is not aware of any order directing officers not to act and has launched an administrative review into the incident.
“To that end, I was recently made aware of an incident that occurred in front of the Zone 3 police station where ICE agents were struggling to take someone into custody,” Lando said in a statement obtained by Fox News Digital.
KDKA Radio in Pittsburgh reported that the incident unfolded as ICE agents attempted to detain a suspect near the Zone 3 station, when the individual began fighting and kicking ICE agents.
Radio host Colin Dunlap said a Pittsburgh police officer told him they had been instructed to stand down during the confrontation.
“It has been alleged by some individuals that Pittsburgh Police officers were ordered not to intervene and were forced to stand by and watch,” he continued. “While our officers did not intervene in this particular situation, I am not aware of any order given that forbid them from doing so.”
The incident occurred near the Zone 3 station, where ICE agents had stopped a vehicle at a nearby gas station and attempted to take a suspect into custody, according to Lando.

While officers did not intervene, Lando emphasized that Pittsburgh police do not enforce federal immigration law and are not involved in ICE operations.
“Our job is not, and has never been, to conduct immigration enforcement,” Lando said. “We do not collaborate with ICE. We do not check immigration status on calls for service. We do not participate in ‘roundups.’”
He added that officers are still required to respond to emergency calls for assistance, including from other law enforcement agencies, but are instructed to assist only in securing the scene before returning to service.

Lando said he has directed the Zone 3 commander to conduct a review to determine the full circumstances surrounding the incident.
Pittsburgh Mayor Corey O’Connor has said the city will continue its policy of not assisting Immigration and Customs Enforcement operations, according to CBS News Pittsburgh.
O’Connor, a Democrat, made the comments in January in the wake of a fatal ICE-involved shooting in Minneapolis, calling the incident a “tragedy” and emphasizing that Pittsburgh aims to remain a welcoming city for immigrants.
