Fiber could help scientists detect moonquakes • The Register

Fiber-optic cables could be used to detect moonquakes, offering a simpler way to gather seismic data to support future missions.

A scientist at Los Alamos National Laboratory in New Mexico has cowritten two studies examining how fiber-optic cables on the lunar surface could be used to detect seismic activity.

Seismometers are good at collecting data but are typically deployed in a fixed location, according to the scientist, Carly Donahue. To monitor a wider area, she and others were interested in the possibility of using a rover to deliver fiber-optic cables over many kilometres on the surface of the moon without burying them. This technique is called distributed acoustic sensing (DAS).

“Fiber-optic cables are lightweight, robust, and inexpensive, so we wondered: Could they be used on the surface of the moon to detect seismic activity there?” Donahue stated.

With this in mind, the first paper “Earthquake detection in a simulated lunar regolith using distributed acoustic sensing,” looked at whether burying the cables would affect signal sensitivity.

Regolith is a layer of loose material that covers much of the lunar surface.

Unlike on Earth, where fiber-optics for sensing must be buried because even a gentle breeze can agitate the cables and create background noise, the lab tests demonstrated that burial depth did not significantly affect the clarity of the signal in the simulated regolith.

The second paper, “Controlled Source DAS Coupling Tests: Implications for Unburied Deployment on the Moon and Earth,” examined which physical attributes might make fiber-optic cables deployed on the moon’s surface work reliably. The researchers report that stiffer, thicker cables and continuous ground contact improved signal strength.

Seismic data could help scientists to form a clearer picture of our largest natural satellite, such as the composition of its core. It could also contribute to a better understanding of hazards such as particles blasted from the lunar surface when a rocket takes off or lands.

These could move at speeds of about 2 kilometers per second and cause damage to equipment or man-made structures on the moon, but Donahue says there is little current knowledge of how far those particles travel. Fiber-optic cables deployed far from a landing site could provide some data on how widely debris spreads, she claimed.

This isn’t the first such proposal to put fiber on the moon. A couple of years ago, scientists at the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institute published a paper saying that a fiber-optic network on the lunar surface could probe the moon’s interior by detecting seismic waves. They said that this would likely require “tens of kilometers” of cable at a minimum.

Meanwhile, the distributed acoustic sensing (DAS) technique could also prove useful on Earth as well. Last week, UK telecoms firm Openreach claimed that its fiber network infrastructure can be used to detect leaks in underground water supply pipes, using machine learning to detect the vibrations caused by a leak in the light beams carried by the cable. ®

Joy Behar blasts ‘negligent’ Oscars for not doing a big Robert Duvall tribute

NEWYou can now listen to Fox News articles!

“The View” co-host Joy Behar called out the Oscars on Wednesday and said it was “negligent” and disappointing that they didn’t have a big tribute for the late actor Robert Duvall.

“So why not give a big tribute to one of the great American actors who’d passed away? Who is that person?” Behar asked the show’s producer, Brian Teta, during the “Behind the Table” podcast.

As Behar waited for Teta to guess, she said, “Robert Duvall!”

Duvall passed away on Feb. 15, according to his wife, at the age of 95. Teta said there were a lot of iconic stars that passed in the last year.

“But not like him. Come on, if you’re going to do actors,” Behar began, noting that Duvall was in the show’s “In Memoriam” segment. However, Behar said he deserved more.

JANE FONDA SLAMS PARAMOUNT-WBD MERGER, WARNS CNN WILL ‘HAVE TO CAVE’ TO TRUMP

“Where was Robert De Niro, or Pacino, to come up there and talk, or Coppola, to talk about Robert Duvall? I always found that very disappointing and negligent,” she said.

Behar also seemed to disagree with Jane Fonda‘s argument that she had more to say about Robert Redford than Barbra Streisand.

Fonda took a dig at the Academy for choosing Streisand to honor Redford during the ceremony’s “In Memoriam” segment.

Following the big night, Fonda joked that she had “more to say” than Streisand due to her long history with the late actor.

“I want to know how come Streisand was up there doing that for Redford?” Fonda told Entertainment Tonight. She noted that Streisand “only made one movie with him, I made four! I have more to say.”

Behar told Teta, “I love Jane Fonda and I love Barbra Streisand, but all of Jane Fonda’s movies did not add up to the one that he did with Barbara.”

“Jane’s were good, but ‘The Way We Were’ was a spectacular film,” Behar continued.

Fans praised John Stamos this week after the actor shared his first tattoo at 62 years old.

“Guess who got his first tattoo?” the “Full House” alum wrote on a video montage showing the process of getting inked with a Native American horseback rider looking skyward.

“The Beach Boys placed this image: ‘Appeal to the Great Spirit’ over Brother Records as a symbol of artistic freedom and trust in a higher creative path,” Stamos revealed in the caption.

He continued, “Lately I’ve felt that same pull in my own life. Stepping into this new chapter of my career, taking bigger swings, following the work wherever it leads.”

The actor, who stars in the new Danny DeVito-produced horror movie, “Drag,” added, “The timing felt right, so I put that Great Spirit on my arm as a reminder to stay brave, stay open, and trust the direction the art is taking me.”

“Rockstars!!” one fan wrote, while another said, “Absolutely love this! Can’t wait to see you play with The Beach Boys Sunday!!!”

Another commenter noted “You went big! Looks good” while a fan called Stamos a “baddie.”

“I thought it was going to be a tattoo of Elvis,” one fan joked, referring to Stamos’ and his “Full House” character Uncle Jesse’s obsession with Elvis Presley.

Last summer, Stamos told Us Weekly that he’s looking to “play a little more real” in his career choices, saying, “I’m looking for my ‘Breaking Bad.’”

Stamos called his part in “Drag” “maybe one of the darkest, weirdest roles I’ve ever taken.”

He said, because of projects like “Drag” and his role as a lawyer/gynecologist on Kristen Wiig’s “Palm Royale,” he can accept his permanent link to “Full House” “because I’m not just that. I’ve proven to myself that I can do other things. Whether people see the other stuff or not, it doesn’t really matter.”

Stamos will also be in the second season of the Netflix drama “The Hunting Wives.”

“I’m in this phase of my career where I’m really looking for challenging, different roles,” Stamos told People recently.

Bitrefill blames North Korean Lazarus group for cyberattack

Bitrefill blames North Korean Lazarus group for cyberattack

Crypto-powered gift card store Bitrefill says that the attack it suffered at the beginning of the month was likely perpetrated by North Korean hackers of the Bluenoroff group.

During the investigation, the platform observed indicators similar to previous attacks attributed to the North Korean threat actor, like tactics, malware, IP and email addresses.

“Based on indicators observed during the investigation  – including the modus operandi, the malware used, on-chain tracing and reused IP + email addresses (!) – we find many similarities between this attack and past cyberattacks by the DPRK Lazarus / Bluenoroff group against other companies in the crypto industries,” reads Bitrefill’s statement.

Bitrefill is a mid-sized e-commerce platform that enables people to pay in cryptocurrency for gift cards at stores in 150 countries. The gift cards can be used to pay for anything from clothing, food and groceries, health and beauty products to bills, services, gas, transportation, and electronics.

The platform supports more than 600 mobile operators and thousands of brands worldwide.

On March 1st, Bitrefill announced technical issues affecting access to its website and app. A day later, the company disclosed that it had identified a security issue and took all services offline.

Although user balances were not affected, the gradual restoration of all services still continues to this day.

The breach was discovered after Bitrefill noticed suspicious supplier purchasing patterns, exploitation of gift card stock and supply lines, and draining of some “hot” wallets.

The investigation the firm launched to determine the cause revealed that the attack originated on a compromised employee’s laptop.

The attackers stole legacy credentials and used them to access a snapshot with production secrets, later escalating access to the larger Bitrefill infrastructure, including parts of the database and some cryptocurrency wallets.

About 18,500 purchase records containing customer email addresses, IP addresses, and cryptocurrency payment addresses were exposed in the breach. For 1,000 purchases, customer names were also exposed.

Although this information is stored in encrypted form, Bitrefill notes that the attackers may have obtained the decryption keys.

Bitrefill says this was the most serious cyberattack it has suffered in its ten years of existence, but it survived with minimal losses, which will be covered from its capital.

Ultimately, Bitrefill believes that attackers were after cryptocurrency and gift card inventory, not customer information.

BlueNoroff, also known as APT38, is a cluster of the Lazarus group that has been active since at least 2014. It typically targets financial organizations, with a more recent focus on the cryptocurrency industry, the objective being crypto theft.

Bitrefill says this was the most serious cyberattack it has suffered in the ten years of its existence, but it survived with minimal losses, which will be covered from its capital.

Meanwhile, it is expanding security reviews and pen-testing, tightening access controls, improving logging and monitoring, and refining automated shutdown mechanisms.

At this time, most of its services have returned to normal operational status, and customers aren’t required to take any action beyond treating incoming communications with extra caution.

SMU Controversy: Maybe The NCAA Learned A Lesson From B.J. Edwards Ordeal

0

NEWYou can now listen to Fox News articles!

The conversation surrounding the health of SMU guard B.J. Edwards led to plenty of outrage on Wednesday night before the Mustangs had even started their game against Miami (OH).

For two days leading up to ‘Selection Sunday’, the injury status of Edwards was a talking point as to whether SMU deserved to be in the field. On paper, sure its resume’ looked like a team that would be worthy of hopping off the bubble and into the ‘first four’.

But, with the comments from NCAA Selection Committee chair, Keith Gill, the outrage seemed to take on a life of its own following the Mustangs’ 89-79 loss to the RedHawks.

What was the deciding factor for SMU to make the field?

“One of their important players, (BJ) Edwards, lost five of six of those games,” NCAA selection committee chair Keith Gill said about SMU. “He’s coming back. He’s the third leading scorer, defensive player. And so, the quality of wins and obviously them getting back to full strength allowed them to kind of get that last spot.”

Did SMU Mislead The NCAA? B.J. Edwards Not Playing Against Miami (OH) Raises Ethics Concerns

Ok, so they trusted a school that was on the bubble to give correct information on a player’s availability with a spot in the tournament on the line.

Sorry, NCAA, that’s on you. Just making the tournament is a financial gain for the Mustangs, and maybe they actually did think Edwards would be available for the opening game against Miami (OH).

Did SMU Lie Its Way Into NCAA Tournament With Health Status Of BJ Edwards? They Might've Fooled Committee

Maybe The NCAA Learned A Lesson With SMU

The problem was that there was zero guarantee that he would play. Even with SMU putting out a statement on social media and letting committee members know that it ‘expected’ B.J. Edwards to play in the opener, you can’t trust the schools to be 100 percent truthful about a player’s health, until they are forced to.

So, when the final injury report came out two hours before the game on Wednesday night and Edwards was listed as ‘out’, it was questionable whether SMU had played the system.

Following the 89-79 loss, SMU head coach Andy Enfield was asked about the events leading up to Edwards not taking the court.

“He looked really good in practice today, last couple days, he shot the ball well,” Enfield said following the loss. “He’s moving well, but I think there’s a thing called game readiness, and he just didn’t feel like he was quite game ready. He said, ‘I could definitely play on Friday, if we win this game,’ definitely going to play on Friday, but just not quite game ready.

“Really, that was probably a day short.”

OutKick spoke with one Power-4 head coach on Thursday morning, who had this to say about the ordeal.

“I’m sure the Edwards kid had the intention of playing. But, if you’re relying on the school to give you full transparency with a spot in the tournament on the line, it’s on the NCAA for relaying the message that this was a main reason as to why they got in. What’s SMU supposed to say? They weren’t going to imply that he’d be ready by the second game, but not the first.

“If that were the case, it didn’t sound as if the NCAA would have put them in.”

Either way, hopefully the NCAA learned a lesson from this ordeal.

And next time, I’d imagine the selection committee won’t trust an availability report for a team on the bubble, or a team looking to increase its seeding in the tournament.

Jack Keane reveals NATO allies’ weakness as crisis grips Strait of Hormuz

NEWYou can now listen to Fox News articles!

As the U.S. escalates its fight against Iran with bunker-buster bombs designed to hit deeply buried missile storage sites, retired Gen. Jack Keane slammed NATO allies for their initial lack of support on “Hannity,” but said that “the Europeans have started to get the message.”

Keane said on Wednesday “these social democracy countries” have “absolutely decapitated their defense budgets” to pay for what he called “entitlement programs” over the course of decades.

Their handouts and open border policies led to serious issues, he continued, ultimately setting the conditions for strongmen like Russian President Vladimir Putin to move in.

“What did Russia look at? He [Putin] sees vulnerabilities. He sees American weak leadership. He doesn’t see the Europeans standing up here. And he takes advantage of the situation and invades Ukraine,” said Keane.

The looming threat of Putin and pressure from President Donald Trump have led America’s European allies to begin rebuilding their defenses, Keane contended, though he said it would take some time to accomplish.

He expressed frustration at allies’ initial reluctance to help escort ships through the Strait of Hormuz, a chokepoint for global oil and gas transport that supplies roughly one-fifth of the world’s crude oil and has been targeted by Iran.

Most shipping traffic has been halted since early March, after the war started. About 20 vessels have been attacked in the area.

“It’s very frustrating to see something like that happen when we need help. It’s not that we can’t escort these ships down the Straits of Hormuz. Of course, we know how to do that,” he said.

US COULD TAKE IRAN’S MAIN OIL EXPORT HUB ‘AT A TIME OF OUR CHOOSING,’ JACK KEANE SAYS

The United Kingdom, France, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands and Japan released a joint statement Thursday expressing their willingness to help secure the Strait of Hormuz, proving Keane’s prediction that some countries will “come forward and do what they should have done right from the beginning” to be true.

“We express our readiness to contribute to appropriate efforts to ensure safe passage through the Strait. We welcome the commitment of nations who are engaging in preparatory planning,” it read.

“It’s not going to start immediately,” he said. “We want to remove that threat and bring the risks down to something that’s quite manageable.”

The conflict with Iran began on February 28, 2026, with the launch of Operation Epic Fury, a joint U.S.-Israeli campaign targeting the Iranian security apparatus.

GNOME 50 debuts with X11 axed, Wayland front and center • The Register

0

GNOME 50 is here, codenamed Tokyo after the location of the GNOME Asia Summit 2025, and the biggest change is in fact more or less invisible, unless you look for an options button on the login screen.

This version is Wayland-only, and X11 support has been completely removed. Don’t panic. X11 app support is still there; there is just no longer an X11 session. You can’t log into GNOME 50 using X11 as the display server, locally or remotely, even if you manually install X.org. GNOME 50 itself still contains the XWayland X server, so you can still start and use X11 apps, the same as ever.

The GNOME 50 login screen on Fedora 44 offers only GNOME and GNOME Classic – no X11 offering here

This aside, GNOME 50 brings improved accessibility, better parental controls, and enhanced variable refresh rate and fractional scaling support. Screen-sharing now supports HDR. There are refinements to all the various applications and separate components that come with the main desktop, notably including the Files and Settings programs.

It’s not quite 25 years since the first version was released. GNOME 1.0 launched in March 1999, and GNOME 2.0 followed three years later. Since then it has kept quite close to a semiannual release schedule, and indeed, that schedule is what the Ubuntu release schedule was originally synchronized with.

The Ubuntu 26.04 roadmap says that “Resolute Raccoon,” due next month, will use GNOME 50. As this will be an LTS release, that means that the majority of Ubuntu users will be looking at GNOME 50 at least until Ubuntu 28.04 – and many for Resolute’s full five-year supported lifespan. Our impression from various Linux communities is that the majority of Ubuntu users seem not to realize that other flavors even exist – most just use the default GNOME edition.

The Reg FOSS desk always keeps an eye out for Ubuntu interim releases, and we’ve been running Ubuntu 25.10 on one of our older ThinkPads with non-upgradable Nvidia GPUs, alongside Pop!_OS 24.04. Both are Wayland-only, and we are slightly surprised to report that both work fine. The Wayland equivalent of the old X.org Nouveau generic driver for Nvidia cards picks up the ThinkPad W520’s discrete GPU, and its DisplayPort connection and attached monitor. It just works, and the desktop knows it’s a dual-GPU setup. For instance, right-click on an app icon in the Ubuntu dock, and there’s an option to run it using the discrete GPU. GNOME 49 merely sees this as NVC1 while COSMIC knows it’s an Nvidia Quadro 1000M, but either way, Wayland with recent kernels on old Nvidia kit works much better than a year or two ago.

Around the time of GNOME 46 on Ubuntu 24.04, in our testing this stuff did not work very well. For instance, a couple of years ago, Elementary OS 8‘s new Wayland session didn’t work right on this kit. Ubuntu’s Wayland support is significantly better now. In about six months, LTS upgrades will start rolling out, and a lot of people will have no choice but to give Wayland another try. Doubtless some will have problems, but it’s reasonable to expect a GNOME and Wayland stack that will work much better than in the previous LTS.

The handling of high-end display hardware has improved, too. There are more scaling options, better handling of variable refresh rates including a low-latency mouse cursor, HDR and improved color management, graphics acceleration of remote-desktop sessions, and more. It should look smoother and less stuttery than ever. This vulture suspects that through his nearly 60-year-old eyes, he wouldn’t be able to see any of this stuff – even if we had the kit to test it out, which we don’t. Youths with keen eyesight may enjoy it, though.

Of course, mandatory Wayland is not the only change. GNOME 50 also brings improved parental controls, with screen-time limits and automatic screen locking at bedtime – improvements sponsored by a grant from the Endless Foundation. The team has been working on GNOME’s accessibility support. The Orca screen-reader has received an overhaul, and there’s a new option to reduce the amount of animation effects in GNOME.

GNOME Files – formerly called Nautilus, and about the only thing left from the ambitious Eazel startup from the turn of the century – is now faster and uses less memory, alongside multiple UI improvements.

In GNOME 50 it's easier than ever to annotate PDF files in the Document Viewer

In GNOME 50 it’s easier than ever to annotate PDF files in the Document Viewer – Click to enlarge

The Document Viewer app was called Papers when it was introduced in GNOME 48, and now it has more support for annotations, including text, drawing lines, highlighting, and more.

The improvements to GNOME Calendar that we mentioned last time around continue, with better keyboard navigation, improved ICS file export, and more. Credit where it’s due: GNOME’s ability to connect to and integrate with cloud groupware accounts is one of its core strengths – it has some of the best tools for this in the FOSS space.

Several of the apps in the GNOME Circle library also have significant new versions, too. GNOME 50 includes Gtk 4.22 and various new features for developers.

GNOME 50 won’t just be the default desktop of Ubuntu “Resolute” – it will also be front-and-center in Fedora 44. The beta version of that just appeared, so for an early look at the new desktop, that’s worth a try. From prior experience, it’s more likely to work on random hardware – or a non-GNOME hypervisor – than the latest GNOME OS. ®
