Iranian missiles struck two communities in southern Israel, leaving buildings shattered and dozens injured in dual attacks not far from Israel’s main nuclear research centre.
The Iranian strikes late on Saturday came after Tehran’s main nuclear enrichment facility at Natanz was hit earlier in the day. Israel denied responsibility for the strike on Natanz, nearly 220km (135 miles) southeast of Tehran.
The Pentagon declined to comment on the strike on Natanz, which was also hit during the first week of the war and the 12-day war last June. Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs spokesperson Maria Zakharova said such strikes posed a “real risk of catastrophic disaster throughout the Middle East”.
Iran retaliated hours later.
Israel’s military said it was not able to intercept missiles that hit the southern cities of Dimona and Arad, the largest near the centre in Israel’s sparsely populated Negev desert. It was the first time Iranian missiles had penetrated Israel’s air defence systems in the area around the nuclear site.
The Israeli Ministry of Health said at least 180 people were wounded in the missile attacks on the southern city of Dimona and nearby Arad.
Dimona is about 20km (12 miles) west of the nuclear research centre, and Arad is around 35km (22 miles) to the north.
Israel is believed to be the only Middle East nation with nuclear weapons, though its leaders refuse to confirm or deny their existence. The UN nuclear watchdog said on X it had not received reports of damage to the Israeli centre or abnormal radiation levels.

On the auspicious occasion of Eid, a huge crowd of pilgrims (devotees) gathered at the Dargah of Qalandar Haji Malang Baba located in Thane district of Maharashtra. Due to the enthusiasm of the festival and deep faith in Baba, thousands of people from Mumbai, Thane and surrounding areas came together for Ziyarat.
Due to this unexpected crowd, there was so much pressure on the Funicular Trolley service leading to the Dargah located on the hill that the system completely broke down. The video of the chaos at the trolley station is now going viral on social media.

This historical Dargah of Haji Malang Baba is situated on an inaccessible hill (Malang Garh) in Kalyan at an altitude of about 790 meters above sea level. In the video going viral, it can be clearly seen that the trolley station and its waiting area are jam-packed with people and there is no space left to even step foot.
On normal days, the trolley service is a convenient means of climbing the hill for the elderly, children and women, but on the day of Eid, due to the arrival of many times more people than the capacity, there was a waiting time of hours here. The pressure of the crowd was so much that many times a situation like pushing and shoving occurred at the station.
Due to the limited capacity of the trolley and the crowd of thousands, the pilgrims had to face a lot of trouble. To get their turn, people had to stand in queues for hours in the scorching heat and humidity. When the wait became unbearable, hundreds of devotees abandoned the trolley and chose the difficult option of climbing this inaccessible and high hill on foot. Due to heavy crowd even on the footpath, people took double the time than usual to climb the route.
Controlling the pilgrims who arrived together in such a large number became a big challenge for the local administration and the Dargah management. The policemen, security forces and private guards deployed there had to work hard to handle the situation and avert any untoward incident. The security personnel tried to stop and queue the crowd through barricades.
After this viral video surfaced, people on social media are demanding better ‘crowd management’ and increasing emergency facilities at pilgrimage sites during such big festivals, so that any major accident can be avoided in future.
Right-wing PM Giorgia Meloni faces a political test in the two-day referendum on contested judicial reform.

Italians are voting in a two-day referendum on reforms that Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni says will make the judiciary more independent as critics argue it will do the opposite.
The vote on Sunday and Monday risks turning into a referendum on the right-wing leader herself before parliamentary elections next year.
Meloni’s government wants to change the Italian Constitution to separate the roles of judges and prosecutors and reform their oversight body. She says the plan is essential to guarantee impartiality and improve the functioning of Italy’s creaky justice system.
It will make it “more modern, more meritocratic, more autonomous, more accountable and, above all, free from political constraints”, Meloni said in a video this past week.
But critics condemn it as a political power grab that fails to address the real challenges, including years-long trials and prison overcrowding.
Elly Schlein, leader of the centre-left Democratic Party, said the referendum is badly drafted and “weakens the independence of the judiciary”.
Opinion polls indicated the two camps are neck and neck.
A decisive “no” would be a blow for Meloni, who has led an uncharacteristically stable coalition government since October 2022. However, she has dismissed suggestions that she might quit if she loses.
Polls close at 3pm (14:00 GMT) on Monday with preliminary results expected later that day.
The most divisive part of the reform involves changes to the Superior Council of the Judiciary (CSM), an oversight and disciplinary body whose members are elected by their peers and parliament.
The reform would divide the CSM into two councils, one for judges and one for prosecutors, and create a 15-member disciplinary court.
Members would be drawn by lots, no longer voted for by their peers, with three members of the court chosen by Italy’s ceremonial president and three from a list of experienced lawyers approved by parliament.
Criminal defence lawyer Franco Moretti, who heads the “no” campaign, said the new court risked being “the armed wing of politics”.
“When needed, it could be used to settle scores with that part of the judiciary that has dared to touch it,” he said at a debate this month.
Analysts said Meloni would likely receive a major boost from a “yes” win as she grapples with the fallout from the Iran war and a stagnant economy near the end of her mandate.
A win for the centre left – still trailing Meloni’s bloc in opinion polls – would strengthen its efforts to build an alliance capable of challenging the prime minister.
