California gubernatorial candidate and San Jose Mayor Matt Mahan warned his fellow Democrats in a new interview that the state could see a “MAGA-like” movement unless they start delivering better results.
“I’m running against the system because it doesn’t matter if you’re a Democrat, a Republican, an independent,” Mahan said on the “All-In” podcast Sunday. “We need a high-functioning government that delivers lower housing costs, lower energy costs, better schools, safer neighborhoods, an end to street homelessness. We have the resources to do it. What we haven’t had is the political will and accountability to do it. And I don’t think that’s a partisan point.”
He added, “And frankly, if the Democratic Party doesn’t start to wake up and be more responsive to the needs of our constituents and deliver with the resources we’ve got, we’re going to see the pendulum swing all the way the other way, and you’re going to see a MAGA-like movement happen here in California.”

Mahan is one of several Democratic candidates running to succeed Gov. Gavin Newsom in the gubernatorial race this November. However, Mahan has been more critical of certain state and city policies under Democratic leadership, particularly how they are beholden to special interest groups.
“When the teachers’ union organizes and says, ‘We don’t want more accountability. We don’t want to be told to use evidence-based curriculum. We don’t want more technology in the classroom,’ whatever it is they may advocate for presumably on behalf of or at least what they perceive to be the interests of their members,” Mahan said.
He continued, “It’s our elected officials who need to step up and say, ‘Well, for the good of the community, we’re going to push you on that. We’re not just going to give you a pass. We’re not just going to veto that legislation or stay quiet when we know that for what we’re spending, we aren’t getting what we should be.'”

He stopped short of criticizing Newsom directly, saying that he tries to “attack problems, not people” and called the governor a “bulwark” against some of the worst legislative ideas.

“I’m not really interested in, you know, evaluating somebody’s intentions or their ideology so much as the results of their actions. And I think he’s done some really good things. I also think he could do even more,” Mahan said.
Newsom’s office declined to comment to Fox News Digital.
Mahan also grabbed attention last year after proposing a policy to involuntarily jail homeless people who frequently refuse housing services.

“Homelessness can’t be a choice, especially when over 200 people die on our streets each year,” Mahan said in a 2025 press conference. “I’m proposing that after three offers of shelter, we hold people accountable for turning their lives around, because we all have a responsibility to end this crisis.”

On Wednesday (25 March) in Bangladesh, a bus full of passengers overturned in a river. At least 40 people were traveling in the bus. The incident occurred when the bus was boarding a ferry ship. According to officials, many passengers are missing, rescue operations are going on amidst rain and strong winds.
Two died in the accident
According to the report of Dhaka Tribune, two people died in this tragic accident while at least 35 others are missing. Officials said the accident occurred at Dauldiya Terminal in south-western Rajbari when the bus fell into the Padma river at around 5.15 pm. Divers have so far recovered the bodies of two women from the bus and efforts are on to rescue the remaining bodies.

Rescue operation being conducted to save people
The terminal supervisor said, ‘When the bus was going from the pontoon to the ferry, a small ferry collided with the pontoon. The bus fell into the river when the bus driver lost control of the steering. Dauladiya river police post in-charge said that some passengers managed to swim to the shore or were rescued, but most of the people are missing and an operation is being conducted to rescue the people. He did not give any number of missing people.
Help is being taken from divers
Ferry terminal officials said that the depth of the river at the place where the bus fell is about 30 feet. Divers of the fire department immediately started the rescue operation and after a few hours a rescue ship also reached the spot, however the bus completely sank. Rajbari Dewan fire officer Sohail Rana said divers were also called from two other terminals on the other side of the river, while rescue teams from Dhaka were also sent to the spot.

A Florida man was shot and killed in the Bahamas after an altercation with an off-duty police officer, as officials say a criminal investigation is underway.
The Tallahassee Democrat reported that the victim, identified as 31-year-old Cody Castillo, of Crawfordville, Florida, was killed March 21 in Nassau following a dispute outside Da Plantation Bar & Grill in Nassau. The outlet said the shooting involved an off-duty senior officer of the Royal Bahamas Police Force.
National Security Minister Wayne Munroe said a criminal investigation has been opened.
“My understanding is that the police responded to the scene, acquired CCTV footage, as they always do, and commenced an investigation,” Munroe said. “If there’s evidence that criminal charges should be levied, they will do it. If, at the conclusion, they determine that they are uncomfortable in levying criminal charges, it goes to a coroner’s inquest.”

A U.S. State Department spokesperson confirmed the death of an American, saying that they are “closely tracing local authorities’ investigation into the cause of death.”
“The Trump Administration has no higher priority than the safety and security of American citizens,” the spokesperson told Fox News Digital. “Out of respect for the privacy of the family and loved ones during this difficult time, we have no further comment.”
Authorities have not released further official details about the identities of those involved or the circumstances of the shooting. Fox News Digital has reached out to the Royal Bahamas Police Force and the U.S. Embassy in Nassau for additional information.

After participating in months-long regional qualification rounds and spending years to realise their biggest dream, six teams will have one last shot at making it to the FIFA World Cup 2026 when they face off in the interconfederation playoffs this week.
The FIFA Playoff Tournament will see two teams seal their place in the tournament cohosted by Canada, Mexico and the United States in June and July.
At the same time, separate playoffs are being held by UEFA for the final four European qualifiers.
This year’s World Cup will be the biggest ever with 48 nations playing in three countries over five weeks, but with six spots still up for grabs, there’s still one last challenge for some aspirants.
The four lowest-ranked nations – Bolivia, New Caledonia, Jamaica and Suriname – will play in two semifinals with the winners advancing to a final against one of the two highest-ranked teams, the DRC and Iraq.
The teams winning those two games will advance to the World Cup.
Pathway 1: New Caledonia vs Jamaica on Thursday at 22:00 GMT. The winner plays the DRC.
Pathway 2: Bolivia vs Suriname on Friday at 03:00 GMT. The winner plays Iraq.
Final 1: DRC vs TBD on Tuesday at 21:00 GMT.
Final 2: Iraq vs TBD on Wednesday at 03:00 GMT.
Mexico will host the games in Guadalajara and Monterrey, which will also serve as FIFA World Cup host cities.
Unsurprisingly, the two predetermined finalists – Iraq and the DRC – will be the favourites to enter the World Cup based on their FIFA rankings and team strength.
Despite the United States-Israeli war on Iran hampering their preparations, the 2007 Arab Cup champions are bidding to reach the World Cup for only the second time, having qualified for the 1986 finals in Mexico.
Meanwhile, the DRC are among the top 50 teams in the world and ninth in Africa. Their last appearance at the World Cup came in 1974 when they played under their former name Zaire and were eliminated in the group stage.
The DRC will hope to replicate their success in the regional qualifying rounds against opponents such as Nigeria and Cameroon and end the wait for a World Cup appearance.
The tournament will open on June 11 at 3pm (21:00 GMT) at Mexico City Stadium when Mexico will take on South Africa.
MetLife Stadium, which will be called the New York New Jersey Stadium during the tournament, will host the final on July 19 at 3pm (20:00 GMT).

Former Secretary of State Antony Blinken acknowledged that the Biden administration’s political calculus, including the 2022 midterm elections, complicated its push for a tougher nuclear agreement with Iran, lamenting that “sometimes politics gets in the way.”
Blinken admitted Biden gave into the pull of midterm politics.
“You have midterm elections: It shouldn’t be, but it is too often a factor,” Blinken told The New York Times’ David Sanger at a Harvard forum Tuesday.
As President Donald Trump and Israel have pounded Iran’s nuclear and ballistic missile aspirations, including decapitation strikes on multiple iterations of leadership, Blinken now “regrets” his administration never secured what officials had described as a “longer and stronger” follow-on deal to the original Iran nuclear agreement.

“I wish we had gotten there,” Blinken said. “We worked very hard on getting that longer and stronger agreement. And I think at various points, we were really leaning into it.
“The Iranians were leaning back at other points. They were leaning in, and we had our own constraints. You know, I’ll acknowledge, too, that sometimes politics gets in the way.
When pressed on whether that meant President Biden did not want to move forward before the elections, Blinken said the administration was trying to find the “right time” to complete an agreement. But he added that, even accounting for the political considerations, Iran “wasn’t conceding enough to make that deal worthwhile.”
“So what did we do?” Blinken said. “We actually kept the pressure on them.”

That admission is likely to fuel criticism from Republicans who argued the Biden administration’s Iran strategy was shaped as much by domestic political concerns as by national security calculations.
Trump says his administration, led by peace envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner, is now pursuing new diplomatic off ramps for peace with Iran, but he added is he achieving his long-stated goal that “Iran will never have a nuclear weapon.”
“They can’t have certain things,” Trump said Monday from the Oval Office. “It starts with no nuclear weapons, and they’ve agreed to that.
“They’re not going to have enrichment — any of those things,” he added.

“We are in about the best bargaining position,” Trump said. “We’re way ahead of schedule.”
Donald Trump has named the first members of his President’s Council of Advisors on Science and Technology (PCAST), largely comprising Trump allies in the tech industry and one actual scientist.
PCAST is an advisory council reporting directly to the president, and has existed in its current form since President Bush in 1990. It has been re-chartered by each incoming administration since.
The latest PCAST was established by an executive order in January 2025, with two co-chairs: Assistant to the President for Science and Technology (APST) Michael Kratsios, and Special Advisor for AI and Crypto David Sacks. Trump is only now filling the rest of the board out, and has named 13 members so far, instead of the 24 it typically comprises.
Many of these lucky 13 are tech industry executives who were quick to demonstrate their allegiance to the president following his inauguration last year, such as Meta’s Mark Zuckerberg and Oracle co-founder and CTO Larry Ellison, who has had a longtime friendship with Trump.
Other familiar tech industry names include Michael Dell, Nvidia’s rockstar CEO and AI proponent Jensen Huang, Google co-founder Sergey Brin, and pontificating venture capitalist Marc Andreessen, who co-founded browser pioneer Netscape.
Two of the PCAST ensemble are women: Oracle executive vice chair Safra Catz and AMD president and CEO Lisa Su.
Other more unusual choices include Fred Ehrsam, co-founder of cryptocurrency exchange Coinbase, and South African-American tech billionaire investor David Friedberg, who is a cohost of the popular bro-tech podcast All In alongside Sacks. Bob Mumgaard is co-founder and CEO of Commonwealth Fusion Systems, a firm aiming to develop nuclear fusion, while Jacob DeWitte is co-founder and CEO of nuclear microreactor startup Oklo.
Just one PCAST member is an academic: John Martinis, professor of physics at the University of California, Santa Barbara, who led a team to develop a quantum computer at Google’s Quantum AI Lab.
This is in contrast to previous incarnations of the advisory panel, which tended to be full of academic experts in various fields of science and technology.
According to Trump’s executive order, the current PCAST will terminate two years from the date the order was issued, which means it has just ten months left, unless extended by the president.
Perhaps more worrying is Trump’s assertion in his executive order that the pursuit of truth in science is increasingly under threat.
“Today, across science, medicine, and technology, ideological dogmas have surfaced that elevate group identity above individual achievement, enforce conformity at the expense of innovative ideas, and inject politics into the heart of the scientific method,” it says. We wonder if President Trump has ever heard of projection. ®
