Kenny Smith nixes UNC job talk, calls for long-term commitment from next coach

North Carolina’s men’s basketball program parted ways with head coach Hubert Davis earlier this week after an upset loss to VCU in the opening round of the NCAA tournament.

UNC did not disclose details about Davis’ departure, instead describing the move as a change in leadership.

The former Tar Heels coach later confirmed on social media he was “let go” despite wanting to continue coaching at Chapel Hill.

Since Davis’ exit, several possible candidates with ties to UNC have emerged, including Kenny “The Jet” Smith, who was notably mentioned by ESPN’s Stephen A. Smith.

After praising Hubert Davis, who both played and later coached at North Carolina, Kenny Smith shut down any interest in the vacant job, calling speculation linking him to the opening “disrespectful.”

“Yeah, we can talk about North Carolina,” Smith, a basketball analyst, said during halftime of the Texas-Purdue Sweet 16 game in the NCAA tournament.

“But that vacancy — I thought that was honestly disrespectful. But first of all, Coach Hubert Davis, thank you. Your service and what you did for North Carolina basketball as a player and as a coach, you moved it forward. I think people forget that because of one game here and there.”

Smith emphasized the importance of preserving North Carolina’s coaching lineage.

“But I also think this is a precarious position for North Carolina and for us as Tar Heels. Because what makes us special, when you fire one person, that’s Hubert Davis. But when you have Coach [Brad] Frederick, you have Sean May, you have Jeff Lebo, you have Marcus Paige, you have Pat Sullivan.

“What that is, is you have a lineage to every era of basketball that’s Carolina that was on that staff, including Hubert Davis. Every era was connected.

“That’s what makes us special. Forget all that ‘blue blood.’ What makes Carolina family is the connection of all of those eras were in one building at one time. That’s what makes people pay attention and have some animosity or some love for us.”

It remains unclear how wide UNC will cast its net, but hiring outside the program would break from a tradition tied closely to Dean Smith. Nevertheless, Smith hopes the next coach will be committed to Chapel Hill for the long haul, much like Davis was.

“I will say this. Dean Smith retired as a Tar Heel. Roy Williams retired as a Tar Heel. Hubert Davis was going to retire a Tar Heel. Whoever we come in, they have to want to retire a Tar Heel,” Smith said.

“I don’t care what that means. You don’t want to look for, ‘Oh, [what] JJ Redick has done in LA. I want to be a Laker.’ You retire a Tar Heel, the next person.”

Andrew Garfield says watching ‘Harry Potter’ has become ‘controversial’

NEWYou can now listen to Fox News articles!

Actor Andrew Garfield is the latest celebrity to speak out against writer J.K. Rowling, arguing that watching the “Harry Potter” films is now “controversial.”

Rowling has faced consistent criticism for her views on biological sex, frequently calling for the exclusion of transgender women from girls’ and women’s sports.

During a radio interview, the actor best known for playing “Spider-Man” did not mention Rowling by name, instead referring to her as “she that shall remain nameless” and accusing her of supporting “inhumane” causes.

Garfield said in a Hits Radio interview, reported by Deadline, that he watched the films for the first time recently but is aware it is problematic to support them.

“I know it’s like controversial. And like, we shouldn’t be, you know, putting money in the pocket of inhumane legislation right now through she that shall remain nameless,” Garfield said, referencing Voldemort, the “Harry Potter” villain known as “He-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named.”

“But the soul and the spirit of a lot of the essence of the themes of those films, and the kids are so good,” he added.

Rowling has donated to campaign group For Women Scotland, which legally challenged how the word “woman” is defined by law in the United Kingdom. In 2025, the UK Supreme Court ruled that the legal definition of a woman is based on biological sex.

The author also recently praised the International Olympic Committee’s decision to ban transgender women from competing in women’s sports, writing on X:

“Today’s ruling by the IOC means a welcome return to fair sport for women and girls, but I’ll never forget the scandal of Paris 2024, when people who consider themselves supremely virtuous and progressive publicly cheered on men punching women.”

Garfield isn’t the first celebrity to publicly speak out against Rowling. Daniel Radcliffe, who played Harry Potter in the original films, and his co-star Emma Watson, who played Hermione Granger, have both condemned Rowling’s opinions.

Actor John Lithgow considered walking away from his role as Dumbledore in the HBO adaptation of the “Harry Potter” books amid backlash to Rowling’s comments, according to The New York Times. He ultimately remained in the role and appeared in a new trailer released this week.

Florida Keys captain lands 480-pound swordfish with Pennsylvania family

A Florida fisherman changed his luck recently in a big way.

Captain Jose Rodriguez Jr. of Cudjoe Key, Florida, takes clients out four to five times a week on a Florida Keys fishing charter to reel in trophy fish. But he’d never come close to catching a monster 500-pound swordfish.

On Feb. 18, Rodriguez, along with a Pennsylvania family, landed a giant 480-pound swordfish, one of the largest of its kind caught in the Keys in recent years.

“It was definitely a fight and a struggle,” Rodriguez, who helps run the family business, Above & Below Fishing Adventures, told Fox News Digital in an interview.

“We fought the fish for five hours, and it took us at least another half hour to control the fish on the side of the boat before we could pull it over the side,” he said.

The Florida Keys are known for drawing in large species like swordfish, but landing one of this size requires specialized deep-sea techniques and is considered quite rare.

“Everyone’s in search of a nickel, which is 500 pounds, but it rarely happens in the Keys,” said Rodriguez, 25.

When he started the fishing trip, it seemed like a “normal” day, he said. A Pennsylvania couple had chartered the boat to celebrate their son’s high school graduation.

As Rodriguez first spotted the swordfish, he knew it was large, but he wasn’t sure how massive it would be.

“Not everyone’s prepared to catch a 500-pound fish.”

“Then my mate and I got a really good eye on it, and we basically sealed the deal,” he said.

At first, the Pennsylvania family didn’t realize the importance of what was happening, he said. But the two children aboard were big supporters.

Once the swordfish was caught, there was plenty of work to be done. For starters, there was no simple way to store a fish that huge.

“A fish that big actually lies on the back deck with ice bags on top of it with towels,” Rodriguez said. “There’s really no other spot” for it.

Then he and his mate sprayed it with saltwater to bring the core temperature down.

In terms of Rodriguez’s catch, there were about 50–70 people in his community who came to admire the fish.

“We had well over 200 pounds of meat to use,” he said.

“The whole community was eating swordfish that day,” Rodriguez said, chuckling.

When asked if he felt like a local celebrity, he said, “Almost, yeah. Everybody knows about it. … It’s just about being in the right place at the right time, and it ended up happening to me.”

Chicago area newspaper launches ICE tracker days after Sheridan Gorman murder

NEWYou can now listen to Fox News articles!

A Chicago-area college newspaper announced it has launched an “ICE tracker” just days after an illegal immigrant was charged with the murder of 18-year-old Loyola University student Sheridan Gorman.

The Dominican Star, the paper of Dominican University located just west of Chicago, revealed Wednesday it is taking a page from The Loyola Phoenix, the paper of Gorman’s university that unveiled its own ICE tracker last fall.

“We became inspired by their initiative and decided to create our own addition to service the Dominican University community,” the Dominican Star wrote. “After having a meeting with [Loyola Phoenix editor-in-chief, Lilli Malone and managing editor Julia Pentasuglio], we gathered more information to make this launch possible.”

“These developments have led to us creating our own map with pinned locations where there has been confirmed ICE activity. The ICE Tracker will include areas that are around Dominican and that have a large commuter student population,” the paper continued.

The paper listed several surrounding neighborhoods the paper intends to monitor and asks its readers to submit reports of ICE activity to its staff, which will update a map with pins.

The Dominican Star did not immediately respond to Fox News Digital‘s requests for comment.

The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) confirmed on Sunday that the suspect in Gorman’s murder is Jose Medina-Medina, a “Venezuelan criminal illegal alien” who was apprehended by the U.S. Border Patrol and released into the country under the Biden administration in 2023. Medina-Medina was released again one month later after being arrested for shoplifting.

The Loyola Phoenix itself went viral with its mea culpa after walking back a social media headline that called Medina-Medina an “illegal immigrant.”

“On March 23, a post on The Phoenix’s Instagram page carried the following headline: ‘Immigrant Man Charged in Murder of Sheridan Gorman, DHS Involved,’” the editor’s note read at the bottom of a report about Gorman’s murder.

“That headline didn’t reflect the most important elements in the story, and it was taken down minutes later to prevent any further harm to affected community members,” the editor’s note continued.
