Providence mural honoring Iryna Zarutska removed after local outrage

A mural painted to honor Iryna Zarutska — the Ukrainian refugee who was murdered while riding a North Carolina train — is being taken down after outrage in Providence, Rhode Island.

On Tuesday, a construction crew was seen near the exterior of The Dark Lady, an LGBTQ+ club in downtown Providence, working to remove the partly finished mural. The mural, which was painted on canvas, was lowered to the ground, folded up and taken away, WJAR-TV reported.

Artist Ian Gaudreau confirmed the news that the artwork was going to be removed after local outrage.

“A lot of people voiced their frustrations, and voices were heard, and the work is coming down as a reaction to that,” Gaudreau told WJAR-TV Monday.

The mural’s removal came as residents and elected officials complained about the artwork. The office of Mayor Brett Smiley told Fox News that he wanted the artwork taken down, saying that the art is “divisive and does not represent Providence.”

“The murder of the individual depicted in this mural was a devastating tragedy, but the misguided, isolating intent of those funding murals like the one across the county is divisive and does not represent Providence,” Smiley said in a statement.

He said he continued to “encourage our community to support local artists whose work brings us closer together rather than divide us.”

Chairman of the Narragansett Republican Party Anthony D’Ellena created a petition in an effort to keep the mural of Zarutska in Providence.

“This is exactly what Democrats do — they try to erase the memory of their victims and they don’t fix their soft-on-crime policies,” D’Ellena told WPRI-TV. “They erase the evidence, so no one sees the deadly price of their policies.”

Zarutska, a 23-year-old refugee who fled her country after the Russian invasion, was stabbed to death in an unprovoked attack while riding the Lynx Blue Line light rail in Charlotte, N.C., last year.

The suspect, Decarlos Brown Jr., 34, is charged with violence against a railroad carrier and mass transportation system resulting in death, which is a capital offense under federal law.

Records from the North Carolina Department of Adult Correction show Brown has a prior criminal history, including convictions for larceny, breaking and entering and armed robbery.

“Iryna was riding home on the train when a deranged monster, who had been arrested over a dozen times and was released through no-cash bail, stood up and viciously slashed a knife through her neck and body,” President Trump said.

Google launches line of Android laptops festooned with Gemini AI

Personal Tech

Googlebook promo imagery from a Google video on the product launch

Google is rolling out a new line of laptops based on Android instead of ChromeOS, and using the opportunity to try and move upmarket from the budget-conscious Chromebooks – while also baking AI into every fissure of the system.

The new line of so-called Googlebooks seems even more obtrusive about pushing embedded AI than Windows 11 embedding Copilot into everything. With the OS on Googlebooks, which the company touts as the best of Chrome OS and Android, even moving the cursor over an on-screen task such as the text of an email nags you to offload work to Gemini.

Google was has been publicly planning to merge Android and ChromeOS for a while, with Android boss Sameer Sama saying last year that the Android codebase would be the core of the new platform.  This gives the company a chance to break into the premium laptop market, using one of its core assets, the Android ecosystem, to differentiate from the kid-friendly and budget-oriented Chromebook lineup.

While the laptops won’t be coming until later this year, we can already see from the press materials and video demo that this new kind of notebook is meant to out-Copilot Microsoft. One of the main features demoed, Magic Pointer, activates when you wiggle the cursor and shows you contextual suggestions based on what you hover over. For example, in the video, Alexander Kuscher, Senior Director of Laptops and Tablets at Google, showed how hovering over the date in an email brought up options to view his schedule, craft a reply saying “I’m in town on May 19,” or even use Google maps to suggest meetup spots. Having AI crammed into Windows Notepad seems quaint by comparison.

Kuscher also showed how dragging images on a Googlebook can combine them. He dragged a photo of a nursery onto an image of a swath of wallpaper and a picture of a crib and the system generated a picture of the nursery with the crib and the wallpaper included. The Google exec pointed out that an act like combining photos normally involves logging into a chatbot, uploading the photos, and giving it a prompt. Here it was just drag and drop. No word on whether the system can use your photos as training data.

Android apps will also work on Googlebooks, and users will also be able to launch them from the phones, much like Apple’s iPhone Mirroring. In the demo, Kuscher showed Duolingo running in a portrait-shaped window on the desktop operating system as if it were on his phone.

Google said that Googlebooks are being “built with premium craftsmanship and materials” by partners like Acer, ASUS, Dell, HP, and Lenovo. They also sport a Google-colored glowbar on the cover so everyone knows who owns your digital soul.

Considering the RAM shortage and the fact that IDC expects PC shipments to decline by 11.3 percent in 2026, Google has picked a challenging time to come out with a whole new category of laptop. While the company has not released pricing, we can only imagine that Googlebooks will be significantly more expensive than Chromebooks, which are currently in the $200 to $500 range in the US.

These new notebooks are likely to compete with premium consumer Windows and macOS laptops at a time when demand is declining and people are holding onto old devices longer. We see no evidence that Google is even targeting businesses and we doubt IT departments would be interested in the features the company has focused on.

Google also announced the expansion of Gemini Intelligence onto high-end Android devices (i.e., Samsung Galaxy and Google Pixel devices) as part of Tuesday’s I/O preview, noting that it’s designed “to help your phone handle boring tasks for you.” Google provides examples like filling out online forms, summarizing websites, and even rewriting voice-to-text messages to get rid of pauses and other natural speech patterns that detract from the written word.

Speaking of Chromebooks, we asked Google what will become of its budget hardware line with the release of the Googlebook, but we didn’t hear back. We imagine that they will probably continue to serve the educational market for some time.

Google made several other announcements during Tuesday’s presentation, including a new Pause Point feature in the upcoming Android 17 that follows in Apple’s steps by protecting you from your own worst instincts to scroll endlessly or waste half your day playing chess on your phone. It allows you to mark certain apps as “distracting” so that when you launch them, the phone asks you to take a deep breath and reconsider your actions, which is something Apple’s mindfulness app doesn’t do.

To the bane of everyone tired of social media reaction videos, Google is also baking the format right into Android with Screen Reactions that will allow users to capture video of their device screen along with sticking themselves in the lower corner so they can regale everyone with their opinion about whatever they’re talking over. ®

Labour must fulfil promise to introduce clean air act, charities urge | Air pollution

0

Ministers should bring forward a new clean air act that would ban wood burning, clear diesel vehicles from the roads and force councils to cut pollution, a group of more than 60 charities have urged before the king’s speech on Wednesday.

Labour held out the prospect of a clean air act while in opposition in 2023, but this was dropped from the final election manifesto, and the government has made no move to reinstate it.

Jemima Hartshorn, founder and director of the Mums for Lungs charity, one of the groups behind the letter, said: “Dirty air is the biggest environmental health risk in this country. Air pollution is costing us about £27bn a year and is linked to asthma, wheezing, cancer and dementia. The dirty air is harming us all, and it’s damaging the economy too. Yet, we know how to solve this problem.”

The call, by organisations with more than 230,000 members, came as one of the country’s leading experts on pollution and health urged ministers to ban wood burning in urban areas. Stephen Holgate, who is the special adviser to the Royal College of Physicians on air quality, told the British Medical Journal (BMJ) it was a “disgrace” that so few complaints about wood burning resulted in any enforcement action. In the year from August 2024 to August 2025, at least 15,195 complaints were made against wood burning in England, but only 24 fines were issued.

Current air regulations date back to the days when coal was the main culprit behind dirty air. “We know now that these particles [from wood burning] are at least as toxic, if not more toxic, than those coming out of coal,” said Holgate. “So, we have regulation now to stop this, but these regulations are never acted on. Yet we’ve had thousands of complaints about this issue.”

Hartshorn also called for the phaseout of wood-burning stoves, and help for people in rural areas who rely on them to move to cleaner and low-carbon heating systems, such as heat pumps.

“Unnecessary wood burning is increasing in this country,” she said, pointing to rocketing sales of wood burners to people in urban areas in recent years.

The BMJ also revealed that the Scottish government had been lobbied by the Stove Industry Association (SIA), which represents manufacturers of wood burners, before it abandoned plans to ban wood burners from new homes. The UK government was also lobbied, with eight meetings between the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs and SIA representatives between October 2021 and June 2024, when the Tories were in power. Conservative ministers or Defra officials met clean air campaigners only twice over the same period.

Since Labour took office, three meetings have been held between Defra and the SIA, and 14 with clean air campaigners. The government undertook a consultation on wood burning earlier this year, but campaigners said it was toothless, as it in effect ruled out any form of ban in favour of a potential health warning on stoves.

The Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government (MHCLG) refused to provide details of any meetings with the stove industry, as requested by the BMJ under the Freedom of Information Act. Last month, MHCLG issued new guidance to housebuilders – called the Future Homes Standard – that would allow wood-burning stoves to be installed in new housing, despite having indicated that the rules would require low-carbon heat pumps to be installed.

Hartshorn said: “I am shocked by the lobbying and devastated on behalf of all the children, hundreds of thousands of them, who are attending hospitals, struggling to breathe and scared – because our air is making them sick.”

She added: “This government committed to raising the healthiest generation of children ever. Well, this is the test: will they cut ties with the SIA and other industry lobbying bodies and finally do right by our children and public health? [They must] end the sale of new wood stoves and phase out all non-essential wood burning.”

A spokesperson for the SIA said: “Our engagement with both the Scottish and UK governments has been conducted openly and in line with standard democratic processes followed by all sectors.

“We fully recognise the importance of protecting air quality and public health, and we support proportionate, evidence-based measures that deliver meaningful emission reductions,” the spokesperson said. “Our position consistently supports the transition to modern, Ecodesign compliant stoves, alongside the promotion of best practice in fuel use and stove operation.” The spokesperson added that a ban on wood burning would “negatively impact the UK’s manufacturing and rural economies”.

However Ecodesign stoves, though an improvement on older models, have been found to still emit air pollutants.

A government spokesperson said: “Our new rules will reduce harms from domestic burning and we will continue to monitor pollution from this source to inform any future action.”

A Scottish government spokesperson said: “As we have said previously, in amending these regulations the Scottish government listened to concerns from rural and island communities about resilience in times of bad weather or power outages, as well as the wider use of bioenergy and peat for other reasons. These changes addressed these concerns whilst retaining the spirit of the original legislation, which aims to eradicate polluting gas and oil boilers from new homes and buildings.”

Foxconn confirms cyberattack after Nitrogen claims Apple, Nvidia data theft

cyber-crime

Affected factories back up and running, we’re told

Foxconn, a critical supplier for major hardware companies like Apple and Nvidia, on Tuesday confirmed a cyberattack affecting its North American operations after the Nitrogen ransomware gang listed the electronics manufacturer on its data leak site.

“Some of Foxconn’s factories in North America suffered a cyberattack,” a Foxconn spokesperson told The Register. “The cybersecurity team immediately activated the response mechanism and implemented multiple operational measures to ensure the continuity of production and delivery. The affected factories are currently resuming normal production.”

Nitrogen ransomware criminals on Monday claimed to have breached the Taiwan-based company and stolen 8 TB of data comprising more than 11 million files. The miscreants say the leaks include confidential instructions, internal project documentation, and technical drawings related to projects at Intel, Apple, Google, Dell, and Nvidia, among others.

Foxconn declined to confirm that these – or any – customers’ information was hoovered up in the digital intrusion.

Nitrogen, which has been around since 2023, is believed to be one of the various ransomware offshoots that borrowed code from the leaked Conti 2 builder.

And, in what may be very bad news for its latest victim, even paying the ransom demand may not guarantee recovery of encrypted files.

In February, Coveware researchers warned that a programming error prevents the gang’s decryptor from recovering victims’ files, so paying up is futile. The finding specifically concerns the group’s malware that targets VMware ESXi.

This isn’t the first time Foxconn has been targeted by ransomware gangs. In 2024, LockBit claimed to have infected Foxsemicon Integrated Technology, a semiconductor equipment manufacturer within the Foxconn Technology Group. The same criminal crew also hit a Foxconn subsidiary in Mexico in 2022. ®

Lebanese Christians say they blocked Hezbollah to save their town

NEWYou can now listen to Fox News articles!

The church bells still ring in Rmeish on the Lebanon-Israel border.

While much of southern Lebanon has suffered destruction during the war between Israel and the terror group Hezbollah, the predominantly Christian border town close to Israel remained largely untouched. Churches are still standing. Homes remain intact. Residents say the village avoided Israeli strikes because locals refused to allow Hezbollah fighters to operate from inside the town.

“There was more than one attempt for them to come to the outskirts or the entrance of the village to launch rockets from there,” one resident told Jusoor News. “The young men of Rmeish confronted them and prevented them from entering.”

“That led to the protection of Rmeish from any Israeli attacks,” the resident said. “The Israelis do not target aimlessly. They target launch sites.”

The account offers a rare public glimpse into open resistance to Hezbollah inside southern Lebanon, where criticism of the Iranian-backed terrorist group is often met with accusations of treason or collaboration with Israel.

Tarek, a Christian social activist from Rmeish who spoke by phone with Fox News Digital, said residents of the town have long-faced pressure because they refused to align with Hezbollah.

“After 2000, when Israel left, we were always labeled as collaborators of Israel,” Tarek said. “We suffered a lot from this stigma.”

He said Hezbollah supporters accused the town of cooperating with Israel simply because it escaped the destruction seen in neighboring villages.

The interviews come as the Trump administration brokers talks between Israel and Lebanon aimed at stabilizing the border and addressing Hezbollah’s military presence in southern Lebanon. Hezbollah Secretary-General Naim Qassem recently rejected any discussion about disarming the group, while U.S. officials continue pushing to strengthen the Lebanese state over the armed terror group.

Tarek argued Hezbollah’s grip on Lebanon cannot be separated from Iran.

“The Lebanese government has been ruled by Hezbollah for almost 36 years,” he told Fox News Digital. “They are deeply entrenched in all arms of the government, security, army and institutions.”

“If the president or prime minister says they want peace, Hezbollah will resist that,” he added.

Tarek said weakening Iran is the key to weakening Hezbollah.

“It’s about cutting the head of the octopus, which is the Iranian regime,” he said. “Once you cut the head, Hezbollah will no longer function.”

Another resident said many in the town increasingly believe “Hezbollah’s project is an Iranian project, not a Lebanese one.”

Another woman from the village described living surrounded by war while trying to keep the town outside the fighting.

“We are in the middle, and the war surrounds us from all sides,” she said. “This makes us live in a state of fear, anxiety, insecurity and instability.”

A man from the village said residents had endured decades of wars that they have nothing to do with.

“We decided to remain steadfast,” he said. “Where would we go?”

An older resident said his family has suffered from violence along the border since the 1970s.

“We are tired of wars,” he said. “We want nothing but peace.”

Despite accusations from Hezbollah supporters, residents insisted they do not regret standing up to the terrorist group.

“All accusations of treason are rejected,” one resident said. “The people of Rmeish want to live safely on their land.”

Another resident added: “Just because I don’t believe in your project doesn’t mean I’m a traitor.”

Ahed Al Hendi, a senior fellow at the Center for Peace Communications, told Fox News Digital that, “The defiance shown by Christians in southern Lebanon reflects a major shift in the country’s internal dynamics. For more than two decades, many Christians living near the border suffered under Hezbollah’s dominance, yet were stigmatized and often afraid to speak openly against it.”

“Today,” Al Hendi added, “with the changing balance of power, they are increasingly confronting Hezbollah publicly and speaking out against what they see as its tyranny.”

Xavier Becerra lectures KTLA reporter on doing ‘profile,’ not ‘gotcha’ interview

NEWYou can now listen to Fox News articles!

Democratic California gubernatorial candidate Xavier Becerra is taking heat from critics over a contentious exchange he had with a local reporter about whether he was subjecting himself to a “gotcha piece.”

Becerra, who is now widely considered a leading Democratic candidate in California’s jungle primary following the exit of disgraced former Rep. Eric Swalwell, sat down with KTLA’s Annie Rose Ramos as part of the station’s interview series on the top hopefuls in the race.

However, in the interview that aired Tuesday, Becerra appeared to try setting the terms with the reporter.

“By the way, this is a profile piece. This is not a gotcha piece, right?” Becerra began.

“Look, I think these questions are fair. It’s in order to learn about you as a candidate,” Ramos responded.

“So long as it’s about the profile,” Becerra doubled down.

“I don’t know how you define profile, but I’d like to begin the interview,” Ramos replied.

“The way I describe profile is you talk about all the things I’ve done, things I want to do — along with some tough questions, but not only tough questions,” Becerra said.

EX-BIDEN DOJ SPOKESPERSON STUNS PANEL BY SAYING SHE DOESN’T TRUST LEADING DEM CANDIDATE TO BE CALIFORNIA GOVERNOR

Becerra did, in fact, face tough questions — including how he’d address homelessness and his record as the Biden-era Health and Human Services (HHS) secretary, specifically claims his agency lost track of over 85,000 migrant children who entered the country illegally.

Ramos later told her KTLA colleagues she was “caught off guard” by Becerra’s comments, saying her experience was “dramatically different” from the other candidates she sat down with.

“To have it start this way before I had even asked a question… it’s about asking some of the hard questions sometimes but allowing our viewers to get to know each candidate,” Ramos said. “So that is why not just myself but our editors and executive producers here at KTLA decided to include that portion in this piece.”

Becerra’s conduct was widely panned on social media.

“A man telling a younger woman how to do her job, this just posted on KTLA Los Angeles. Dude it’s 2026,” Democratic strategist Michael Trujillo reacted.

“Politicians and candidates…let your staff have these whiny conversations! Or at least don’t do it on camera!” Pod Save America podcast co-host Tommy Vietor exclaimed.

“This is not surprising to anyone who has ever covered Becerra. He once held up his fingers in the sign of the cross to ward me off, as though I were a vampire, after a piece accurately describing his effort to undermine Pelosi with the Prog Caucus over ACA public option,” NBC News correspondent Jonathan Allen wrote, referring to a 2010 incident during Becerra’s time as a congressman.

“How come Fauci was the face of Biden’s COVID response and not the HHS secretary? We may never know,” Semafor reporter David Weigel joked.

Others made comparisons to Democratic gubernatorial rival Katie Porter, who had a similar exchange last year with CBS California correspondent Julie Watts, telling her she didn’t want to have an “unhappy experience” and threatened to walk out of the interview over follow-up questions she received.

The Becerra campaign did not immediately respond to Fox News Digital‘s request for comment.

Former Virginia AG Miyares mocks Dems for filing appeal to wrong court

NEWYou can now listen to Fox News articles!

Democrats in Virginia apparently filed their redistricting appeal to the wrong Supreme Court, drawing even more mockery in a heated battle over the district lines of the state’s congressional map.

Jason Miyares, the former attorney general of Virginia, led the criticism online on Tuesday, pointing to a previous mistake where Democrats spelled the commonwealth’s name incorrectly on legal documents.

“Good news: Dems managed to spell Virginia correctly,” Miyares said in a post to X. “Bad news: They sent their emergency application to SCOTUS (Supreme Court of the United States) to the wrong court.”

“Baby steps,” the former Republican AG quipped.

Sure enough, Virginia legislators emblazoned their emergency petition with an address “to the Supreme Court of Virginia” instead of the highest U.S. court, according to an image of the document shared on social media by Miyares.

He was also one to point out on Friday Democrats’ misspelling of the state as “Virgnia” rather than “Virginia” in their filing to the Supreme Court. In that same mistake-riddled document, they wrote “Sentator” instead of Senator.

Miyares’ latest jab adds insult to injury as Democrats are still reeling from a Virginia Supreme Court decision that struck down a set of new maps designed to overwhelmingly favor their party in the November midterm elections. The post also highlights Republican glee at the foiled maps as Democrats hope to keep their gerrymandering push alive by advancing the issue to the Supreme Court (SCOTUS).

The new maps would have eliminated as many as four Republican-leaning districts.

Virginia’s highest court ruled late last week that Democratic Gov. Abigail Spanberger had improperly fast-tracked a constitutional amendment that temporarily undid state-level prohibitions on gerrymandering.

In particular, the court ruled that Spanberger’s redistricting push skirted requirements that any constitutional amendment must receive the approval of two separate sessions of the Virginia legislature before it can be put to a statewide referendum.

Most importantly, at least to the state court’s decision, is that those sessions must be decisively separated by an election.

By the time the referendum reached consideration in the General Assembly last year, early voting for 2025 had already begun. This led Virginia’s court to conclude the amendment’s consideration had not meaningfully been separated by a full election and therefore could not be upheld.

Virginia is now asking the Supreme Court to weigh in on state-level laws, arguing that the court “impermissibly transgressed the ordinary bounds of judicial review.”
