Lawsuit seeks to halt Trump’s makeover of Lincoln Memorial reflecting pool | Trump administration

0

A historic preservation group on Monday filed a lawsuit seeking to halt Donald Trump’s ongoing renovation to the Lincoln Memorial’s reflecting pool, the latest in a string of court challenges to efforts to remake Washington DC landmarks from the US president and former real estate developer.

The lawsuit, filed by the Cultural Landscape Foundation, alleged the renovation violates the National Historic Preservation Act, a law passed by Congress in 1996 that outlines procedures for changes to historic properties.

The nonprofit seeks an emergency order halting the Trump administration’s overhaul, which focuses on replacing the pool’s “gray stone” appearance with an industrial-strength coating in the color of a blue swimming pool.

“The dark grey, achromatic basin was not incidental to the design,” the lawsuit stated. “It was the design.“

The case was brought against the US Department of the Interior, the executive agency overseeing the renovation, which said in a statement that Trump “has done more to make our nation’s capital a shining beacon than any other president in the history of this country”.

Trump announced the project in April, saying “it’s going to be fantastic” and “really beautiful”. As the project – planned to cost nearly $7m – got underway, Trump’s motorcade took an unannounced trip to see the project up close.

Trump has said he was motivated to oversee the renovation after a friend visiting from Germany criticized the condition of the reflecting pool.

“He said, ‘It’s filthy, dirty. The water is disgusting-looking. It’s not representative of the country,’” Trump told reporters at a White House event.

Some of the president’s other projects in Washington, including renovations to the city’s golf courses and construction of a White House ballroom, have also drawn legal challenges. A federal judge on 31 March blocked above-ground construction of Trump’s ballroom, writing that “unless and until Congress blesses this project through statutory authorization, construction has to stop!”

An appeals court later lifted the injunction, allowing construction of the ballroom to proceed while litigation continues.

Maine Dem Graham Platner says he still won’t back Schumer as Senate leader

NEWYou can now listen to Fox News articles!

ELLSWORTH, MAINE — Graham Platner says he still wouldn’t support Sen. Chuck Schumer as Senate Democratic leader going forward, even after holding what he described as a “perfectly cordial conversation” with the top Democrat in the chamber.

Platner, an oyster farmer and Army and Marine veteran who served in the Afghanistan and Iraq wars, will face off in this year’s midterm elections in blue-leaning Maine against longtime Republican Sen. Susan Collins. The high-profile and competitive 2026 race is one of a handful across the country that will likely determine whether Republicans keep control of their slim Senate majority.

Platner, a first-time candidate, who is backed by progressive champions Sens. Bernie Sanders of Vermont and Elizabeth Warren of Massachusetts, became the Democrats’ presumptive nominee after his rival for the nomination, two-term Gov. Janet Mills, ended her campaign two weeks ago after trailing Platner in polling and fundraising.

Mills was supported by Schumer, who recruited the governor to enter the race.

SCHUMER’S ‘NUMBER 1 TARGET’ SAYS VOTERS WILL SEE HER DEMOCRATIC CHALLENGER AS TOO EXTREME

But Platner said what could have been a difficult conversation was anything but when he had a chance to speak with Schumer on the phone after Mills ended her bid.

“It was not awkward at all. He called to congratulate me on a good race, and nothing brings people together like agreeing that Susan Collins shouldn’t be in the U.S. Senate. So we had a perfectly cordial conversation.”

Platner said that “at this point, it very much feels that the Democratic Party will support us in our continued endeavor.” But he added “we’re going to keep doing what we’ve done up here, because it’s obviously what’s working.”

Platner is one of a small but growing number of progressive Senate candidates who say that, if elected in November, they won’t support Schumer as the Senate’s Democratic leader. Platner added that the topic of his lack of support for the Democratic leader didn’t come up in his conversation with Schumer.

Platner advocates an economically populist agenda as he takes aim at corporate influences and advocates for the working class as he runs for the Senate.

In an interview in Maine with Fox News Digital last week, Collins was asked if she believes Platner is too far to the left and extreme for voters in her northern New England state.

SIX MONTHS TILL MIDTERMS: THE TEN RACES THAT WILL DETERMINE THE SENATE’S MAJORITY

“I believe that will be the conclusion of Maine voters. But, obviously, I don’t take anything for granted,” the senator, who is running for a sixth six-year term in the Senate, answered.

But Platner charges that it’s Collins who is too “radical.”

“My response is that, trying to bring down costs for working Mainers. Trying to make sure that our communities don’t get emptied out because housing has become unaffordable for young people. Trying to create a system in which we are not seeing our health care system utilized as a way of just screwing working people all for the benefit of a health care insurance CEO, I don’t think that’s radical at all,” Platner said. “I think in fact that what most Mainers agree is what we have to be doing.”

And he charged, “What’s radical is somebody like Susan Collins, who, for decades now, has made sure that we pass policies that are going to help corporations and billionaires to the detriment of working people, supporting over and over and over again, illegal and insane foreign wars. She voted to send me to Iraq, and now she continues to vote to support the war in Iran,” Platner said. “I’m sorry that I think is much more radical to the people of Maine than having a health care system that doesn’t collapse before our eyes.”

It’s been less than two weeks since Platner became the Democrats’ presumptive nominee, and Republicans didn’t waste any time in taking aim at him.

A Republican group supporting Collins is already blasting Platner in a new ad over controversial comments he made over a decade ago on Reddit about women and rape and a well-publicized tattoo on his chest that resembled a Nazi symbol.

Among the comments is one from 2013, which Platner later deleted, that people concerned about rape should not “get so f—ed up they wind up having sex with someone they don’t mean to.”

Platner apologized for his controversial Reddit posts after they made headlines last fall soon after he launched his Senate campaign. And Platner has said he got the skull and crossbones tattoo in 2007 while drinking with fellow Marines stationed in Croatia. He said that he covered up the tattoo with a new design after learning last year that it resembled a Nazi symbol.

The candidate said he’s not concerned about the attack ad, which is likely just a taste of things to come.

“The Democratic establishment tried to use all those attacks against me and failed miserably,” Platner said as he referred to a spot from the Mills campaign before she dropped out of the race. “Now the Republican establishment is going to try to use the exact same attacks, and that will also fail miserably.”

Platner insisted that “the people of Maine understand exactly what this is. They’re not happy to see millions of dollars poured into negative TV ads in a state that, quite frankly, could use million dollars of investment in lots of other things instead of just negative television. And I don’t think it’s going to work, because it hasn’t up until this point.”

And pointing to the Republican attack ad, he said “we knew it was coming the whole time. Look, man, I fought in Iraq and Afghanistan. Somebody wants to say….mean things about me on television, I’m pretty sure I can handle it.”

Platner has also faced scrutiny for more recent Reddit posts, including one from five years ago where he described himself as a “communist” and “socialist.”

“You should read the comments in context. It’s very clear I’m joking,” he told Fox News Digital when asked about them. “It’s called shitposting. It’s when you argue with people on the internet and try to bother them. So, yeah, no, it’s very obviously not true.”

Graham Platner campaigns in race against Sen. Susan Collins of Maine

Platner was interviewed minutes after casting an early voting ballot in Maine’s primary and then holding an event near a gas station to showcase his newly released energy plan, which he says will help reduce people’s bills.

His proposal includes eliminating the national gas and diesel tax, a freeze on electricity rate increases and a fund for clean energy projects.

Platner said his energy plan is “very central” to his campaign. “I think energy costs right now are one of the things that are most damaging working families in this state. It is, in my opinion, essentially an existential crisis that we face.”

Democrats are spotlighting the cost of living as they overperform in special elections, which they hope is a prelude to winning back control of Congress in the midterms.

Republicans — as the party currently in power in Washington, D.C. — were already up against traditional political headwinds that typically lead to a loss of congressional seats. Add to that the challenging climate fueled by persistent inflation, rising gas prices tied to what polls show is an unpopular war with Iran and Trump’s underwater approval ratings.

Asked how she can overcome the blame pointed at Republicans over the high cost of living, Collins told Fox News Digital last week that she’s championed the low-income heating assistance program, which “helps low-income families and seniors stay warm during the cold winter months. I just recently made sure the final tranche of money was released because there is a lot of need in the state of Maine, and the cost of living is high here.”

Collins, who was interviewed at a food bank that expanded with federal funding the senator helped obtain, also emphasized her opposition to cuts “in food stamp benefits and in other programs that designed for low-income families because I know how important they are.”

Trump says he will discuss arms sales to Taiwan in meeting with China’s Xi | Donald Trump News

US weapons sales to Taiwan have been longstanding source of tension with Beijing, which claims island as its territory.

Donald Trump says he will raise the issue of US arms sales to Taiwan during his meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping later this week.

Trump reiterated his belief that a conflict with China over the status of Taiwan was unlikely in the near future.

“I’m going to have that discussion with President Xi,” Trump told reporters at the White House when asked about weapons sales. “President Xi would like us not to, and I’ll have that discussion. That’s one of the many things I’ll be talking about.”

Trump is scheduled to arrive in Beijing on Wednesday, ahead of talks scheduled for Thursday and Friday. It will be his first trip to China in nine years.

US defence support for Taiwan has long been a source of tension and potential flashpoint with Beijing, which claims the island as an essential part of its territory. The self-governed island has rejected threats of Chinese military force and insisted that its people must be free to decide their future.

The US is Taiwan’s most important backer and has provided the island with weapons that could be used to counter a potential Chinese assault. Trump announced a weapons package for Taiwan worth more than $11bn in December, the largest in history.

Also in December, China launched a series of provocative military drills simulating a blockade of Taiwanese ports, seen by many as a warning against outside forces aiding Taiwan.

While China has condemned US weapons sales, the US takes no official position on Taiwanese sovereignty and has called on Taipei and Beijing to peacefully resolve questions about the island’s status.

“I don’t think it’ll happen,” Trump said when asked about the potential for an eruption of tensions between the US and China over Taiwan. “I think we’ll be fine. I have a very good relationship with President Xi. He knows I don’t want that to happen.”

Paige Spiranac and her mom stun the internet, Lane Kiffin’s incredible shot at Ole Miss & the NFL did it again

Happy NFL schedule release week to all who celebrate! What? You’re not fired up for it? Come on! One of the best weeks of the year. Get your heads right!

Fine. It’s not that great, but it’s something. It ain’t exactly a busy time of year on the sports calendar. Yes, I know the NBA playoffs are going on. Again, it ain’t a busy time of year.

And while I do love the NHL playoffs, the Panthers aren’t in it this season, so my admittedly pink-hat fandom is taking this year off. At least I’m honest.

So, I instead choose to latch onto the NFL schedule release later this week. Frankly, I’m just trying to bridge the gap to my vacation later this month. Sure, it’s a “vacation” with four other families and a dozen kids all under one roof for a week, but a “vacation” nonetheless.

Let’s start bridging the gap, and get this week going.

Welcome to a Monday Nightcaps — the one where Paige Spiranac gears up for the PGA Championship with her mom and rattles America’s cage.

What else? I’ve got the best of the rest from a big weekend of #content, you will NEVER guess who gets the first Sunday Night Football game of the season, and how do we feel about Caitlin Clark walking out with Morgan Wallen Saturday night after a Fever loss? Seemed … odd … to me.

To give equal time, per the FCC’s law, we will also check in with Angel Reese! It’s only fair.

OK, grab you whatever you’d like for National Eat What You Want Day, and settle in for a Monday ‘Cap!

Paige Spiranac is ready for a big week of PGA Championship golf

Hope everyone had a big Mother’s Day Sunday. We smoked a pork butt down here, which, to be fair, was a lot more enjoyable in Florida back in March when it was 65 degrees outside. I got in the car Saturday afternoon and the dial said 104. I ain’t kidding.

MADISON BEER PUT JUSTIN HERBERT IN NEW STEAMY MUSIC VIDEO, XANDRA POHL THREW OUT FIRST PITCH & GRILLING SEASON

Seems to me that summer is here just a bit earlier this year down here, which I’m sure Al Gore is thrilled about. It’s only fair, right? We had an abnormally cold winter — “winter” — so it’s now time to pay the piper. The flies are out in full force, the breeze is suddenly gone, and I’m back to going through three shirts a day.

I’ve lived here my whole life. May 11 is a tad early for this, but it is what it is. Patriots adapt and adjust. Welcome back, summer.

OK, let’s go ahead and kick off the week with Paige Spiranac and her mother lighting the internet on fire ahead of the PGA Championship:

What a weekend of #content!

Not AI, folks. That’s the real deal. What a missile from the Spiranacs on Mother’s Day! I think we’re in for a big week of major championship golf.

For those wondering, Scottie Scheffler opens as the favorite at Aronimink, followed by Rory, Cam Young and Jon Rahm. I still feel like we’re getting close to another Brooks Koepka major victory. I don’t know why, but I can feel it in my plums.

You can grab him at 4500 right now. Seems like a decent little sprinkle given the Strait of Hormuz still ain’t playing ball with us.

In fact, let’s check in with Brooks as we dive into the best #content from the second weekend of May!

Lane, Cowboys & the WNBA girls are BACK!

Another strong weekend. There wasn’t a ton going on, but you all made it work. Well done.

Couple thoughts …

  1. The last one is a humdinger. I can’t believe it’s real. But … it’s real. What a family. What a name(s).
  2. “Dumbocrats” isn’t Trump’s best work, but it still plays. Sometimes the simpler, the better.
  3. I’m just about over the Vrabel stuff. At this point, wake me up when the sex tape drops. Anything else is just noise.
  4. God, I miss John Clayton. Remember the old Clayton vs. Sean Salisbury bits on ESPN? We had it so good back then.
  5. Where do we stand on Caitlin Clark walking out with Morgan Wallen after an opening day loss? Not the best look. I assume it was pre-planned, but still …
  6. Good to have Angel Reese back! To be fair, she did have the game-sealing block down the stretch and a double-double (with plenty of mebounds!).
  7. The NFL should 100% start interviewing refs during commercial breaks. Lord knows it’s better than anything we get from the ref in the TV booth.

“Gene, what do you see?”

“I agree, Jim, back to you.”

OK, let’s rapid-fire this Monday class into a big Monday night. First up? Speaking of the NFL … guess who gets the Week 1 SNF game this season?!

Cowboys-Giants! Unreal. The most predictable game every single year. If the Giants are even moderately interesting, you can almost guarantee that Week 1 is gonna be Cowboys-Giants on SNF. I think it’s the NFL rule book at this point.

And for those who think I’m making it up … these two have now opened the season against each other eight times in the last 15 years. Eight! The last time was 2023, when Dallas won 40-0 on … Sunday Night Football.

Cha-ching!

FOX NEWS SPORTS HUDDLE NEWSLETTER: INSIDE LANE KIFFIN’S OLE MISS BREAKUP AS FANS UNLEASH FURY OVER MOVE TO LSU

Next? Let’s check in with Lane Kiffin, who for some reason sat down with Vanity Fair recently and pumped out this totally legit piece of information:

When he was coaching there, Kiffin says, top recruits would tell him, “‘Hey, coach, we really like you. But my grandparents aren’t letting me move to Oxford, Mississippi.’ That doesn’t come up when you say Baton Rouge, Louisiana. Parents were sitting here this weekend saying the campus’s diversity feels so great: ‘It feels like there’s no segregation’”

Yeah, no. Just … no. NO chance that ever happened. Do you really believe that five-star recruits were telling Lane Kiffin they wouldn’t play for him because of … segregation? Come on. What a ridiculous quote. What world am I living in here?

This, by the way, was Lane Kiffin less than ONE YEAR AGO:

Amazing. They’re all so full of crap.

OK, that’s it for today. Good start to the week. I’ll go ahead and leave everyone with Tiger vs. Bob May in 2000 to kick off PGA Championship week.

It’s the right thing to do.

South Africa plans presidential impeachment probe over ‘Farmgate’ scandal | Corruption News

0

The country’s parliament says its speaker will begin the process of setting up the impeachment committee.

South Africa’s parliament is set to establish an impeachment committee to probe allegations against President Cyril Ramaphosa in the “Farmgate” scandal.

The lower house of parliament said on Monday that its speaker will set up the body to investigate. The move was ordered by the country’s highest court last week as it revived impeachment proceedings against Ramaphosa.

list of 3 itemsend of list

The constitutional court on Friday said that parliament’s decision to block an inquiry four years ago into the scandal was inconsistent with the constitution.

The impeachment committee will review the evidence against Ramaphosa regarding the scandal, which centres on a large sum in foreign currency hidden in a sofa at a farm property owned by the president, before deciding whether to recommend formal proceedings.

It is expected to deliberate over the matter for several months.

South African President Cyril Ramaphosa (CL) and Former Minister and constitutional negotiator Roelf Meyer (CR) looks at attendees during the first National Convention at the University of South Africa (UNISA) in Pretoria on August 15, 2025. The scandal centres on the 2020 theft of $4m in foreign cash that was stuffed in a sofa on Ramaphosa’s Phala Phala game farm.

Amid questions about how the president, who took to power on the promise of fighting corruption, acquired the money, whether he declared it, and why it was hidden in furniture rather than in a bank, Ramaphosa has denied wrongdoing.

He said last week that he respected the court’s judgement to revive impeachment proceedings.

However, in an address to the nation on Monday evening, he said that he will not resign, and that he plans to legally challenge an independent panel’s report that found preliminary evidence he had committed misconduct.

Ramaphosa’s African National Congress has called a meeting of its National Executive Committee on Tuesday to discuss what to do about the scandal, a party spokesperson said.

The case against Ramaphosa was brought by two opposition parties – the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) and the African Transformation Movement (ATM). The EFF has called on the president, who has been in power since 2018, to resign.

However, even if the impeachment committee’s findings are negative, the president would still likely survive a vote in the lower house of parliament, where a two-thirds majority is required to remove him from office.

The ANC retains more than one-third of the seats in the National Assembly, despite losing its majority in 2024.

You can only trust yourself to represent you in court after pooping out stolen Tiffany diamonds

Who could forget the story about the man claiming to be the assistant of an Orlando Magic player who stole more than $700k in jewelry? He captivated the country for two weeks last spring after swallowing the stolen goods.

Why two weeks? Because that’s how long it took for nature to run its course and for the police to retrieve the expensive earnings he had ingested.

Texas man has decided to represent himself in court after arrest for allegedly stealing, swallowing, and pooping out Tiffany diamonds. (Getty)

Jaythan Lawrence Gilder, a reported convicted felon with a lengthy rap sheet, was taken to the VIP room of a Tiffany and Co. jewelry store in an Orlando mall after allegedly claiming he was an NBA player’s assistant.

He grabbed some of the jewelry they had laid in front of him and headed for the door. He reportedly struggled with the sliding glass door before shoving an employee out of the way as he made his escape.

Police caught up with Gilder in Florida’s panhandle, where he decided to swallow the two sets of diamond earrings worth roughly $770,000 rather than hand them over to police.

The police then took him to the hospital, producing amazing X-rays revealing what was later confirmed to be, after he pooped them out, the missing Tiffany diamond earrings he was accused of leaving the store with.

As if the story up to that point wasn’t enough, “The Man Who Pooped Tiffany Diamonds,” as The Smoking Gun has nicknamed him, isn’t finished. He’s decided to add to this poopshow by representing himself in court.

That’s right, Jaythan Gilder has rejected a plea deal offered by prosecutors and has decided to represent himself at trial. In a recent court appearance, a judge granted his request to waive his right to counsel.

He will have his court-appointed attorney available for consultation when he enters a courtroom next month in Orlando for the burglary/grand theft case. The 33-year-old from Texas has been in jail since his arrest last year.

What’s the worst thing that could happen when representing himself? Well, he’s facing some serious time as a habitual offender if he’s convicted.

TSG reports that he could face up to 30 years for robbery, with a 15-year mandatory minimum and up to life, with a 30-year mandatory minimum for grand theft.

On one hand, it might not be wise to take this on alone. On the other hand, you don’t want a lawyer trying to explain how stolen earrings ended up in your poop. If anyone is going to do that, it should be you, right?

Ruckus over appointments in Bengal: Congress alleged, Jairam Ramesh said – collusion between Election Commission and BJP – West Bengal Congress Slams Bjp Eci Bureaucratic Appointments Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari Update

0

The Congress Party has launched a scathing attack on the Central and State governments over the recent administrative reshuffle in West Bengal. On Monday, Congress raised serious questions on the appointments of the new Chief Secretary of the state and advisor to the Chief Minister. The country’s main opposition party claims that these appointments are evidence of ‘open collusion’ between the Election Commission and the BJP. Congress alleged that a big game was played behind the scenes during the Bengal Assembly elections.

Serious allegations on the role of officials
Congress General Secretary Jairam Ramesh has made a direct attack on these appointments. He said that 1990 batch IAS officer Manoj Aggarwal has been made the new Chief Secretary of the state. Aggarwal was holding the responsibility of Chief Electoral Officer during the elections. Similarly, Subrata Gupta has been appointed Chief Advisor to Chief Minister Subhendu Adhikari. Gupta had worked as a special role observer during the elections. According to Jairam Ramesh, it is clear from these appointments that impartiality has been flouted.

Claim of irregularities in voter list
Congress has also raised questions on the purity of the election process. Jairam Ramesh alleged that the Election Commission worked to benefit the BJP. He claimed that before the Bengal elections, names of about 91 lakh voters were removed from the list. In this, 27 lakh people were deprived of voting. According to Congress, all this was done as part of a strategy. Its objective was to make the electoral path easier for the BJP.

Administrative picture of Bengal changed
The West Bengal government had made a major administrative reshuffle on Sunday. Two IAS and seven WBCS officers have been deployed in the Chief Minister’s Office. Hours after Subhendu Adhikari took oath, retired IAS Subrata Gupta was appointed his advisor. Shantanu Bala has been made the personal secretary of the Chief Minister. Congress says that now no effort is being made to hide the nexus.
