Philippine presidential hopeful Sara Duterte impeached for second time | Philippines

0

The Philippine vice-president, Sara Duterte, has been impeached over allegations she misused public funds, amassed unexplained wealth and threatened the lives of President Ferdinand Marcos Jr and his wife, in a case that could complicate her presidential ambitions.

Duterte, the daughter of the detained former president Rodrigo Duterte, was impeached by an overwhelming majority of lawmakers in the House of Representatives, which is dominated by allies of Marcos.

She previously ran to be vice-president in a joint campaign with Marcos, but they are now fierce enemies.

The complaints against her will now be passed to the Senate, where she will face trial. If found guilty, Duterte will be banned from public office, derailing her plan to run for president in 2028.

She has denied any wrongdoing. In a statement, her defence counsel said: “The burden now rests on the accusers to substantiate their claims in accordance with the constitution, the law, and rules on evidence.”

Duterte has led many early opinion polls ahead of the 2028 election, and her family remains a powerful force in Philippine politics despite the legal battles surrounding it. Her father was last year arrested and sent to the international criminal court in The Hague. There he faces charges of crimes against humanity in relation to his so-called “war on drugs”, which killed thousands of people during his 2016-2022 presidency.

It is far from certain that Sara Duterte will be found guilty by the Senate. A conviction in an impeachment trial requires the backing of two-thirds of its 24 members, and analysts point out that Duterte has stronger support in the Senate compared with the lower house, after candidates aligned with her family performed better than expected in midterm elections last year.

Shortly before the impeachment vote, the Senate elected a long-time ally of the Duterte family, Alan Peter Cayetano, as its new president.

Cayetano was a running mate of Rodrigo Duterte and served as foreign secretary under his administration. He denied his appointment was related to the impeachment vote.

This is the second time Sara Duterte has been impeached by the lower house. She was also impeached on similar grounds last year but avoided a trial after she successfully petitioned the Philippine supreme court to declare the move unconstitutional on a technicality.

The allegations against Duterte focus on claims she misused public funds while vice-president and as education secretary, a post she previously held, and include bribery. She is also accused of threatening Marcos, his wife, Louise Araneta-Marcos, and his cousin Martin Romualdez, a former house speaker.

The threat was made during an online press conference during which Duterte said she would have Marcos, his wife and Romualdez killed by an assassin if she herself were killed.

She later said she was not threatening the president and that her comments had been misinterpreted.

Marcos, a son of the former president Ferdinand Marcos, has tried to distance himself from the case against his former ally. He also survived separate impeachment efforts in February, with his allies in the lower house voting to dismiss allegations against him, including claims of corruption. Marcos also denied wrongdoing.

Jacob Fatu lost to Roman Reigns at WWE Backlash but a statement was made

NEWYou can now listen to Fox News articles!

There was a lot on the line coming into WWE’s Backlash premium live event. Jacob Fatu was looking to make a statement against Roman Reigns, Trick Williams hoped to prove he wasn’t a fluke and The Miz and Kit Wilson tried to escape a “curse.”

For the most part, Backlash went as planned. Reigns defeated Fatu to retain the World Heavyweight Championship but received a vicious beatdown after the match was over. Williams defended the United States Championship against Sami Zayn as the challenger was distracted by Lil Yachty during the match.

The WWE Universe was abuzz with who Danhausen’s mystery partner was going to be. Wilson and The Miz saw as Mini-hausen emerged from a “cloning machine” to provide backup to the “Very Nice, Very Evil” superstar. Danhausen received a whole bunch of help from a few Mini-hausens through the match. In the end, it was Danhausen who scored a pin on The Miz.

Meanwhile, Bron Breakker picked up one of the biggest victories of his career when he defeated Seth Rollins. Breakker nailed Rollins with a torpedo spear at the end of a hard-fought match.

Then, there was the Iyo Sky-Asuka match

A new chapter

Iyo Sky and Asuka put on arguably the match of the night during Backlash. The bad blood that had festered between the two competitors came to a boiling point. Asuka had painted Sky with her poison mist in a confrontation before the match.

But it was Sky who would get the better of Asuka. Two Bullet Train Attacks from Sky and the Over the Moonsault is what helped Sky to the victory. Asuka tried to blind Sky with poison mist, but Sky put up Wade Barrett’s notebook to block the blue.

Sky hit the Over the Moonsault perfectly and got the three count. But what happened next may have signaled a new road for Asuka.

Asuka was seen in tears as she and Sky embraced in the middle of the ring. Before the match, Asuka posted a cryptic photo of herself looking out the window. Then, Sky posted a message about her match for Asuka on X.

“Our story comes to its final chapter with today’s match,” she wrote. “The moment the match ended, my heart was filled with all sorts of emotions.

“Meeting ASUKA-san, Spending the same time together, Being able to learn so much up close — These are irreplaceable treasures to me. Thank you so much ASUKA-San. We love you ASUKA-San.”

This didn’t appear to be the end for Asuka but it definitely felt like a “see you later” moment.

WWE STAR DANHAUSEN REFLECTS ON FIRST MONTHS WITH COMPANY, GIVES UPDATE ON DANHAUSENETTES

“Fairway to Hell” scores a hole-in-one

It was only a one-hour event, but All Elite Wrestling’s (AEW) “Fairway to Hell” special received high praise on Saturday night. The matches were held at the SoFi Center in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida, which is an indoor golf center that holds The Golf League events.

The greenery and the sand traps stayed in place as the ring was set up in the middle of it all.

Darby Allin defended the AEW World Championship against Pac, Mark Davis became the new AEW national champion with a victory over Jack Perry, The Divine Dominion of Megan Bayne and Lena Kross made easy work of Rachel Ley and Ruthie Slay and “Speedball” Mike Bailey defeated Kiran Grey.

Aside from the wrestling, the stunning visuals of Allin throwing Pac into a bunker and Pac tossing Allin off the second deck left fans delighted.

It was definitely a risk to use the venue for pro wrestling, but it paid off in AEW’s favor. There will certainly have to be another taping or two from the facility in the future.

All eyes on Leon Slater

Total Nonstop Action Wrestling (TNA) has a major star in Leon Slater and if fate has it, he will set a record should he defeat Cedric Alexander for the title later this week.

Slater and Alexander will battle it out on Thursday night on “Impact.” If Slater wins, he will be the longest reigning X Division champion surpassing Austin Aries.

Aries held the TNA X Division Championship for 298 days after winning it at No Surrender 2011. He later vacated the championship in exchange for a shot at the TNA World Heavyweight Championship. Slater won the title in July 2025 at Slammiversary.

Aries reacted to Slater approaching his record at the end of April.

“Big fan of @LEONSLATER_ and I have no doubt he will surpass my record, but he will also do it having never stepped in the ring with me. Number of days is great, but quantity ≠ quality,” he wrote on X.

Mason Rook arrives at NXT

Mason Rook has only been with WWE NXT for two weeks and he has already made it clear that he has his sights set on the NXT Championship.

NXT champion Tony D’Angelo went one-on-one with Tavion Heights in a non-title match on Tuesday night. Kam Hendrix interfered in the match, but NXT North American champion Myles Borne came in and chased him off.

D’Angelo hit Heights with Dead to Rights and won the match. As D’Angelo was paying his respect to Heights, Rook attacked him from behind. Rook picked up D’Angelo over his shoulders and drove him into Heights, who was seated in the corner.

Rook was the one standing tall.

“My name is Mason Rook and I’ve arrived in NXT,” he said to the camera.

Rook, formerly known as Will Kroos, made a name for himself in Progress Wrestling where he was the Progress atlas champion. He also spent time on the independent circuit in Britain as well as Pro Wrestling Noah in Japan.

“Like I said, Mason Rook has arrived in NXT,” he said as he walked to the back. “And if you didn’t know, now you know.”

John Cena also showed support for Rook.

AEW Double or Nothing card comes together

Darby Allin and Maxwell Jacob Friedman (MJF) have to hash out the final details but it looks like they are trending toward a hair vs. title match at Double or Nothing for the AEW World Championship. Allin still has to defend his title on “Dynamite,” but MJF will be expected to show up and sign the match contract if he wants to keep contending for the title.

On its face, the card is pretty stacked. Double or Nothing will take place on May 24 at Louis Armstrong Stadium in Queens, New York.

  • Kazuchika Okada (c) vs. Konosuke Takeshita for the AEW International Championship.
  • Dax Harwood and Cash Wheeler (c) vs. Adam Copeland and Christian Cage in an I Quit match for the AEW World Tag Team Championship.
  • Chris Jericho, Bobby Lashley, Shelton Benjamin, Jack Perry, Kenny Omega, Matt Jackson and Nick Jackson vs. Ricochet, Bishop Kaun, Toa Liona, Mark Davis and three Don Callis Family members in a stadium stampede match.
  • Thekla (c) vs. Hikaru Shida vs. Kris Statlander vs. Jamie Hayter for the AEW Women’s World Championship.

Checkmarx tackles another TeamPCP intrusion as Jenkins plugin sabotaged

DevOps

Cybercrooks ruin engineers’ weekends with Saturday attack

Checkmarx’s software engineers are still working to remove a malicious version of the code security outfit’s Jenkins plugin after detecting an unauthorized upload over the weekend.

It updated customers on Saturday, May 9, after discovering a version of its AST Scanner, which is used for security scans in Jenkins CI pipelines, was made available via the Jenkins Marketplace.

“We are aware that a modified version of the Checkmarx Jenkins AST plugin was published to the Jenkins Marketplace,” it said in a statement. “We are in the process of publishing a new version of this plug-in.”

Versions published as of May 9, 2026, should not be trusted, it added, before urging all users to check they’re running the correct release (2.0.13-829.vc72453fa_1c16) published on December 17, 2025.

Installed by several hundred controllers, the plugin remains available at the time of writing, and appears as the most recently available version, although pull requests actioned on Monday morning suggest this will soon be pulled down.

“What makes this particularly dangerous for Jenkins users is the trust model at play,” said SOCRadar in its coverage. “The Checkmarx Jenkins plugin is a tool people install specifically to improve the security of their pipelines.

“A backdoored version doesn’t just compromise one project; it rides trusted infrastructure into every build pipeline it touches, with access to source code, environment variables, tokens, and whatever secrets the runner can see.”

Shai-Hulud?

The Dune-themed malware, named after its self-propagating wormable nature, first caused a stir in September last year as hundreds of npm packages were compromised.

Shail-Hulud 2.0 was first seen in the following November, affecting over 25,000 GitHub repos, before the Mini Shai-Hulud packages, the same ones that were injected into Checkmarx’s Jenkins plugin, hit SAP npm packages in the earlier stages of the recent TeamPCP supply chain attacks.

Security engineer Adnan Khan spotted the compromise quickly over the weekend. The crew behind the early supply chain attack affecting Checkmarx in April, TeamPCP, defaced the company’s GitHub and published six packages, each with a description alluding to the Shai-Hulud wormable malware.

These packages no longer appear on Checkmarx’s GitHub, but TeamPCP made multiple changes to the AST plugins page, renaming it to “Checkmarx-Fully-Hacked-by-TeamPCP-and-Their-Customers-Should-Cancel-Now,” and altering the description to claim CheckMarx failed to rotate its secrets.

The latest infiltration of Checkmarx’s internals marks the third time TeamPCP has compromised the company’s packages in as many months.

As previously seen in The Register, the crooks successfully targeted Checkmarx’s AST plugin for GitHub Actions and its KICS static analysis tool back in March, deploying credential-stealing malware.

SOCRadar said the latest TeamPCP compromise of the Jenkins plugin suggests that either TeamPCP was telling the truth about Checkmarx’s secrets rotation, or its members took advantage of an additional persistence mechanism that the security vendor failed to notice during its response to the March intrusion. ®

EU rejects Putin call for Gerhard Schröder role in Ukraine peace talks | Russia

0

The EU on Monday dismissed Vladimir Putin’s suggestion that the Kremlin-friendly former German chancellor Gerhard Schröder could serve as a European mediator in peace talks aimed at ending the war in Ukraine.

Over the weekend, the Russian leader put forward Schröder – a longtime ally – as a possible figure to help restart talks with Europe, saying he would “personally” favour the former German leader for the role.

Schröder, 82, previously held senior positions in Russian energy projects, including work on the Nord Stream gas pipelines and a seat on the board of Russian oil company Rosneft. He stepped down from the role several months after Moscow’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine under mounting pressure, but has never explicitly condemned Putin over the invasion.

Responding to the proposal, Kaja Kallas, the EU’s top diplomat, told journalists in Brussels before a meeting of foreign ministers: “First, if we give Russia the right to appoint a negotiator on our behalf, that would not be very wise.”

Kallas added that Schröder could not be considered an impartial mediator given his past work as a “high-level lobbyist for Russian state-owned companies”.

“It is clear why Putin wants him to be the person, so that actually he would be sitting on both sides of the table,” she said.

Putin’s surprise pitch comes as the Russian president suggested the conflict in Ukraine could be drawing to a close – a rare instance in which Putin appeared to hint at a possible timeline for ending the invasion.

But Putin’s top advisers have stressed that the Kremlin continues to demand that Ukraine withdraw its troops from the eastern Donbas region as a precondition for future negotiations.

The Russian president remains determined to seize the remaining parts of the region by force this year before any serious talks begin, people familiar with his thinking told the Guardian.

Ukraine has flatly rejected any suggestion it would unilaterally withdraw from its own territory, a position bolstered by recent battlefield dynamics in which Russian advances have largely ground to a halt.

The two armies are showing mounting signs of exhaustion and continuing to sustain heavy casualties, while trading strikes on each other’s energy infrastructure.

Against that backdrop, analysts say a diplomatic breakthrough is unlikely.

A US-brokered ceasefire is due to expire on Tuesday and Moscow has rejected prolonging the truce.

But EU leaders have in recent months stepped up efforts to secure the bloc a seat at the table in any future substantive peace negotiations.

European capitals have long insisted that no discussions or decisions about Ukraine should take place without Kyiv’s involvement.

Many across the continent now fear that talks between the US, Russia and Ukraine aimed at ending the more than four-year-long war have made little progress, while leaving the EU increasingly sidelined and vulnerable to pressure to accept a deal it does not support.

There is little prospect of Schröder emerging as Europe’s representative with the Kremlin.

Schröder’s record of defending Moscow has repeatedly put him at odds with mainstream European opinion. After evidence of mass killings emerged in the Kyiv suburb of Bucha in April 2022, he said he did not believe the massacre had been ordered by the Kremlin.

Germany’s Europe minister, Gunther Krichbaum, said that Schröder “has not necessarily demonstrated in the past that he could act as a neutral mediator, as an honest broker, so to speak,” as he was “heavily influenced” by Putin.

“Close friendships may be legitimate everywhere in the world, but they don’t contribute to being perceived as an honest negotiating partner.”

Margus Tsahkna, Estonia’s foreign minister, said: “Gerhard Schröder is Putin’s idea. I think they are very close. Gerhard Schröder will not be representing Europe.”

Mark Galeotti, an expert on Russian politics, described the suggestion as a “classic Putin idea”.

“He tries to sound reasonable, but frames any potential dialogue in terms most comfortable to him,” Galeotti told Times Radio.

Schröder has not publicly commented on the idea.

American Academy of Pediatrics urges schools to protect daily recess time

NEWYou can now listen to Fox News articles!

Recess may look like downtime, but pediatricians say cutting it could cost kids far more than a few minutes on the playground.

The American Academy of Pediatrics released updated guidance for the first time in more than a decade that urges schools to protect recess, highlighting that the unstructured break delivers major benefits for kids’ health, learning and behavior.

“It has a very powerful benefit if it’s used to the fullest,” said Dr. Robert Murray, a lead author of the new guidance, which was published Monday in the journal Pediatrics.

Researchers say recess helps students reset between lessons, improving focus and memory. It also gives kids time to build social skills, boost confidence and stay physically active, a key factor as 1 in 5 U.S. children and teens struggle with obesity.

THIS SIMPLE OUTDOOR ACTIVITY CAN IMPROVE AMERICANS’ HEALTH, SAYS GOVERNOR

Despite those benefits, recess time has been shrinking for years. Since the mid-2000s, up to 40% of school districts have reduced or eliminated it, according to data from the Springboard to Active Schools group and U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

The group is pushing schools to reverse that trend, recommending at least 20 minutes of daily recess and multiple breaks. It further warned against using it as punishment.

“If the child is disruptive or rude and disrespectful, recess is one of the things that teachers use to punish kids,” Murray said, noting that those students often need it most.

GOV. KATHY HOCHUL: WHY NEW YORK IS SAVING EDUCATION BY GETTING PHONES OUT OF CLASSROOMS

Doctors also stress that recess isn’t just for younger children. As screen time rises, older students need time to unplug, move and recharge.

“As kids get older, they’re more on their screens,” said Dr. Lauren Fiechtner, a pediatric specialist. “So it’s really helpful, I think, for outdoor activity and recess to be happening. Recess is great. We all kind of need recess.”

In other countries such as Denmark, Japan and the United Kingdom, students already get more frequent breaks, often after every 45 to 50 minutes of instruction. Experts say this model could help U.S. schools improve both learning and student well-being.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.
