Italian police fire tear gas at protesters near Olympics venue | World News

Italian police have fired tear gas and water cannon at protesters who threw firecrackers, smoke bombs and bottles at them near a Winter Olympics venue.

Officers in riot gear and with shields confronted about 100 protesters, some of whom wore hoods and scarves to cover their faces, after they broke away from a main demonstration and appeared to be trying to reach the Santagiulia Olympic ice hockey rink.

A group of protesters also set off smoke bombs and firecrackers about half a mile (800 metres) from the Olympic Village, where around 1,500 athletes are staying.

Six people were arrested during the altercation, according to police sources.

The main demonstration saw an estimated 10,000 people taking to the streets of Milan on Saturday, on the first full day of the Winter Olympics, to protest against the environmental, economic and social impact of the Games.

Olympic infrastructure projects criticised

The march was organised by grassroots unions, housing-rights groups and social centre community activists.

Protesters carried cardboard cutouts of trees to represent the trees that were felled to build the new bobsled run in Cortina for the Olympics, arguing that infrastructure projects like this have damaged the environment in mountain communities.

“They bypassed the laws that usually are needed for major infrastructure projects, citing urgency for the Games,” one protester said, adding that he was concerned that the private company organising the event would eventually pass on debt to Italian taxpayers.

The International Olympic Committee argues that the Games largely use existing facilities, making them more sustainable.

Police brought the splinter group of violent protesters under control before the main demonstration finished, according to Italian news agency ANSA.

‘ICE out’ signs

Some protesters said they were opposed to the deployment of US immigration and customs enforcement (ICE) agents to Italy to provide security to the US delegation of athletes, following previous protests in the buildup to the Games.

US Homeland Security Investigations, an ICE unit that focuses on cross-border crimes, often sends officers to events abroad like the Olympics to help with security.

The ICE unit used to crack down on immigration in the US is known as Enforcement and Removal Operations, and there is no indication its officers have been deployed to Italy.

‘Non-negotiable’: Iran says missiles off the table in talks with the US | Politics News

0

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi says he hopes talks with the United States will resume soon, while US President Donald Trump pledged another round of negotiations next week following mediated discussions in Oman.

Araghchi told Al Jazeera on Saturday that Iran’s missile programme was “never negotiable” in Friday’s talks, and warned Tehran would target US military bases in the Middle East if the US attacks Iranian territory.

He added that despite the negotiations in Muscat being indirect, “an opportunity arose to shake hands with the American delegation”. The talks were “a good start“, but he insisted “there is a long way to go to build trust”.

Iranians in the capital, Tehran, however, seemed less positive.

“In my opinion, like previous times, negotiations will end without results because both sides are sticking to their own positions and not willing to back down,” a woman who asked to remain anonymous told Al Jazeera.

Abdullah al-Shayji, a US foreign policy expert at Kuwait University, said he hopes for a new deal between the two foes but is not feeling optimistic.

“There is a strong position” from the US and “being provoked by” Israel to “clamp down on the Iranians because they feel that Iran is at its weakest point” so that it will be easy to extract concessions from it, especially after last month’s antigovernment demonstrations, al-Shayji said from the Al Jazeera Forum in Qatar’s capital Doha.

‘Inalienable right’

Despite calling the talks “very good” on Friday, Trump signed an executive order effective from Saturday that called for the “imposition of tariffs” on countries still doing business with Iran.

The US also announced new sanctions against numerous shipping entities and vessels aimed at curbing Iran’s oil exports.

More than one-quarter of Iran’s trade is with China, including $18bn in imports and $14.5bn in exports in 2024, according to World Trade Organization data.

Nuclear enrichment is Iran’s “inalienable right and must continue”, Araghchi said, adding, “We are ready to reach a reassuring agreement on enrichment. The Iranian nuclear case will only be resolved through negotiations.”

Iran’s missile programme is non-negotiable because it relates to a “defence issue”, he said.

Washington has sought to address Iran’s ballistic missile programme and its support for armed groups in the region – issues that Israel has pushed to include in the talks, according to media reports.

Tehran has repeatedly rejected expanding the scope of the negotiations beyond the nuclear issue.

“The Iranians are vehemently opposed to any concessions,” said al-Shayji, as is the US, which makes it extremely hard for countries leading mediation efforts to “get them closer together”.

Friday’s negotiations were the first since nuclear talks between Iran and the US collapsed last year following Israel’s unprecedented bombing campaign against Iran, which triggered a 12-day war.

Following widespread antigovernment protests in Iran last month, Trump ramped up threats against the country, deploying the USS Abraham Lincoln to the Middle East.

‘Peace through strength’

Trump’s lead negotiators in Oman, special envoy Steve Witkoff and presidential adviser Jared Kushner, visited the aircraft carrier stationed in the Arabian Sea on Saturday.

In a social media post, Witkoff said the aircraft carrier and its strike group are “keeping us safe and upholding President Trump’s message of peace through strength.”

Witkoff said he spoke with the pilot who downed an Iranian drone that approached the carrier “without clear intent” on Tuesday.

“Proud to stand with the men and women who defend our interests, deter our adversaries, and show the world what American readiness and resolve look like, on watch every day,” said Witkoff.

While Trump has sought to use the aircraft carrier’s deployment as a means to exert pressure on Iran, al-Shayji said this cannot be a long-term strategy.

“He [Trump] can’t keep his forces at alert stage for too long. This would really discredit Trump’s administration regarding being very harsh and hard-liners on Iran,” he said.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is set to meet Trump on Wednesday to discuss the Iran talks, his office said in a statement.

Netanyahu “believes any negotiations must include limitations on ballistic missiles and a halting of the support for the Iranian axis”, it said, referring to Iran’s allies in the region.

During the 12-day war, US warplanes bombed Iranian nuclear sites.

Araghchi expressed hope that Washington would refrain from “threats and pressure” so “the talks can continue”.

NYPD Sgt. Erik Duran convicted of manslaughter in Bronx cooler death: report

0

NEWYou can now listen to Fox News articles!

A New York City Police Department (NYPD) sergeant who fatally threw a plastic cooler at a scooter-riding suspect fleeing a drug bust was convicted of manslaughter on Friday.

Sgt. Erik Duran, 38, was found guilty of the August 2023 death of Eric Duprey, who was speeding away from undercover police along a sidewalk in the Bronx after allegedly being busted for selling them $20 worth of cocaine, trial testimony revealed, the New York Post reported.

Duran became the first NYPD officer found guilty of a crime for killing someone while on duty in New York City in a decade, the Post reported. He faces up to 15 years in prison and is scheduled to be sentenced on March 19.

The case was decided by a judge rather than a jury after Duran waived his right to a jury trial.

(Luiz C. Ribeiro/New York Daily News via Getty Images)

The case was prosecuted by New York Attorney General Letitia James’ office, which has jurisdiction over police-involved deaths under a 2015 state law.

Surveillance video shows Duprey driving on a sidewalk toward a group of people who do not appear to be in uniform.

As he approaches, the video shows Duran picking up a red object — the cooler — and throwing it at the motorcyclist’s head from close range. Duprey then loses control and is thrown toward a tree as the motorcycle veers into the street. The bike then smashes into a metal barricade before coming to rest against a parked car. He was pronounced dead minutes after the crash, police said.

Duprey had fled as plainclothes narcotics unit officers tried to arrest him on suspicion of selling drugs in what’s known as a “buy-and-bust” operation, according to police.

Bronx Supreme Court Judge Guy Mitchell announced the verdict Friday afternoon in a courtroom filled with police officers on one side and Duprey’s relatives, friends and activists on the other, the New York Post reported. Court officers separated the groups.

Duran looked down at the defense table as the verdict was read while Duprey’s mother, Gretchen Soto, and his partner, Pearl Velez — the mother of his two children — cried in the gallery.

“I never lost faith. I always was, you know…that justice is going to happen,” Velez told reporters afterward.

Following the conviction, Sergeants Benevolent Association (SBA) President Vincent Vallelong issued a statement calling the verdict a “miscarriage of justice” and stating it sends a “terrible message” to officers who use force in defense.

“We vigorously maintain Sergeant Duran’s innocence,” Vallelong said. “The verdict rendered by Judge Mitchell is clearly against the weight of the credible evidence.”

“Verdicts such as this send a terrible message to hard-working cops: Should you use force to defend yourself, your fellow police officers or the citizens of the city, no matter how justified your actions, you risk criminal charges and conviction,” Vallelong added.

According to the Post, Duran testified in his own defense, claiming he threw the cooler to protect fellow officers.

“I thought he was going to kill my guys,” Duran said during the three-week trial.

Judge Mitchell rejected that argument, ruling Duran was not justified in using deadly force.

“After consideration of all evidence, the people proved beyond all reasonable doubt that this defendant was not justified,” the judge said.

Duran joined the NYPD in 2010 and has been recognized by the department dozens of times for what it deems excellent and meritorious police service, according to a police personnel database. Duran’s disciplinary record includes a substantiated complaint in 2022 for abusing his authority during a stop, according to the city’s Civilian Complaint Review Board.

Los Angeles city council member Nithya Raman enters mayoral race | Los Angeles

0

Los Angeles city council member Nithya Raman formally entered the race for mayor on Saturday, unveiling her campaign during a press conference.

Representing areas that stretch from the San Fernando Valley to Silver Lake, Raman declared her candidacy just hours before the filing deadline. She now joins a field that includes former reality television personality Spencer Pratt, Housing Now California deputy director Rae Huang, veteran city engineer Asaad Alnajjar and the incumbent mayor, Karen Bass.

During her remarks, Raman said she is concerned that the city “is no longer a place of opportunity”.

“Los Angeles is at a breaking point, and people feel it in the most basic ways,” she said. “Housing costs are forcing families out of the city, a homelessness system that lacks clear ownership and accountability is leaving people stuck in crisis while the city cycles from emergency to emergency. Too many people don’t feel safe walking down their own blocks at night, even as crime comes down because broken street lights stay broken and the city can’t seem to manage the basics.”

She continued: “And while everyone agrees we need more housing, the city still struggles to lead with urgency, building too little too slowly while working families get priced out over and over again.”

Raman also argued that Los Angeles needs a mayor who will hold city departments accountable, plan ahead for emergencies, and push for increased housing supply and affordability. During her tenure on the city council, she has focused on rent stabilization and efforts to address homelessness.

Her entry into the race sets up what could be a strong challenge to Bass, who is running for a second four-year term. The incumbent has faced scrutiny recently over her handling of the historic wildfires that burned parts of LA early last year.

Raman has previously been a close ally of Bass and was the first council member elected with backing from the Democratic Socialists of America, which achieved a major win last fall with the election of New York City’s new mayor, Zohran Mamdani.

At the same time, she has established strong connections with leaders in the Yimby movement, which has advocated for expanding housing production through measures such as upzoning single-family neighborhoods and revising Measure ULA, the so-called mansion tax applied to property sales of $5.3m or more.

Raman’s last-minute decision to run comes at the end of what has been one of the most volatile mayoral filing periods in Los Angeles in decades. Her announcement followed closely after LA county supervisor Lindsey Horvath opted not to enter the race, choosing instead to focus on her bid for a second term on the board of supervisors.

Horvath made her decision public a day before the deadline to file a declaration of intent for the 2 June primary, becoming the third potential contender in two days to rule out a challenge to Bass.

Earlier in the week, former Los Angeles unified school district superintendent Austin Beutner and billionaire developer Rick Caruso also announced that they would not be running.

The mayoral race comes as ongoing immigration raids by the Trump administration have agitated the city, making it an issue at the forefront of voters’ minds. Bass has described the raids as “an attack from our own federal government” and an affront to cities and people across the US.

AI analysis casts doubt on Van Eyck paintings in Italian and US museums | Art

0

An analysis of two paintings in museums in the US and Italy by the 15th-century Flemish artist Jan van Eyck has raised a profound question: what if neither were by Van Eyck?

Saint Francis of Assisi Receiving the Stigmata, the name given to near-identical unsigned paintings hanging in the Philadelphia Museum of Art and the Royal Museums of Turin, represent two of the small number of surviving works by one of western art’s greatest masters, revered for his naturalistic portraits and religious subjects.

The only problem is that neither version may actually be by his hand.

Scientific tests involving artificial intelligence on the paintings conducted by Art Recognition, a Swiss company that collaborates on research with Tilburg University in the Netherlands, has been unable to detect any of Van Eyck’s brushstrokes. It has concluded that the Philadelphia picture was “91% negative” and that the Turin version was “86% negative”.

Till-Holger Borchert, one of the leading Van Eyck scholars and director of the Suermondt-Ludwig-Museum in Aachen, said the Van Eyck findings supported scholars who had suggested that both versions were studio paintings – produced in the artist’s workshop but not necessarily by him.

He said that, although he was “surprised” by the analysis, it posed further questions that needed to be explored.

Dr Carina Popovici, Art Recognition’s chief executive, said that such high negative percentages for the paintings were particularly dramatic. In contrast, an analysis of another Van Eyck – The Arnolfini Portrait, which is among the most popular paintings in the National Gallery in London – said it was 89% likely to be authentic.

She said she had also been taken aback by the findings: “I expected that, if one painting was negative, the other would be positive. But no, both came out negative.”

She told the Guardian: “I’m guessing that the Philadelphia and Turin museums won’t be happy. It’s not good news on these paintings.” The Philadelphia and Turin museums have been contacted for comment. Critics have contended that a paintings’ condition and later restorations may affect such AI-based brushstroke analysis.

Dr Noah Charney, an art historian who discussed the initial Philadelphia painting’s findings on his podcast, described Art Recognition’s previous analyses as “remarkably accurate” and said that the negative result for both pictures had been so surprising that deeper tests had been conducted to confirm the results.

He said he had expected that the Turin picture would be confirmed as by Van Eyck, and that the Philadelphia version would emerge as a copy, whether from the artist’s workshop or later.

“The negative results suggest that both of these pictures are studio works, which may mean that we have a lost original that was more fully by Van Eyck’s hand than these two,” he said.

“If a work comes out of Van Eyck’s studio, it doesn’t necessarily mean that he actually physically painted the surface level of all aspects of it,” he said on his podcast. “That’s a misconception that people get from this 19th-century idea of the lone artist in a garret in Paris drinking absinthe, smoking cigarettes, wearing a beret and doing every aspect of the work themselves.”

Van Eyck is regarded as one of the pioneers of oil painting. “[Van Eyck] didn’t invent oil painting, but he perfected it so thoroughly that everyone else seemed to be working in his shadow for centuries,” Charney said. “His surfaces shimmer with light in detail so fine you need a magnifying glass to take it all in. Every stone, hair, reflection, and a glint seems to be rendered with a kind of supernatural clarity.

“That ability to make the everyday luminous is why many consider him not only a great painter, but one of the great observers of reality in all of western art. And yet for all his fame, Van Eyck’s surviving oeuvre is small: fewer than 20 paintings are universally accepted as by his own hand.”

The National Gallery in London is preparing to stage an exhibition of Van Eyck portraits in November.

Among previous analyses, Art Recognition detected up to 40 fake paintings that were being offered on eBay in 2024. It also concluded in 2021 that Rubens’ Samson and Delilah in the National Gallery was “91% negative”, supporting critics who have long doubted that it was painted by the 17th-century Flemish master.

Supermodel Paulina Porizkova details alleged harassment in fashion world

0

NEWYou can now listen to Fox News articles!

Paulina Porizkova is exposing some dark secrets of the high-fashion world, claiming that her rise to superstardom was paved with uncomfortable encounters.

The Sports Illustrated Swimsuit legend, now 60, detailed the normalization of sexual harassment she allegedly faced as a teenager, saying the very people tasked with managing her career often sent her into compromising situations.

“I started modeling at 15 in Paris on a summer break from school,” Porizkova shared in a video clip posted to Instagram. “And every day I was sent on four to 10 so-called ‘go-and-sees.’ You go, and they see — all over the city — by myself, with no knowledge of the language or the city.”

The Czechoslovakia-born model explained that while some meetings were professional, many others were far from it.

“Sometimes the people I was seeing were well-dressed and in offices, and sometimes they were middle-aged guys in messy apartments who just wanted to take a few casual photos of me — you know, preferably topless,” she said. “I’ve lost count of the amount of men in open bathrobes who greeted me in their hotel rooms or apartments where I have been sent by an agency or clients.”

Porizkova, who made history in 1984 as the first Central European woman to land a Sports Illustrated Swimsuit cover, noted that the advances were not limited to messy apartments.

She recalled well-dressed older men frequently inviting her to parties, yachts and tropical villas.

For years, the supermodel believed these encounters were simply part of the paycheck.

“I took it all for granted,” Porizkova admitted. “That my job was to take my clothes off, put my clothes back on, and then learn how to creatively fend off horny men so that you don’t offend them and lose a job.”

“I looked at my girlfriend and said, ‘That’s sexual harassment? I thought that was compliments,’” she recalled.

Reflecting on her vulnerability as a child in a high-stakes industry, the “No Filter: The Good, the Bad, and the Beautiful” author emphasized how easily children can be manipulated by those in power.

“When you take a child, and you put them in any situation, that child will adapt. If an adult tells you that this is how it’s supposed to be, well, then who are you, the child, to protest? And this makes the child the easiest target,” she said. “And if you’re unsure of how old exactly a child is to be a child, well, then you either don’t have one or you don’t have the humanity to remember being one.”

An important meeting of the top leadership of Israel and America has been scheduled amid increasing tension over Iran’s nuclear program. Israel has said that Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu will meet US President Trump in Washington on Wednesday. The main issue of the meeting will be the ongoing US talks with Iran and the security concerns related to it. This meeting is being considered very important amid the fear of regional conflict.

According to the Israeli Prime Minister’s Office, Netanyahu believes that any talks with Iran should include the condition of stopping the ballistic missile program and dismantling Iran-backed regional networks. The statement said that limited talks on the nuclear program alone would not be enough. Israel wants the agreement to be accompanied by a comprehensive security framework.

US-Iran indirect talks in Oman
Indirect talks between America and Iran took place in Oman on Friday. This conversation was to decide the future direction regarding Iran’s nuclear program. Initial indications suggested that the talks had returned to the starting point. President Trump described the talks as very good and said that there are plans to hold talks again next week. The US side was represented by Special Envoy for Middle East Steve Witkoff and Trump’s son-in-law Jared Kushner.

America is also maintaining military pressure
Trump has already said that if necessary, force can be used to put pressure on Iran for a nuclear deal. Earlier, America had deployed several warships in the area including the aircraft carrier USS Abraham Lincoln. The deployment came amid heightened tensions in Iran following a crackdown on protests. Gulf countries fear that any attack could spark a wider regional war.

Military commander also involved in the talks process
For the first time, America also included its top military commander of the West Asia region in the talks process related to Iran. Central Command chief Admiral Brad Cooper arrived aboard the USS Abraham Lincoln after the talks. Witkoff and Kushner were also present with him. This indicates that military preparations are also being kept parallel with diplomatic talks.

Iran said- talks only on nuclear issue
Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said that nuclear talks should be held in a calm atmosphere and without threats. He made it clear that Iran will discuss only on its nuclear program. This round of talks is over and the diplomats are returning to their respective countries. A proposal also emerged that Iran stop enrichment for three years, send out highly enriched uranium and promise not to start using ballistic missiles, but official agreement on this is not clear.
