UNC fans storm court too early against Duke, evacuate for final 0.4 seconds

Chapel Hill was buzzing just a bit too early Saturday night.

The 14th-ranked Tar Heels hit a 3-pointer in the closing seconds that everyone thought was a walk-off buzzer-beater over No. 4 Duke.

In their defense, the horn sounded, and the clock showed zeroes, so legions of Tar Heel blue stormed the court. Seth Trimble even did Stephen Curry’s “go to sleep” celebration after hitting nothing but net.

However, officials reviewed the replay and decided to put 0.4 seconds back on the clock.

Hundreds of fans then had to clear the court, which had to be wiped down after food and drinks spilled everywhere.

Thankfully for them, the original court storm was not a jinx. Duke couldn’t handle the inbound pass, sealing a 71-68 victory for North Carolina.

It was UNC’s largest comeback win over Duke since 2001 after trailing by 13 points. The Tar Heels went on a 9-0 run over the final 2:25 and did not lead at any point until the final score.

RICK PITINO TO ST. JOHN’S STAR ZUBY EJIOFOR: ‘YOU’RE GOING TO MAKE ME RETIRE’

House of Pain’s classic “Jump Around” then played over the loudspeaker after the second court storm, and the place continued to go berserk.

For what it’s worth, UNC will be fined at least $50,000 for breaking ACC court-storming rules. The $50,000 fine is for a first offense, and that amount doubles after a school’s second. Technically, fans stormed the court twice.

It was UNC’s first win over Duke since March 9, 2024, after Duke swept all three games last year, including the ACC tournament. The loss was just the second of Duke’s season, while UNC improved to 19-4.

Polls open in Thailand with three main parties vying for power | Politics News

0

No single party is expected to secure a clear majority in Sunday’s vote, raising the spectre of political instability.

Polls have opened in Thailand in a closely watched general election, with progressive reformers, military-backed conservatives and populist forces vying for control.

Polling stations opened at 8am local time (01:00 GMT) on Sunday and were set to close at 5pm (10:00 GMT).

More than 2.2 million voters had already cast ballots during an early voting period that began February 1, according to the Election Commission.

The battle for support from Thailand’s 53 million registered voters comes against a backdrop of slow economic growth and heightened nationalist sentiment.

While more than 50 parties are contesting the polls, only three — the People’s Party, Bhumjaithai, and Pheu Thai — have the nationwide organisation and popularity to gain a winning mandate.

With 500 parliamentary seats at stake and surveys consistently showing no party likely to win an outright majority, coalition negotiations appear inevitable. A simple majority of elected lawmakers will select the next prime minister.

The progressive People’s Party, led by Natthaphong Ruengpanyawut, is favoured to win the most seats. But the party’s reformist platform – which include promises to curb the influence of the military and the courts and breaking up economic polices – remain unpalatable to its rivals, who may freeze it out by joining forces to form a government.

The party is the successor to the Move Forward Party, which won the most House seats in 2023, but was blocked from power by a military appointed Senate and later dissolved by the Constitutional Court over its call to reform Thailand’s strict royal insult laws.

The Bhumjaithai, headed by caretaker Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul, is seen as the main defender and preferred choice of the royalist-military establishment.

Anutin has been prime minister only since last September, after serving in the Cabinet of former Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra, who was forced out of office for an ethics violation regarding mishandling relations with Cambodia. He dissolved parliament in December to call a new election after he was threatened with a no-confidence vote.

Anutin has centred his campaign on economic stimulus and national security, tapping into nationalist fervour stroked by deadly border clashes with neighbouring Cambodia.

The third major contender, Pheu Thai, represents the latest incarnation of political movements backed by jailed former Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra, and trades on the populist parties of the Thai Rak Thai party, which held power from 2001 until 2006, when it was ousted by a military coup.

The party has campaigned on economic revival and populist pledges like cash handouts, nominating Thaksin’s nephew, Yodchanan Wongsawat, as its lead candidate for prime minister.

Sunday’s voting also includes a referendum asking voters whether Thailand should replace its 2017 military-drafted constitution.

Pro-democracy groups view a new charter as a critical step toward reducing the influence of unelected institutions such as the military and judiciary, while conservatives warn that it could cause instability.

Us: ‘Epstein was trying to contact several Russian officials, including Putin’, Justice Department documents claim – Us Justice Dept New Documents Claim Epstein Was Trying To Contact Several Russian Officials, Including Putin

0

This is from June 2018. Then Russia’s ambassador to the United Nations, Vitaly Churkin, died suddenly. Sex offender Jeffrey Epstein previously visited them frequently in New York and offered to help Churkin’s son Maxim get a job at a company in New York. This claim has been made in new documents released by the US Justice Department.

Now Epstein wanted to talk to Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov. On June 24, 2018, Epstein emailed Norwegian leader Thorbjorn Jagland and wrote that you can tell Putin that Lavrov can talk to me, because earlier this work used to be done by Vitaly Churkin, but now he is dead. Jagland responded that he would meet with Lavrov’s assistant the following Monday and make this suggestion.

Epstein responded, ‘Churkin was very good. After our conversation he understood Trump. There is no complication in this. They should see that they have achieved something, that’s all.

What’s in the new documents released?
It was previously revealed that Epstein was interested in finding models from Russia and other parts of Eastern Europe. Now recently released documents show that he tried several times to meet or talk to senior Russian officials, including Putin. Newly released documents have generated new speculation over his intentions. These new documents show Epstein’s conversations with international leaders and Russian officials.

What did Poland’s Prime Minister Tusk say?
Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk told a cabinet meeting this week that his country would investigate Epstein’s possible ties to Russian intelligence agencies. “More leads, more information and more commentary in the global media add to the suspicion that this unprecedented child sexual abuse scandal was carried out with the cooperation of Russian intelligence services,” Tusk said.

Tusk said, I do not need to tell you how serious the possible participation in this operation by Russian intelligence agencies could be for the security of Poland. This only means that they may have sensitive information against many leaders active even today.

What did the Kremlin say?
The Kremlin rejected claims that Epstein was a spy for Russia. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said speculation that Epstein was under the control of Russia’s intelligence agencies could be taken either way. But it should not be taken seriously. Peskov also said that journalists should not waste their time investigating allegations of Epstein’s ties to Russian intelligence agencies.

Savannah Guthrie tells mother’s potential kidnappers ‘we will pay’ in video plea for her return | US News

0

US TV news host Savannah Guthrie has told the potential kidnappers of her 84-year-old mother that her family “will pay” for her safe return.

Nancy Guthrie was last seen at her own home near Tucson, Arizona, on the evening of 31 January, and was reported missing the next day after she did not turn up at church.

Law enforcement officials have concluded that she was kidnapped, but the Pima County Sheriff’s Department said it has not identified any suspects or people of interest in the case.

On Saturday, a week after her mother’s disappearance, the NBC News Today co-anchor posted a video on Instagram where she urged those believed to be holding Ms Guthrie to return her.

“We received your message and we understand,” she said, joined by her siblings Cameron and Annie. “We beg you now to return our mother to us, so that we can celebrate with her.”

“This is the only way we will have peace,” she added. “This is very valuable to us, and we will pay.”

Savannah Guthrie was referring to a message sent to the Tucson-based television station KOLD on Friday, according to Kevin Smith, a spokesperson for the FBI office in Phoenix.

KOLD said it received an email related to the Guthrie case on social media that day but declined to share details about its contents as the FBI conducted its review.

The station was one of several news outlets, including Sky’s US partner network NBC News, that received alleged ransom letters during the week.

NBC News confirmed it had reviewed a copy of the note, however, no law enforcement agency has so far substantiated it.

Sky’s US correspondent Martha Kelner said that “this is obviously a huge mystery still”, noting that there are “no suspects and no persons of interest in this case”.

While it’s still unclear who the sender is, she added it appears they “used the same secure server to hide their IP address” and that the new note “the senders believe will indicate to investigators that they are the same person or people that sent the original note”.

It comes after it emerged that police investigating Ms Guthrie’s disappearance were searching for a vehicle or vehicles that may be connected to her case.

A spokesperson for the convenience store chain Circle K told NBC News on Friday that officers visited one of their stores after “receiving a tip regarding a vehicle of interest, and our team has provided them access to the store’s surveillance video”.

Sky News has contacted the Pima County Sheriff’s Department for comment.

State of Florida removes 5,195 invasive iguanas during 2-day cold snap event

NEWYou can now listen to Fox News articles!

More than 5,000 invasive green iguanas in Florida were removed during the state’s two-day exemption that allowed residents and visitors to capture the cold-stunned reptiles without a permit, according to the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC).

The state wildlife agency announced this week that 5,195 cold-stunned iguanas were collected and brought to four designated FWC offices on Feb. 1 and Feb. 2 during South Florida’s period of record-setting cold temperatures.

“The removal of over 5,000 of these nonnative lizards in such a short time span was only possible thanks to the coordinated efforts of many staff members in multiple FWC divisions and offices, our partners and, of course, the many residents that took the time to collect and turn in cold-stunned iguanas from their properties,” Roger Young, FWC’s executive director said at a Feb. 4 meeting in Tallahassee.

Special regulations under an executive order allowed people to remove live, cold-stunned iguanas from the wild without a permit for two days only, the FWC said in a news release.

Of the 5,195 iguanas collected, 3,882 of them were amassed at the FWC’s office in Sunrise, about 13 miles west of Fort Lauderdale, the FWC said.

Another 1,075 were collected at the FWC’s location in Tequesta, some 24 miles north of West Palm Beach.

There were 215 iguanas collected at the drop-off location in the Florida Keys and 23 nabbed in Fort Myers on the Gulf Coast.

FWC staff worked to coordinate the transfer of iguanas collected to permit holders, including for sale outside the state. Any of the reptiles that couldn’t be transferred to permit holders were humanely killed by trained staff, according to the FWC.

Green iguanas are a prohibited species in the Sunshine State because of their “negative impacts on Florida’s environment and economy,” Young said.

Because they’re an invasive species in Florida, iguanas can be humanely killed on a person’s property and are not protected except by the state’s anti-cruelty laws.

“If you encounter a cold-stunned green iguana, you should never bring it into your home or building to warm up,” according to the FWC’s news release.

When temperatures dip, iguanas lose the ability to move their muscles.

“Iguanas can recover from cold-stunning more quickly than you may expect — and, once recovered, can act defensively, with long tails that whip and sharp teeth and claws.”

Low temperatures in Miami reached 35 degrees on Feb. 1, while lows in West Palm Beach hit 30 degrees — breaking records for that date, set in 1909, according to National Weather Service data.

Green iguanas were first reported in South Florida in the 1960s, according to the FWC.

When temperatures dip, they lose the ability to move their muscles and have been known to fall from trees, appearing dead. But they’re very much alive and in a state of paralysis, or torpor.

Many Floridians took advantage of the region’s rare winter freeze to round up the pesky reptiles that can damage people’s properties and “leave droppings on docks, moored boats, seawalls, porches, decks, pool platforms and inside swimming pools.”

“In cleared habitats such as canal banks and vacant lots, green iguanas reside in burrows, culverts, drainage pipes and rock or debris piles,” according to the FWC.

“South Florida’s extensive man-made canals serve as ideal dispersal corridors to further allow iguanas to colonize new areas.”

The FWC is no longer accepting live iguanas from the public, the organization said.

Japan heads to polls as Takaichi seeks mandate for conservative agenda | Elections News

0

Voters in Japan are casting their ballots in a parliamentary election expected to deliver a resounding victory for Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi’s conservative coalition.

The snap vote on Sunday comes as Takaichi seeks a new mandate to push through an ambitious agenda, including increased defence spending and tougher immigration measures.

list of 4 itemsend of list

The coalition of Takaichi’s Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) and the Japan Innovation Party, known as Ishin, could win more than 300 of the 465 seats in the lower house of parliament, according to multiple opinion polls.

The figure would mark a substantial gain from the 233 it is defending.

The opposition, despite the formation of a new centrist alliance and a rising far-right, is seen as too splintered to be a real challenger.

Takaichi, 64, is Japan’s first female prime minister and took office in October after being selected as the LDP’s leader. The ultraconservative politician has pledged to “work, work, work” and her style – seen as both playful and tough – has resonated with younger voters.

She has said she will step down if the LDP fails to win a majority.

The cost of living has taken centre stage in Takaichi’s campaign. The issue is voters’ main concern, with prices rising while real wage growth lags behind inflation, leaving households worse off.

Japan also faces longstanding problems with sluggish economic growth. The economy expanded just 1.1 percent last year and is on track to grow by only 0.7 percent in 2026, according to the International Monetary Fund.

Takaichi has promised to suspend the 8 percent sales tax on food for two years to help households cope with rising prices.

The pledge follows the approval last year of Japan’s largest stimulus package since the COVID-19 pandemic, a 21.3 trillion yen ($136bn) injection into the economy heavily focused on cost-of-living relief measures, including energy bill subsidies, cash handouts and food vouchers.

Takaichi has pledged to revise security and defence policies by December to bolster Japan’s offensive military capabilities, lifting a ban on weapons exports and moving further away from the country’s post-war pacifist principles.

Takaichi has generated a social media-led wave, mostly among younger voters, with a phenomenon dubbed “sanakatsu” for products she uses, such as her handbag and the pink pen she writes with in parliament.

In a recent opinion poll, respondents under 30 favoured her by more than 90 percent. This young cohort, however, ‌is less likely to vote than the older generations that have long been the bedrock of LDP support.

Al Jazeera’s Patrick Fok, reporting from Tokyo, said Takaichi is hoping to capitalise on her “tremendous popularity” and secure a landslide victory for her coalition.

“That result – if indeed that’s how it turns out – will mark a remarkable turnaround really for the LDP. Months ago, it was a party in disarray. It had lost its parliamentary majority and was embroiled in a slush fund scandal. So, this turnaround has very much been engineered by Takaichi and what some describe as an almost cult-like popularity,” Fok said.

Sunday’s vote comes amid record snowfall in parts of the country. With up to 70cm (27.5 inches) of snow forecast in northern and eastern regions, some voters will have to battle blizzards to cast their ballots.

The vote is only the third post-war election held in February, with polls typically called during milder months.

Fok said the heavy snowfall could affect voter turnout, but “there’s no suggestion that’s going to impact the outcome of the election”.

“A lot of people feel that the opposition parties are not offering anything substantially different. And perhaps they feel that Takaichi’s economic agenda will boost the country in the long term. She has a growth oriented strategy. She wants to develop sectors like AI, and semi conductors, and accelerate defence spending. Voters are perhaps betting on that unlocking the keys to stagnant wage growth in this country, and in turn counter rising inflation that they are experiencing here,” he added.

Voters on Sunday will select lawmakers in 289 single-seat constituencies, with the remainder decided by proportional representation votes for parties. Polls close at 8pm local time (11:00 GMT), when broadcasters are expected to issue projections based on exit polls.

Fire-juggling unicyclist stops Colorado traffic at busy intersection

NEWYou can now listen to Fox News articles!

Traffic was stopped, but not for construction.

Police in Commerce City, Colorado, say they were just as surprised as motorists this week after a fire-juggling unicyclist turned a busy intersection into an impromptu street performance — a moment the department joked was “certainly not on our Bingo card.”

The Commerce City Police Department shared drone footage and photos of the unusual scene after receiving multiple calls from drivers who encountered the man juggling flaming torches while riding a unicycle in traffic near U.S. 85 and 60th Avenue.

“This post was certainly not on our Bingo card, yet here we are,” the department wrote in a social media post. “The intersection of U.S.-85 and 60th isn’t exactly the Las Vegas Strip… or is it?”

According to police, the performer rode through the median and crosswalk while traffic waited at the light, drawing both attention and concern from motorists.

“We got numerous calls the other day when drivers were treated to a little stoplight entertainment courtesy of this fire-juggling unicyclist,” police said.

Officers captured the scene using a drone, which showed the man balancing on the unicycle as flames flickered just feet from passing vehicles. While acknowledging the skill involved, saying it was “quite good,” police made clear the stunt crossed a legal line.

“Our drone caught his act, which was both quite good and quite illegal,” the department wrote, citing trespassing in the median and impeding traffic by failing to clear the crosswalk in time.

Police said they regularly conduct enforcement efforts at the intersection to ensure pedestrians selling wares or services are not interfering with traffic, noting that reports like this are rare.

“We don’t often get reports like this anymore… well to be fair… we have NEVER gotten a report quite like this one,” the post said.

The department ended its message on a lighthearted note, while still reminding the public that juggling fire in traffic is not encouraged.

“So let’s all take a moment to appreciate this man’s talents,” police wrote, before adding: “Then all agree that we aren’t going to do stuff like this. Mmkay?”

Coalition to reunite after Sussan Ley brokers deal with David Littleproud to end second split | Coalition

0

The Coalition will reunite after Sussan Ley brokered a deal with David Littleproud to bring the Liberals and Nationals back together.

The opposition leader and the Nationals leader will announce the peace deal at a joint press conference in Canberra at 12.30pm on Sunday, reforming the Coalition less than three weeks after a rift over Labor’s hate speech laws split the parties for the second time in eight months.

Ley had given the Nationals until this Monday to reunite with the Liberals before she proceeded with a permanent Liberal-only frontbench that would have cemented the break-up.

Sign up: AU Breaking News email

A Liberal source familiar with the negotiations said the two parties would agree to reunite immediately before parliament’s resumption on Monday.

But all of the former Nationals frontbenchers would be suspended from the shadow ministry until March.

Littleproud and the Nationals deputy leader, Kevin Hogan, would still attend shadow cabinet and other senior leadership meetings during the period, even though neither would technically hold frontbench positions.

The deal represents a compromise from both leaders, whose standing among their colleagues has been damaged in the messy saga.

Ley last week offered to reunite with the Nationals but only if the three Nationals senators who crossed the floor on Labor’s hate speech laws – Bridget McKenzie, Susan McDonald and Ross Cadell – served a six-month suspension on the backbench.

But Littleproud, who initially said the Coalition was “untenable” under Ley, was adamant the Nationals had done nothing wrong and therefore shouldn’t be punished.

The Nationals’ position softened late last week, with the party agreeing that all former frontbenchers, not just the three senators, would accept a short suspension.

However, the Nationals wanted to remain apart from the Liberals for the duration of that period.

At the time, multiple Liberal sources, speaking on the condition of anonymity, said the Nationals’ proposal was not being treated as a serious offer and was likely to be rejected unless revised.

The two leaders held further talks on Friday and Saturday to salvage a deal, with Ley briefing the Liberal leadership team about her decision on Saturday night.

Appearing on Nine’s Weekend Today on Sunday morning, Littleproud would not pre-empt an announcement but was hopeful “in the near future, there is a Coalition”.

“Because that’s the only way to bring Anthony Albanese down,” he said.

The prospect of reuniting the Coalition has divided the Liberals and heaped further pressure on Ley as she fights to retain her leadership.

The former Liberal prime minister John Howard and senior conservatives publicly intervened to advocate for a reconciliation, while others – including many moderates – were comfortable with a period of time apart from the Nationals.

The formation of an all-Liberal frontbench would have allowed Ley to promote six MPs to shadow cabinet and a further two to the shadow ministry.

The appointments could have helped bolster her internal positions as conservative rival Angus Taylor weighs a leadership challenge as soon as next week.

In his clearest public statement about his intentions, Taylor said on Friday that he still harboured leadership ambitions but insisted there was “no plan” for a spill next week.

“I’m not going to say to you and your listeners that I don’t have and haven’t had leadership ambitions. I clearly have had [them]. You know, that’s why I ran for the leadership last time around,” he told 2GB.
