Coalition to reunite after Sussan Ley brokers deal with David Littleproud to end second split | Coalition

0

The Coalition will reunite after Sussan Ley brokered a deal with David Littleproud to bring the Liberals and Nationals back together.

The opposition leader and the Nationals leader will announce the peace deal at a joint press conference in Canberra at 12.30pm on Sunday, reforming the Coalition less than three weeks after a rift over Labor’s hate speech laws split the parties for the second time in eight months.

Ley had given the Nationals until this Monday to reunite with the Liberals before she proceeded with a permanent Liberal-only frontbench that would have cemented the break-up.

A Liberal source familiar with the negotiations said the two parties would agree to reunite immediately before parliament’s resumption on Monday.

But all of the former Nationals frontbenchers would be suspended from the shadow ministry until March.

Littleproud and the Nationals deputy leader, Kevin Hogan, would still attend shadow cabinet and other senior leadership meetings during the period, even though neither would technically hold frontbench positions.

The deal represents a compromise from both leaders, whose standing among their colleagues has been damaged in the messy saga.

Ley last week offered to reunite with the Nationals but only if the three Nationals senators who crossed the floor on Labor’s hate speech laws – Bridget McKenzie, Susan McDonald and Ross Cadell – served a six-month suspension on the backbench.

But Littleproud, who initially said the Coalition was “untenable” under Ley, was adamant the Nationals had done nothing wrong and therefore shouldn’t be punished.

The Nationals’ position softened late last week, with the party agreeing that all former frontbenchers, not just the three senators, would accept a short suspension.

However, the Nationals wanted to remain apart from the Liberals for the duration of that period.

At the time, multiple Liberal sources, speaking on the condition of anonymity, said the Nationals’ proposal was not being treated as a serious offer and was likely to be rejected unless revised.

The two leaders held further talks on Friday and Saturday to salvage a deal, with Ley briefing the Liberal leadership team about her decision on Saturday night.

Appearing on Nine’s Weekend Today on Sunday morning, Littleproud would not pre-empt an announcement but was hopeful “in the near future, there is a Coalition”.

“Because that’s the only way to bring Anthony Albanese down,” he said.

The prospect of reuniting the Coalition has divided the Liberals and heaped further pressure on Ley as she fights to retain her leadership.

The former Liberal prime minister John Howard and senior conservatives publicly intervened to advocate for a reconciliation, while others – including many moderates – were comfortable with a period of time apart from the Nationals.

The formation of an all-Liberal frontbench would have allowed Ley to promote six MPs to shadow cabinet and a further two to the shadow ministry.

The appointments could have helped bolster her internal positions as conservative rival Angus Taylor weighs a leadership challenge as soon as next week.

In his clearest public statement about his intentions, Taylor said on Friday that he still harboured leadership ambitions but insisted there was “no plan” for a spill next week.

“I’m not going to say to you and your listeners that I don’t have and haven’t had leadership ambitions. I clearly have had [them]. You know, that’s why I ran for the leadership last time around,” he told 2GB.

DNI Tulsi Gabbard denies wrongdoing over classified whistleblower complaint

0

NEWYou can now listen to Fox News articles!

Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard denied any wrongdoing on Saturday as Democrats question why a whistleblower complaint filed against her last May took nearly a year before it was referred to Congress.

“[Virginia Democrat] Senator Mark Warner and his friends in the Propaganda Media have repeatedly lied to the American people that I or the ODNI ‘hid’ a whistleblower complaint in a safe for eight months,” Gabbard wrote in a lengthy X post on Saturday. “This is a blatant lie.”

She continued, “I am not now, nor have I ever been, in possession or control of the Whistleblower’s complaint, so I obviously could not have ‘hidden’ it in a safe. Biden-era IC Inspector General Tamara Johnson was in possession of and responsible for securing the complaint for months.”

The highly classified complaint by a U.S. intelligence official alleging wrongdoing on the part of Gabbard was filed eight months ago with the intelligence community’s watchdog office and was first reported on by the Wall Street Journal.

The complaint has been locked in a safe since its filing, according to the Journal, with one U.S. official telling the newspaper that the disclosure of its contents could cause “grave damage to national security.”

The whistleblower’s lawyer has accused Gabbard’s office of slow-walking the complaint, which her office has denied, calling it “baseless and politically motivated.”

Meanwhile, Democrats are also questioning why it took her office so long to hand the complaint over to Congress.

TRUMP CONFIRMS WHAT TULSI GABBARD WAS DOING AT GEORGIA ELECTION CENTER

“The law is clear,” Warner, the senior Democrat on the Senate Intelligence Committee, said Thursday, according to NPR, adding that the complaint was required to be sent to Congress within 21 days of its filing. “I think it was an effort to try to bury this whistleblower complaint.”

Neither the contents of the complaint nor the allegations against Gabbard have been revealed.

Gabbard wrote on Saturday that the first time she saw the complaint was “when I had to review it to provide guidance on how it should be securely shared with Congress.”

TRUMP CLAIMS DNI TULSI GABBARD WAS AT GEORGIA ELECTION HUB SEARCH BECAUSE AG PAM BONDI WANTED HER THERE

“As Vice Chair of the Senate Intelligence Committee, Senator Warner knows very well that whistleblower complaints that contain highly classified and compartmented intelligence—even if they contain baseless allegations like this one—must be secured in a safe, which the Biden-era Inspector General Tamara Johnson did and her successor, Inspector General Chris Fox, continued to do,” she continued. “After IC Inspector General Fox hand-delivered the complaint to the Gang of 8, the complaint was returned to a safe where it remains, consistent with any information of such sensitivity.”

She claimed that either “Warner knows these facts and is intentionally lying to the American people, or he doesn’t have a clue how these things work and is therefore not qualified to be in the U.S. Senate.”

Gabbard further wrote that “When a complaint is not found to be credible, there is no timeline under the law for the provision of security guidance. The ‘21 day’ requirement that Senator Warner alleges I did not comply with, only applies when a complaint is determined by the Inspector General to be both urgent AND apparently credible. That was NOT the case here.”

An inspector general representative said that it had determined some of the allegations in the complaint against Gabbard weren’t credible, while it hasn’t made a determination on others, according to the Journal.

Gabbard said she was made aware that she needed to provide security guidance on the complaint by IC Inspector General Chris Fox on Dec. 4, “which he detailed in his letter to Congress.”

Afterward, she said she “took immediate action to provide the security guidance to the Intelligence Community Inspector General, who then shared the complaint and referenced intelligence with relevant members of Congress last week.”

In closing her post, Gabbard once again accused Warner of spreading “lies and baseless accusations over the months for political gain,” which she said “undermines our national security and is a disservice to the American people and the Intelligence Community.”

Warner’s office told Fox News Digital Gabbard’s post was an “inaccurate attack that’s entirely on brand for someone who has already and repeatedly proven she’s unqualified to serve as DNI.”

Republicans on the House and Senate intelligence committees have backed up Gabbard, with Sen. Tom Cotton, R-Ark., writing on X on Thursday: “I have reviewed this ‘whistleblower’ complaint and the inspector general handling of it. I agree with both inspectors general who have evaluated the matter: the complaint is not credible and the inspectors general and the DNI took the necessary steps to ensure the material has handled and transmitted appropriately in accordance with law.”

He addded, “To be frank, it seems like just another effort by the president’s critics in and out of government to undermine policies that they don’t like; it’s definitely not credible allegations of waste, fraud, or abuse.”

Gabbard’s office did not immediately respond to Fox News Digital’s request for comment.

‘No end in sight’ to Britain’s wet weather as dozens of flood warnings issued | UK weather

0

The unrelenting rain is expected to continue on Sunday and into next week with dozens of flood warnings in place across Great Britain.

The Environment Agency (EA) has issued 85 warnings for England, meaning flooding is expected, mainly concentrated in the south-west and Midlands.

A further 245 flood alerts are in place, meaning flooding is possible, from North Yorkshire to Cornwall and from the Welsh borders to Norfolk.

Natural Resources Wales has another 11 flood alerts in place while Scotland has one flood warning and five flood alerts.

The Met Office said there will be further showers on Sunday, particularly in the west, while persistent rain and drizzle will affect parts of Scotland.

The outlook for Monday to Wednesday is cloudy with spells of torrential rain across the UK though with occasional drier interludes.

It has rained every day for the last 37 days in the UK, while Aberdeen has had zero hours of sunshine since 21 January and Sheffield has had no hours of sunshine so far this month, Sky News reported.

In only the first three days of this month, the south-east received nearly a third of its average February rainfall.

Dan Stroud, operational meteorologist with the Met Office, said: “Unfortunately, there’s no end in sight.”

Newcastle’s jumps announced its meeting on Sunday has been abandoned “due to the track being waterlogged with some false patches and no prospect of sufficient improvement in the next 24 hours” following “13mm of rain in the last 24 hours and 56mm rain in the past week”.

Rain has fallen every day of 2026 in the south-west and south Wales, the Met Office announced earlier this week.

Both regions have faced 50% more rainfall than usual for January, the forecaster said.

The UK’s wettest February on record was in 2020 with 213.7mm of rainfall which included Storm Ciara and Storm Dennis.

Washington Post CEO Will Lewis steps down, days after a third of staff made redundant | Money News

0

The chief executive and publisher of the Washington Post has stepped down, just days after a third of the paper’s staff were made redundant.

In an email sent to staff, Will Lewis said that “during my tenure, difficult decisions have been taken in order to ensure ‍the sustainable future of The Post” – seemingly referencing this week’s layoffs – “so it can for many years ahead publish high-quality nonpartisan news to millions of customers each day”.

He added: “I want to thank Jeff Bezos for his support and leadership throughout my tenure as CEO and Publisher. The institution could not have a better owner.”

Mr Lewis’ notice was shared online by Matt Viser, the Post’s White House bureau chief.

The Post said that Jeff D’Onofrio, chief financial officer of the newspaper owned by Mr Bezos, will serve as acting publisher ‌and CEO.

Mr Lewis, a former Dow Jones chief ‌executive and publisher of ‍the Wall Street Journal, was appointed to the role at the Washington Post in 2023.

He took over from Fred Ryan, who had served as publisher and chief executive for nearly a decade.

His tenure had been rocky from the start, marked by redundancies and a failed reorganisation plan that led to the departure of former editor Sally Buzbee.

The Post also lost tens of thousand of subscribers following Mr Bezos’ order late in the US presidential campaign pulling back an expected endorsement of Kamala Harris for president, and subsequent changes to turn the editorial pages in a more conservative direction.

Dozens of flood warnings issued in UK

The latest round of layoffs were announced by the paper to staff on Wednesday, with several foreign bureaus, the sports section and its books coverage to be folded.

In a note to staff, executive editor Matt Murray called the move “painful” but necessary to put it on a stronger footing and adapt to technology and user habits, telling them the Post “can’t be everything to everyone”.

Fans switch political parties after Nicki Minaj embraces Trump publicly

NEWYou can now listen to Fox News articles!

Nicki Minaj’s recent embrace of President Donald Trump, including her support for voter ID laws and public praise for the president, is now sparking a fresh wave of political reaction online with some fans saying they are leaving the Democrat Party and aligning with Republicans.

The fan posts, first reported by Newsweek on Saturday, surfaced after a week of heightened attention around Minaj’s political comments.

Several self-identified fans, often known as the “Barbz,” said on X that Minaj’s stance had influenced their own political thinking.

One fan wrote on X, “Today is the day I switch to republican,” in a post that had been viewed more than 300,000 times. The user later wrote in replies that they had never voted before but planned to do so.

Another fan account posted, “Officially a Republican!!!!!!! I’ll never vote for a democrat ever again,” alongside a photo of Minaj and Trump. The post also surpassed 300,000 views.

A third account wrote, “MAGA BARBZ IT IS I will never vote dem again!!” in a post that drew more than 70,000 views.

The online reaction follows a series of political statements and public appearances by Minaj over the past week that drew widespread attention. Earlier this month, the rapper voiced support for voter ID laws in a post on X, questioning why the issue remains a subject of debate in the U.S. The comments drew praise from Rep. Anna Paulina Luna, R-Fla.

Days later, Trump publicly praised Minaj while walking the red carpet at the premiere of Melania, calling her “a terrific person” and “a winner.” Minaj has also appeared alongside Trump at public events, including the Trump Accounts Summit, where she described herself as “probably the president’s number one fan.”

As the conversation continued online, conservative activists and organizations pointed to the fan reaction as a potential opportunity for voter outreach. Scott Presler wrote on X that he would personally help Minaj’s fans register to vote or change their party affiliation.

Tyler Bowyer of Turning Point Action also weighed in, writing on X, “Nicki Minaj should go on tour and we can all help register tens of thousands of new voters through her concerts.”

Minaj’s political shift has also drawn backlash from critics and some fans. Viral clips have circulated showing her music being booed in clubs, while online petitions calling for her deportation have gained traction. She has also faced public criticism from Trevor Noah at the Grammys last week.

Some critics have argued that Minaj’s alignment with Trump is motivated by a desire to secure pardons for her brother and husband. Minaj has pushed back on that narrative, saying that criticism of her political views “motivates me to support him more.”

Despite the flurry of online discussion, it remains unclear whether the social media posts will translate into voter registration or turnout.

Fox News Digital reached out to Minaj’s representatives for comment but did not receive a response by publication time.

Minneapolis protesters arrested during one-month anniversary of Renee Good’s death | Minneapolis

0

Police arrested several demonstrators Saturday outside a federal building just south of Minneapolis, breaking up a protest marking the one-month anniversary of a Minnesota woman’s death at the hands of an immigration officer.

Renee Good was killed on 7 January as she was driving away from immigration officers in a Minneapolis neighborhood. Her death and the killing of another Minneapolis resident, Alex Pretti, just weeks later have stoked outrage nationwide over Donald Trump’s immigration crackdown.

Scores of protesters gathered across the street from the Bishop Henry Whipple federal building around midday, throwing bottles and sex toys at a line of police guarding the property. The Minnesota Star Tribune reported that officers arrested a handful of protesters after the crowd starting throwing chunks of ice. A deputy was hit in the head, and a squad vehicle’s windshield was smashed, according to a statement the newspaper obtained from the Hennepin county sheriff’s office.

Police declared the gathering unlawful and ordered protesters to leave. Many complied, the Star Tribune reported, but about 100 remained in a standoff with deputies, state troopers and state conservation officers.

Video circulating on social media shows several protesters being forced to the ground and taken into custody. One person, as they appear to be placed in handcuffs, says: “I was here delivering pizza for the protesters. I had no idea that this was happening. I moved to the side of the curb when they started rushing everyone and now they’re arresting me. I am a peaceful protester delivering pizza and they’re arresting me.”

No one from the sheriff’s office responded to email, voicemail and text messages from the Associated Press on Saturday afternoon requesting a copy of the statement and inquiring about how many people were arrested, whether anyone was injured and what led up to the arrests.

Meanwhile on Saturday, hundreds of people gathered on a snow-covered field in a Minneapolis park to honor Good and Pretti. Event organizers echoed recent criticisms of the immigration crackdown across Minnesota, characterizing it as a federal occupation.

A Lakota spiritual leader, Chief Arvol Looking Horse, led a ceremony at the front of the crowd filled with people holding signs and American flags. Others shared music and poetry to honor the two people who have become central figures in the polarizing immigration debate in recent weeks.

A federal immigration officer shot and killed Good , a 37-year-old mother of three, in her car in Minneapolis on 7 January. Three agents surrounded her Honda Pilot SUV on a snowy street a few blocks from Good’s home. Bystander video show an officer approaching the SUV, which was stopped across the middle of the road, demanding the driver open the door and grabbing the handle.

The vehicle began to pull forward and a different ICE officer standing in front of it pulled his weapon and immediately fired at close range, jumping back as the vehicle moved toward him. The Trump administration has painted Good as a domestic terrorist who tried to run over an officer with her vehicle. State and local officials have rejected that characterization.

Pretti was killed on 24 January during a scuffle with immigration officers on the street. Bystander video shows a half-dozen officers taking Pretti to the ground. One spots Pretti’s gun, which he was licensed to carry, and shouts: “He’s got a gun.” Two officers then open fire.

The Trump administration’s border czar, Tom Homan, on Wednesday announced the administration would pull 700 immigration officers from Minnesota – roughly a quarter of the officers deployed to the state – after state and local officials agreed over the past week to cooperate by turning over arrested immigrants. Homan did not say when the administration would end its crackdown in the state, however.

Good’s wife, Becca Good, issued a statement Saturday saying that the immigration effort is hurting people in Minneapolis and no one knows their names.

“You know my wife’s name and you know Alex’s name, but there are many others in this city being harmed that you don’t know – their families are hurting just like mine, even if they don’t look like mine,” Becca Good said in the statement. “They are neighbors, friends, co-workers, classmates. And we must also know their names. Because this shouldn’t happen to anyone.”

Marina Dunbar contributed reporting.

Suryakumar breaks Babar Azam record: Suryakumar Yadav achieved a special achievement as captain in his first match of T20 World Cup against America. He left Pakistan’s Babar Azam behind by scoring unbeaten 84 runs in 49 balls on his captaincy debut. Chris Gayle is on top of the list.

Suryakumar Yadav made a big record in the first match of T20 World Cup as captain.

New Delhi. Indian team captain Suryakumar Yadav changed the map of the match by playing a brilliant innings for the team in trouble against America. By scoring 84 runs in 49 balls, he placed second in the list of batsmen who scored the most runs on captaincy debut in the T20 World Cup. Suryakumar showed the full range of his shots by hitting ten fours and four sixes at the Wankhede Stadium and started India’s 2026. Will be counted among his best innings in the history of the tournament.

The beginning of the match was a bit difficult for the hosts. Abhishek Sharma was out on the very first ball of the second over after getting caught by Ali Khan in deep cover, which started the batting problems.
Tilak Verma fought back briefly and batted with confidence against Saurabh Netravalkar and Shadley van Schalkwyk, while Ishan Kishan contributed 20 runs. However, Van Schalkwyk dealt a blow to India’s batting by quickly dismissing Kishan, Tilak and Shivam Dubey.

Rinku Singh, Hardik Pandya and Axar Patel were also out cheaply and India had lost six wickets for 77 runs by the 13th over. Van Schalkwyk took 4 wickets and gave only 2 runs. Captain Suryakumar Yadav stood firm in this difficult situation. He showed composure and excellent shot selection, rotated the strike well and carried his innings brilliantly. Suryakumar, the only batsman who understood the wicket completely, showed pace in the death overs, scoring 34 runs in the last two overs, which included 21 runs in the final over. His unbeaten innings took India to a fighting, but below average, score of 161 runs.

Who scored the most runs on captaincy debut in T20 World Cup?

India’s bowling performed brilliantly in the second innings and led to victory by 29 runs. This victory and handling the team especially in difficult situations will give tremendous confidence to Suryakumar for the rest of the tournament. In 2007, Bangladesh captain Mohammad Ashraful scored 61 runs against West Indies. In this edition, Mahela Jayawardene of Sri Lanka had 65 runs in his name. Babar Azam played an unbeaten inning of 68 runs in 2021. Suryakumar Yadav made the second position by playing a not out inning of 84 runs. West Indies legend Chris Gayle is at the top with 88 runs.
