Weather agencies and climate scientists have pointed to the possibility of an El Niño forming in the Pacific Ocean later this year – a phenomenon that could push global temperatures to all-time record highs in 2027.

Both the US government’s National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) and Australia’s Bureau of Meteorology have said some climate models are forecasting an El Niño but both cautioned those results came with uncertainties.

Experts told the Guardian it was too early to be confident, but there were signals in the spread of sea surface temperatures in the Pacific that suggested an El Niño could form in 2026.

The cycle of ocean temperatures in the Pacific – known as the El Niño southern oscillation (ENSO) – is linked with extreme climate events around the world.

When warmer-than-average waters gather in the east of the equatorial Pacific and extend to the coast of the American continent, this is known as an El Niño and tends to give global temperatures a boost and, in Australia, can be linked to drier and hotter conditions.

The latest southern hemisphere outlook from Australia’s bureau said this week: “Some models suggest the possibility of El Niño development from June.” The bureau cautioned this was a “very long lead time” for predicting an El Niño.

NOAA has also said “there are growing chances of El Niño” but also pointed to uncertainty in the models.

Dr Andrew Watkins, a climate scientist at Monash University and the former head of long-range forecasts at the bureau, said: “We have a lot of warm water stored up in the western tropical Pacific. Typically when the trade winds ease that will slosh back to the east and warm up the areas off South America.

“The models are going for that to happen over [the Australian] autumn, which is fairly much what you’d expect.”

He said the “precursors are there” for an El Niño but it was too early to tell if the phenomenon would develop.

Associate Professor Andrea Taschetto, an ENSO expert at the University of New South Wales, said a current La Niña – where warmer waters are closer to Australia – was coming to an end, and forecasting beyond that was difficult.

She said the chances of an El Niño developing, or ENSO being neutral, in June to August was currently about 50/50 or “like tossing a coin”.

The past three years have each been in the top three warmest years on record for the planet.

Dr Zeke Hausfather, a research scientist at the US-based independent Berkeley Earth research group, said an El Niño that formed in mid-2023 and lasted until around April 2024 had likely added about 0.12C to global temperatures in 2024.

“If El Niño develops later this year it will likely peak around November-January and primarily impact 2027 global surface temperatures, rather than 2026.

“This is why I have predicted that 2027 will likely set a new record [for global temperature] if a moderate to strong El Niño event ends up developing.”

Watkins agreed if an El Niño did develop it would more strongly impact global temperatures in 2027.

“I would be hesitant to bet against a hottest year on record,” he said.

But he said global heating caused mostly by the burning of fossil fuels was now “so strong” that it was “simply overtaking year-to-year variability in terms of air temperature”.

“I don’t think we are surprised by anything any more,” he said. “You might not need a strong El Niño to get these warmer temperatures.”

What the government and credit bureaus do and don’t do

When someone dies, Social Security is usually notified by the funeral home. That step helps, but it does not automatically secure a person’s financial identity.

Here is what often surprises families:

  • Credit bureaus are not synchronized in real time
  • A death notice does not instantly stop fraud attempts
  • Scammers specifically target recently deceased individuals
  • Gaps between systems create opportunities for misuse

In short, relying on automation alone leaves room for problems.

Before adding more steps, it matters to acknowledge what Janet already did correctly.

  • Credit freezes with all three bureaus
  • Early awareness of identity risks

When speed matters, credit locks — different from freezes — give you instant on/off control. That combination puts someone well ahead of most families.

Steps to protect a loved one’s identity after death

Once the immediate paperwork is underway, these practical steps help close the gaps scammers look for. None of them is super complicated, but together they create a much stronger layer of protection.

1) Add a deceased flag to credit files

Even with a credit freeze in place, this step adds another layer of protection that lenders see immediately.

Contact Equifax, Experian and TransUnion and ask them to mark the credit file as deceased. Each bureau may request:

A copy of the death certificate

  • Proof that you are the surviving spouse or executor

Once the flag is added, fraudulent applications become much harder to process because lenders are alerted upfront. A credit lock provides the same blocking effect, but with real-time control; this can matter when you’re managing a deceased estate or responding quickly to lender requests.

2) Monitor identity activity while you manage everything else

This is where many checklists fall short. Credit freezes and deceased flags help, but identity misuse can still surface in other ways.

Fraud attempts may appear as:

  • Account takeovers
  • Unauthorized credit inquiries
  • Use of personal data outside traditional credit

That is why ongoing monitoring still matters.

3) Secure sensitive documents during estate administration

Her father’s war grave in Gaza was bulldozed by Israel. Amid the grief and anger, she wants answers | Australian military

“Fighting for those who love him, our darling daddy died,” the inscription reads.

Just saying the words threatens to overwhelm Wilma Spence.

In the quiet of her living room, tears welling in her eyes, Wilma shares the inscription that was carved into the now-ruined tombstone of her father, Albert Kemp, an Anzac buried in the Gaza War Cemetery.

But her father’s grave, she learned this week, has almost certainly been destroyed along with the graves of hundreds of other Commonwealth war dead, bulldozed by the Israel Defense Forces.

Wilma has had no official word, but she knows exactly where his grave was, in a corner of the cemetery that houses the graves of Australians who died during the second world war, where satellite imagery shows the worst of the damage has been sustained.

An IDF spokesperson claimed the military destroyed the graves to deal with “underground terrorist infrastructure … identified within the cemetery and in its surrounding area”, a claim that has been met with deep scepticism by families of the Anzac dead.

Wilma and her family now have no idea where Albert’s remains are.

They have been left gripped by grief and anger.

“They have no respect for the living, so why would they respect the dead?” Wilma says of the Israeli government.

Wilma was too young to know her father. He enlisted in Dandenong, in south-eastern Melbourne, in October 1939, joining the 2/7 Battalion of the Australian Infantry Force and fighting across several theatres in Europe and the Middle East. He earned the Africa Star and the 1939-45 Star, among other campaign medals, and was promoted to acting corporal in 1941 before his death in Palestine the next year, aged 27.

What she knew, she had learned secondhand through relatives. She has travelled across Crete and the Middle East, tracing the path of her father’s Anzac service. But it was at his grave where she felt closest to him.

Wilma visited the Gaza War Cemetery in 1995, braving a two-hour Mossad interrogation and armed checkpoints by herself.

She brought with her a wreath, a photo of her father and an Australian flag.

Wilma was alone in the cemetery, save for the Palestinian caretakers, when she finally found her father’s tombstone. Grave 3, Row A, of Section B, was where he lay.

“I just broke down, started crying,” she says.

“It was very emotional. I suppose, in some way, I’d like to go back, and take somebody else with me.”

But the site appears to have now been obliterated by IDF bulldozers. Military earthmoving has occurred within the last year to the southern corner of the cemetery. Satellite photographs show rows of gravestones removed and soil significantly disturbed across sections A and B of the cemetery, which hold the graves of second world war soldiers, the vast majority Australian. A substantial earth berm can be seen in the images, running through the middle of the disturbed area.

After being shown satellite images of the cemetery, the IDF said that it had been forced to take defensive measures during military operations.

“During IDF operations in the area, terrorists attempted to attack IDF troops and took cover in structures close to the cemetery. In response to ensure the safety of IDF troops operating on the ground, operational measures were taken in the area to neutralize identified threats.”

Wilma has been writing to the prime minister, Anthony Albanese, since October 2023, urging him to protect the sites and investigate and remediate any damage. She has been fobbed off, referred to the foreign affairs department or the Office of Australian War Graves.

“Your response referred me to the Dept.Foreign Affairs,” she wrote to the prime minister’s office in October 2023. “I consider this an abrogation of the responsibility of our national spokesperson, our PM. And to his responsibilities to those Australian Citizens so totally concerned at the genocide of Palestinians.”

“My father, a World War 2 soldier is buried in the Gaza War Cemetery along with some 200 other Australian soldiers. Perhaps the Prime Minister could find out whether the cemetery has been obliterated by nearby bombing and explain whether action will be taken to restore their gravesites or alternatively return their remains to Australia.”

Now, with the impending visit of the Israeli president, Isaac Herzog, Wilma wants the Albanese government to show the leadership she has been calling for.

At the very least, she wants pressure placed on Israel to allow staff from the Office of Australian War Graves into Gaza to assess the damage.

“I’d like them to raise it with the Israeli president,” she says.

“I think they’re passing the buck, continually referring it to the Australian war graves commission.”

The prime minister’s office has been contacted for comment.

Earlier this week, a spokesperson for Australia’s Department of Veterans’ Affairs told Guardian Australia there had been “significant damage” to the Gaza War Cemetery “and this includes the graves of Australians”.

“The Office of Australian War Graves is very concerned by the damage to the cemetery,” they said.

“The Commonwealth War Graves Commission plans to secure and repair the cemetery as soon as it is safe to do so, however, it is expected that full reconstruction will take some time as the immediate post-conflict priority for works will be directed to humanitarian efforts.”

On Friday the acting prime minister, Richard Marles, said the government was “obviously very concerned” about the destruction of Australian war graves in Gaza.

“We have clearly expressed our concern,” he said. “As soon as the situation is one where we can safely repair those graves, obviously, we will do that, but that’s clearly not what the situation is on this day.”

Wilma wrote a poem about her father. Its final lines hint at the power her father’s grave held in her heart and now, at the pain she endures at its loss.

“I stood at your grave in the Gaza sun, the smell of Eucalypts filling the air. My tears fell in the dust, it seemed unjust to lose you, so young – unfair.”

“And I wished you home to comfort and love, and those who cared.”

A friend of Savannah Guthrie said the “prayers of a nation” are with the NBC host as her family continues to plead for the safe return of their mother.

Paula Faris, a former ABC News correspondent and founder of CARRY Media, said she texted Guthrie earlier this week to offer her support and prayers. Faris said the two bonded over their deep faith and noted that Guthrie prioritizes family over fame.

“All she ever wanted was a family, and I know all she wants right now is to be reunited with her mom, Nancy. Our hearts are just breaking for her,” Faris said Friday on “The Will Cain Show.”

Faris, who moderated a session during Savannah Guthrie’s book tour, described the longtime anchor as “genuine” and exactly as she appears. She said Guthrie’s book, “Mostly What God Does,” explores faith, doubt and suffering.

In a video posted Wednesday night, the Guthrie family urged anyone with information about their mother’s disappearance to come forward, addressing reports of ransom notes and saying they are “ready to talk.”

Post-Brexit sales of British farm products to EU fall by 37% | Farming

Exports of British farm products to the EU have dropped almost 40% in the five years since Brexit, highlighting the trade barriers caused by the UK’s divorce from the EU in 2020.

Analysis of HMRC data by the National Farmers’ Union shows the decline in sales of everything from British beef to cheddar cheese has dropped by 37.4% in the five years since 2019, the last full year before Brexit.

The poultry sector has been hit hardest with exports down 37.7%, followed by beef exports, which are down 23.6%, lamb 14% and dairy 15.6%.

Tom Bradshaw, the NFU president, said not all of the decline could be put down to Brexit but it showed the scale of damage caused by the UK leaving the European Union.

He warned removing the trading barriers would not magically revive EU markets for the British food sector.

“Simply reducing friction doesn’t mean we are going to get the EU market back again. There aren’t empty spaces on the shelves with a label saying ‘waiting for British products’.”

In other words, it could take years to restore Brexit losses.

“Rebuilding demand will take time, effort and real focus,” he said.

The analysis comes as the UK and the EU look to set up fortnightly political phone meetings to ensure the negotiations over farming and other elements of the “reset” in relations go smoothly between now and May or June, when the next leaders’ summit is scheduled.

Cabinet Office and EU relations minister, Nick Thomas-Symonds, and European Commissioner Maroš Šefčovič had a bilateral on the sidelines of the trade deal review on Monday and agreed formalising talks would help nip any issue in the bud before it was too late.

A government source said that while relations between Thomas-Symonds and Šefčovič were good there was a desire to formalise regular political-level negotiations in the run-up to the summit.

“We want to step the political engagement up even further to iron out issues and drive forward negotiations. Both sides are keen to get positive results and keep building,” the source said.

The EU had set a €2bn price tag on joining while the UK was only prepared to put in “hundreds of millions”, but many thought the gap should have been closed through political discussion given both sides agree on the need to strengthen Europe’s defence in the face of a US retreat.

In the near term, the NFU is asking for the deal to ensure British farmers have sufficient time to transition to new rules that will apply to the GB market.

It is also asking for certain exemptions to help safeguard areas of progress and innovation. For example, England has been faster than the EU to approve gene editing to develop disease resistant crops.

“The EU is behind us, but moving in the same direction on plants. My argument to the EU is if you genuinely want to adopt this in the EU, don’t put the handbrake on the UK,” Bradshaw said.

The UK outside the EU, has been able to move faster on vaccines on TB and aviation flu, for example, said Bradshaw, and has also approved some plant protection products, such as a fungicide used in cereal growing.

Bradshaw says the deal should recognise the UK’s advances and if the EU is going in the same direction as the UK it should agree to “carve outs and transition arrangements”.

He argues an adequate transition period is needed to prevent crops, which have been grown legally under current Great Britain rules prior to any agreement, becoming unsellable after a deal.

The actress, best known for her roles in “Clarissa Explains It All” and “Sabrina the Teenage Witch,” lost about 18 pounds after cutting sugar and alcohol as part of what she described as a “longevity journey,” she told People earlier this month.

“I just wanted to feel better. It had nothing to do with losing weight,” Hart, 49, said at Aerosmith frontman Steven Tyler’s Grammy viewing party on Feb. 1 in Los Angeles.

Hart said it began by working out more intensely and paying closer attention to her lifestyle. In the process, she discovered intermittent fasting and decided to eliminate sugar and alcohol.

She added that giving up alcohol was an easy decision.

“I just don’t even enjoy drinking. So why bother?” Hart said. “So I cut these things out of my life, and I started to feel better. And in doing that, I lost a lot of weight and kind of feel great.”
