Louvre releases photos of crown damaged in heist – but insists it will be restored | World News

The crown of French Empress Eugenie recovered after last year’s Louvre heist was left damaged – but remains largely intact and will be restored, the museum has said.

Jewels worth an estimated £76m were stolen in an audacious raid at the museum in Paris on 19 October last year.

The thieves, who pulled off the heist in minutes while the attraction was open to visitors, left a diamond-studded headpiece belonging to the wife of Napoleon III – who ruled France in the 19th century – after dropping it during their escape.

The crown suffered “crushing damage” and was “significantly deformed” – but restoration will be possible without the need for reconstruction or re-creation, the museum said in a statement.

The museum also released photographs of the damaged crown, which it said is missing one of eight golden eagles that adorned it but retains its 56 emeralds and all but 10 of its 1,354 diamonds.

The restoration will be overseen by an expert committee led by the Louvre‘s director Laurence des Cars.

Five people have been charged with involvement in the heist, however, the stolen haul – which included jewellery linked to other royal figures from French history – has not been recovered.

The gang used a stolen furniture lift to access the second floor Galerie d’Apollon, a room in the Louvre outside which Empress Eugenie’s crown was found.

They then cracked open display cases with angle grinders before escaping with their loot and fleeing on the back of two scooters driven by accomplices.

Speaking shortly after the heist, art detective Arthur Brand told Sky News: “These crown jewels are so famous, you just cannot sell them.

“The only thing they can do is melt the silver and gold down, dismantle the diamonds, try to cut them. That’s the way they will probably disappear forever.”

Betterment breach scope pegged at 1.4M users • The Register

0

Breach-tracking site Have I Been Pwned (HIBP) claims a cyberattack on Betterment affected roughly 1.4 million users – although the investment company has yet to publicly confirm how many customers were affected by January’s intrusion.

The figure surfaced today after HIBP added the incident to its database. HIBP says the dataset tied to the attack contains approximately 1.4 million unique email addresses, along with partial personal information that aligns with details previously acknowledged by the fintech firm.

Betterment, which offers automated investment and financial planning services, first disclosed the breach in January after detecting unauthorized access to certain internal systems on January 9. Betterment said the hacker gained entry through a social engineering scheme that relied on impersonation to infiltrate third-party marketing and operations tools, then used that access to send customers a fraudulent cryptocurrency promotion disguised as an official company message.

In its most recent customer update, published on February 3, Betterment said the intrusion did not expose customer accounts, passwords, or login credentials, and the fallout involved customer contact details, including names and email addresses. For a subset of users, the accessed data also included additional information such as physical mailing addresses, phone numbers, or dates of birth.

It is working with an independent data analytics provider to review material allegedly posted online by a group claiming responsibility for the breach. While Betterment hasn’t said who was behind the incident, the notorious ShinyHunters crew recently told The Register that it gained access to Betterment’s systems by voice phishing its Okta single sign-on codes.

The extortion group claimed to have leaked 20 million Betterment records, but its dark web leak site was offline at the time of publication.

Betterment did not immediately respond to The Register‘s questions.

While Betterment has stressed that investment accounts and authentication data were not touched, exposure of contact and identity-related details still carries risk. Such datasets are prized by phishing campaigns and account takeover attempts, particularly when tied to financial services users.

Betterment advises customers to be skeptical of unsolicited emails or calls. It says it won’t ask for passwords or financial information via unsolicited messages.

The incident also serves as a useful reminder that while companies like Betterment automate investing, they still collect plenty of personal data that attackers are keen to get their hands on. ®

Bill Belichick, Robert Kraft officially fail to to make Pro Football Hall of Fame

0

NEWYou can now listen to Fox News articles!

The Pro Football Hall of Fame class of 2026 was officially revealed on Thursday, and Bill Belichick and Robert Kraft were left out of Canton.

Arizona Cardinals wide receiver Larry Fitzgerald, Carolina Panthers linebacker Luke Kuechly, Indianapolis Colts and New England Patriots kicker Adam Vinatieri, San Diego Chargers and New Orleans Saints quarterback Drew Brees and San Francisco 49ers running back Roger Craig were named to the class that will be inducted into the Hall of Fame in August.

Craig finally gets into the Hall. He was the first player to have 1,000 yards rushing and 1,000 yards receiving in a single season. He won three Super Bowl titles with the 49ers and also played with the Los Angeles Raiders and Minnesota Vikings. He got into the Hall over Belichick, Kraft, Ken Anderson and L.C. Greenwood.

The lack of Belichick and Kraft caused immense consternation in the NFL world in the days leading up to the official announcement, which took place at the NFL Honors.

Vinatieri was the only one in the class who was a part of the Patriots’ dynasty. He won four Super Bowl titles between his time with the Patriots and Colts. He was largely considered to be one of the most clutch kickers of his generation.

Fitzgerald was a wide receiver who couldn’t have been more reliable as a pass catcher. He was an 11-time Pro Bowler and was an All-Pro once. He played from 2004 to 2020. He had 1,432 catches for 17,492 yards and 121 touchdowns. He spent his entire career with the Cardinals and played in one Super Bowl.

Kuechly was a centerpiece for the Panthers’ defense from 2012 to 2019. He was in a Pro Bowl in seven of the eight years he played in the NFL. He was the 2012 Defensive Rookie of the Year and the 2013 Defensive Player of the Year. Kuechly was named to the Hall of Fame’s All-2010s team as he finished his career with 1,092 tackles, 18 interceptions and 12.5 sacks.

NSW chief justice says Tony Abbott’s criticism of Harbour Bridge march judge ‘misconceived and ignorant’ | Australian law

0

The chief justice of New South Wales has criticised former prime minister Tony Abbott for what he says was a regrettable, misconceived and ignorant attack on a judge’s decision regarding last year’s pro-Palestine Sydney Harbour Bridge march.

Andrew Bell said in a speech on Thursday evening that Abbott’s post on X in August last year threatened social cohesion.

Abbott commented on a NSW supreme court decision before the Gaza harbour bridge march that an estimated 225,000 to 300,000 people attended.

The former Liberal leader posted that “it should not be for judges to decide when a political protest is justified”.

Sign up: AU Breaking News email

“The decision to close the Sydney Harbour Bridge to facilitate this protest is a political decision and should be made by elected and accountable ministers – who, it happens, think the march should not go ahead,” Abbott wrote at the time.

“We are on a slippery slope when unelected judges start making political judgments.”

Bell, in a speech at a dinner to mark the opening of the law term, said on Thursday that Abbott had “regrettably” posted about justice Belinda Rigg’s decision. He said the comment on X was “misconceived”.

“The judge’s decision was not one concerning whether ‘a political protest was justified as any understanding of the statutory framework and case law set out in the judge’s reasons would have made plain to anyone who took the time to read it,” the chief justice told diners.

“The judge did not make ‘the decision to close the Sydney Harbour Bridge’. The authorities had already taken the decision to close the harbour bridge in any event, that is to say, irrespective of the judge’s decision, a fact twice recorded in the judgment and one which was influential in the ultimate decision.

“Responsibility for the decision the subject of the criticism was one expressly given to the court by the legislature; it was not an unauthorised assumption of jurisdiction by ‘an unelected judge’.”

Bell concluded that Rigg’s decision “was not a ‘political’ judgment but involved the careful weighing of the common law and constitutionally protected right to free speech and public assembly”.

He added that a subsequent court of appeal decision over which he presided, which prevented a march to the Opera House, was also not a “political decision” but involved a similar weighing exercise.

Bell, earlier in Thursday’s speech, criticised other “simplistic but frequently highly personal criticism” in the press and on social media of some judges who had granted bail where the prisoner had subsequently reoffended.

“While judicial decisions on subjects such as bail and public assemblies should not be free from scrutiny or criticism where justified, social cohesion to which I have already referred is not enhanced when judicial decisions are attacked on bases and in terms that betray an ignorance of the statutory framework for the decision and, in very many cases, an ignorance of the judge’s reasoning process and of the evidence before the court by reference to which the decision was made,” Bell said.

“Such attacks, often dashed ‘off the cuff’, are a form of misinformation that undermines trust in and respect for the judiciary and the rule of law.”

The chief justice added: “I should note in this context that two judges of the supreme court, who have been the subject of highly personalised and misconceived criticism in some sections of the media for particular decisions, have received death threats in the last 18 months. This is obviously of grave concern.”

Abbott was contacted for comment.

Patriots’ Mike Vrabel named Coach of the Year at NFL Honors

0

NEWYou can now listen to Fox News articles!

Mike Vrabel is focused on winning his first-ever Super Bowl as a head coach, but he was already honored this week in San Francisco.

The New England Patriots head coach was named Coach of the Year at the NFL Honors on Thursday night.

Vrabel won the award over his opponent on Sunday in Super Bowl LX, Seattle Seahawks’ Mike Macdonald, San Francisco 49ers’ Kyle Shanahan, Jacksonville Jaguars’ Liam Coen, and Chicago Bears’ Ben Johnson.

This is the second time in Vrabel’s coaching career that he has won the award. He received 19 of the 50 first-place votes and had a total of 302 points.

Vrabel first won the award while leading the Tennessee Titans in 2021.

Vrabel is now the seventh coach to ever win Coach of the Year for multiple franchises, joining Chuck Nox, Bill Parcells, Bruce Arians, Dan Reeves, Don Shula and George Allen.

When the Titans moved on, Vrabel didn’t take a job elsewhere in the NFL. Instead, he waited a year and the Patriots moved on after just a single season under Jerod Mayo.

The Patriots had just won four games for the second straight season, and it’s their first without Bill Belichick at the helm. So, owner Robert Kraft went with another familiar face and former Super Bowl champion, this time with head coaching experience already.

Drake Maye and Mike Vrabel

Under his tutelage this season, Vrabel led the Patriots to a 14-3 regular-season record, tied for the best record in the NFL. It’s the biggest turnaround in a single season in NFL history, tied with the 1999 Indianapolis Colts and 2008 Miami Dolphins, who also saw 10-win improvements.

Vrabel was also able to see a perfect 9-0 record on the road, including the playoffs, becoming the first NFL team in history to do so.

Vrabel, of course, would point to his team when talking about his candidacy, but he would be right to look at quarterback Drake Maye, an MVP finalist at the NFL Honors on Thursday night with him. Maye, in just his second season, showcased why he was a top choice out of UNC with his consistency, poise and play-making abilities under offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels’ scheme.

Vrabel and the Patriots are not yet complete with their 2025 NFL season. They still have one game left to play — Super Bowl LX at Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara, where Vrabel is hoping to lift the Vince Lombardi Trophy for the first time since he last touched it as a Patriots linebacker in 2004.
