New Zealand’s Deputy Prime Minister David Seymour has rejected criticism of his claims that colonisation was positive for the country’s Indigenous Maori population.
Dozens of people started booing and shouting when Seymour stood on Friday to offer a prayer during a dawn service at the Waitangi Treaty Grounds, where New Zealand’s founding document was signed in 1840 by representatives of the British Crown and more than 500 Maori Indigenous chiefs, setting out how the two sides would govern the country.

Seymour made his controversial comments that colonisation had been an overall positive experience for Indigenous people on Thursday during a speech to mark national Waitangi Day, an annual political gathering that gives Indigenous tribes a chance to air grievances.
“I’m always amazed by the myopic drone that colonisation and everything that’s happened in our country was all bad,” said Seymour, who is leader of the right-wing ACT Party and a member of the Maori community.
“The truth is that very few things are completely bad,” Seymour had said, according to local online news site Stuff.
Describing his hecklers on Friday as “a couple of muppets shouting in the dark”, Seymour said the “silent majority up and down this country are getting a little tired of some of these antics”.
Following Seymour’s prayer on Friday, left-wing Labour Party leader Chris Hipkins was also loudly jeered by those in attendance.
On Thursday, Indigenous leader Eru Kapa-Kingi told parliamentarians “this government has stabbed us in the front,” and the previous Labour government had “stabbed us in the back”.
Seymour’s government has been accused of seeking to wind back special rights given to the country’s 900,000-strong Maori population, who were dispossessed of their land during British colonisation and remain far more likely to die early, live in poverty or be imprisoned compared with the country’s non- Indigenous population.
Controversial legislation that was tabled last year seeking to reinterpret the treaty’s principles and roll back policies designed to address inequalities experienced by Indigenous people led to protests and failed after two of the three governing parties did not vote for it.
Speaking on Friday, New Zealand Prime Minister Christopher Luxon called for national unity and for steps to address challenges faced by the Maori community.
Luxon also said the national debate over the legacy of British colonisation should remain civil.
“We don’t settle our differences through violence. We do not turn on each other; we turn towards the conversation. We work through our differences,” Luxon said in a social media post.
Denial about the destructive legacy of colonialism and its connection to contemporary challenges faced by Indigenous communities remains a frequent subject of contentious debate in former colonies around the world, including Australia and New Zealand.

Later, people gave CPR, but by then he had died. An immediate attempt was made to save Harimohan Sen but his breathing did not come back. There was chaos among the family members and the atmosphere of happiness suddenly turned into mourning.
On receiving the information, police number 112 reached the spot and took him to the district hospital, where doctors declared him dead.

The family members refused to conduct post-mortem of the body. He believes that Harimohan Sen died of a heart attack and there is no need for post-mortem. Respecting the wishes of the family, the police handed over the body to the relatives.

Hong Kong pro-democracy media tycoon Jimmy Lai will be sentenced following his conviction in a national security trial, according to the Chinese self-governing territory’s judiciary.
The judiciary said on Friday on its website that it’s calling for the sentencing session on Monday morning.

The 78-year-old founder of the now-defunct Apple Daily newspaper was found guilty in December of foreign collusion under the city’s sweeping national security law, which Beijing imposed following huge and sometimes violent pro-democracy protests in 2019.
He was also found guilty of one count of seditious publication and could face life in prison.
Global leaders, including United States President Donald Trump and British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, have called for Lai’s release, while rights groups say his trial is a death knell for press freedom in Hong Kong.
Lai, a British citizen, has been behind bars since 2020, and multiple Western nations have called for his release.
Defence lawyers conceded in January the “grave nature” of the case, which found Lai guilty of calling for foreign sanctions.
He will be sentenced on Monday alongside eight co-defendants, including six Apple Daily executives.
All defendants except Lai pleaded guilty, while some testified against him, which would entitle them to shorter sentences, the lawyers said last month.
International condemnation
The judges wrote in their 856-page verdict in December that Lai “harboured his resentment and hatred of (China) for many of his adult years” and sought the “downfall of the Chinese Communist Party”.
Prosecutors cited 161 items Apple Daily published in their case against Lai.
Those items were deemed seditious under a colonial-era law because they “excited disaffection” against the government.
Lai maintained that he never sought to influence other countries’ foreign policies, saying Apple Daily represented Hongkongers’ core values, including “rule of law, freedom, pursuit of democracy”.
Lai’s case has led to condemnation internationally from journalism rights groups to global leaders.
Britain’s Starmer, who visited Beijing in January, raised Lai’s case with China’s leader Xi Jinping, noting that the two did not see eye to eye on the issue.
Following Lai’s conviction, Trump also said he had asked Xi to consider Lai’s release.
“He’s an older man, and he’s not well. So I did put that request out. We’ll see what happens,” he told reporters at the time.
Meanwhile, the European Union said the conviction was “emblematic of the erosion of democracy and fundamental freedoms in Hong Kong since the imposition of the National Security Law”.
Britain-based Amnesty International said the conviction marked a “death knell for press freedom in Hong Kong”, while the Committee to Protect Journalists called it a “sham”.

This week, meet a reader we will Regomize as “Carl” who in the late 1990s worked at a university and made the move from the desktop support team to the network management group.
“Just before I started, we installed two new servers running Novell NetWare,” Carl told On Call.
Software running on the new machines soon started to lock up and reboots and reinstalls became frequent chores, but a full fix proved elusive. Tempers frayed as email faltered, network drives became unavailable, and logins lagged.
Carl watched from the sidelines because only the two lead network admins were allowed to get hands-on with the boxes to find a fix.
Their efforts proved futile, so the university escalated the matter to Novell and the server maker.
The mess eventually landed in Carl’s lap because he got the job of informing users of the latest outage and reloading software to effect a temporary fix.
This made Carl less than popular around the office – just what a new hire needs.
Between fixes, Carl started to investigate the servers and before long found log files that recorded a long, long list of memory errors that even named the actual DIMM as the source.
“I called the lead admin and said I’d found the problem,” Carl told On Call. “At first she was skeptical but said she’d have a look.”
The lead admin asked Carl how long he had known about the memory errors.
“About four minutes,” he replied, then watched as she summoned the IT director to show him the error messages.
And then, without a word, the lead admin and IT director walked away, leaving Carl thinking he’d made a career-threatening mistake.
Thankfully, he was wrong. Colleagues soon let him know that the server maker was flying in replacement memory, along with a technician to install it. They both arrived that very night and solved the problem.
“I received a thank-you from the director and the lead admin,” Carl told On Call.
Around a month later, the lead admin resigned to become a yoga instructor, which – given her failure to spot the logs a noob found without trying – may have been a sound career move!

Which teams are playing in Super Bowl 60?
The New England Patriots will take on the Seattle Seahawks in Super Bowl LX.
It is a rematch of the 2015 Super Bowl, which New England won 28-24 at the University of Phoenix Stadium to capture their fourth title.
The Seahawks will look to exact revenge after an 11-year wait, and are considered firm favourites to win their second Vince Lombardi Trophy.
If successful, it would be their first since 2014, after they beat the Denver Broncos 43-8 at MetLife Stadium.
How were the Super Bowl teams decided?
Fourteen teams competed in the NFL playoffs, with seven qualifying from each conference.
The four division champions from the National Football Conference (NFC) and the four from the American Football Conference (AFC), along with six wild-card teams, competed in a single-elimination tournament in the lead-up to the main event.
The wild-card teams were determined by the three non-division winners with the best records in each conference.
The final four teams remaining played in their respective AFC and NFC Championship Games on January 25, with the winners punching their ticket to the Super Bowl.
The New England Patriots narrowly beat the Denver Broncos 10-7 in a low-scoring AFC Championship Game, while the Seattle Seahawks triumphed 31-27 over the Los Angeles Rams in the NFC Championship Game.
When will the Super Bowl be played?
The Super Bowl is scheduled to take place on Sunday, starting at 3:30pm local time in Santa Clara, California (23:30 GMT).
Where is Super Bowl 60 being held?
The showpiece event will take place at Levi’s Stadium, home to the San Francisco 49ers. The stadium has a capacity of 68,500 spectators.
This is just the second time that a Super Bowl has been held at Levi’s. The only other occasion was in 2016, when the Denver Broncos prevailed 24-10 against the Carolina Panthers.

Drake Maye (Patriots)
Maye’s rise from a struggling rookie season to a franchise quarterback has been one of the NFL’s most compelling narratives in recent years.
He guided the Pats to a 14-3 record, including spearheading the AFC Championship victory over the Denver Broncos with a sparkling performance.
Maye accumulated 4,394 passing yards, 31 touchdowns and gave up eight interceptions during the 2025 regular season, earning second team All-Pro honours.
The former North Carolina Tar Heel also led the league in completion percentage (72.0 percent) and passer rating (113.5).

Smith-Njigba has been the breakout star of the Seahawks’ offence through a combination of league-leading stats and big-game temperament.
He led the league in receiving yards with 1,793 yards, while simultaneously breaking the Seahawks’ single-season mark of 1,303 yards, which was set by DK Metcalf in 2020.
The former Ohio State Buckeye finished fourth in total receptions with 119, while tying in third place with 10 touchdowns.
The wide receiver had a particularly memorable NFC Championship Game against the Los Angeles Rams. He recorded 10 catches for 153 yards, while also scoring a touchdown.
There has been plenty of media speculation that he could go on to break Jerry Rice’s 37-year Super Bowl receiving yards mark of 215, which would go a long way if the Seahawks were to secure a second title.

Who is performing in the Super Bowl halftime show?
The halftime show, which runs to about 15 minutes, will be headlined by Puerto Rican global superstar Bad Bunny.
Bad Bunny, who goes by Benito Antonio Martínez Ocasio, has won six Grammy Awards, 17 Latin Grammy Awards, 16 Billboard Music Awards and 54 Billboard Latin Music Awards, among others.
The Latin reggaeton artist will make history, as he will perform his set exclusively in Spanish, which is a Super Bowl first.
He has previously said that the musical choices for the pre-game and halftime performers, American rock band Green Day and Bad Bunny, were a deciding factor in his decision not to come.
“I’m anti-them. I think it’s a terrible choice. All it does is sow hatred,” Trump told The New York Post.
Green Day has long been in opposition to Trump, going as far as changing the lyrics to one of their most popular songs to demonstrate their bitterness towards the administration.
At the 68th Grammy Awards held in Los Angeles this past weekend, Bad Bunny spoke out against US Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s (ICE) recent raids after winning the Best Musica Urbana Album award.
“Before I say thanks to God, I’m gonna say ICE out. We’re not savage, we’re not animals, we’re not aliens. We’re humans and we are Americans,” he said during his acceptance speech.

Boston Mayor Michelle Wu accused federal immigration agents of conducting “unconstitutional” operations in the city and ordered the public release of surveillance and body camera footage tied to U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) actions. She said the move is aimed at holding federal agents accountable for alleged acts of violence.
Wu and other Massachusetts officials held a joint news conference Thursday in the blue city, slamming the Trump administration’s federal immigration enforcement and pointing specifically to ICE activity in various communities.
“They are trying to do with federal agents what they have failed to do with canceled grants, sham investigations and the National Guard,” Wu said. “If we experience the kind of unlawful and unconstitutional invasion we’ve all seen in other parts of the country, then Boston will see the [Trump] administration in court again.”
The Democrat mayor said she signed an executive order Thursday morning aimed at holding federal officials accountable, directing city departments to protect residents and respond to any violence, property damage or criminal conduct related to immigration enforcement.

Wu said the order makes clear that city first responders will prioritize de-escalation and public safety during federal immigration operations.
“While the federal government hides behind masks, we will be transparent,” she said. “This order directs city departments to release surveillance and body-worn camera footage of violence or property damage by federal agents, in accordance with state law.
“This order also doubles down on our dedication to use city resources to keep our residents safe.”
Last week, Massachusetts Gov. Maura Healey introduced legislation aimed at limiting ICE activity in sensitive locations, including courthouses, schools, child care programs, hospitals and churches.

The proposal would also bar other states from deploying National Guard troops in Massachusetts without the governor’s approval and allow parents to arrange guardianship in advance for their children if they are detained or deported.
Like a recent executive order issued by Healey, Wu’s proposal would bar federal immigration agents from using city buildings, parking lots and parks for enforcement operations and makes clear that schools, libraries, community centers and senior centers are intended for learning, gathering and public services.

Wu also said the order directs the city to investigate any crimes committed in Boston, including those involving federal agents, and to make referrals to prosecutors when appropriate.
She said it also instructs city officials to pursue every available legal option to challenge what she described as coercive federal actions.
“In Boston, as it should across America, the rule of law applies to everyone,” she said.
The order adds Boston to a growing list of blue cities openly challenging the Trump administration’s immigration policies, escalating a national fight over enforcement tactics, transparency and the reach of federal power.
