An angry crowd has clashed with police outside a hospital in Alice Springs where a 47-year-old man arrested by police in connection with the death of five-year-old Kumanjayi Little Baby was being treated.

Council workers were assessing the damage on Friday morning, as fires smouldered in skip bins and a nearby service station had been pulled apart.

The arrest of Jefferson Lewis was confirmed in a brief statement by Northern Territory police just before 10pm local time on Thursday night.

“A short time ago, the Northern Territory police force located and arrested Jefferson Lewis at a residence in Alice Springs,” the statement said.

NT police commissioner Martin Dole told ABC TV on Friday morning that Lewis had been transported to Darwin by police air wing and was in police custody.

He said the move was not for medical reasons but “absolutely in relation to safety concerns – safety concerns for the hospital and medical staff, safety concerns for the police, and lastly safety concerns for Mr Lewis himself”.

“Our job, our police swear an oath to serve and protect, we don’t get to choose who we protect,” Dole said. “So the safety of Mr Lewis was important as well and he’s been relocated to Darwin.”

Police said a significant investigation was ongoing, including forensic testing.

Dole told Sky News he anticipated that charges will be laid “today or tomorrow”.

“I understand that people are grieving and I understand that people are upset, but please let the police do their job,” Dole told the ABC.

“I have been a police officer for 30 years and these jobs still rock you to the core. We just implore people in Alice Springs that assist us, just to reach out for that help, support one another, talk about what you went through.”

Lewis was found by members of community before police, and badly beaten, sources told Guardian Australia. Video seen by Guardian Australia shows several emergency service workers standing around a person lying on the ground, with voices shouting “don’t put him in the ambulance”. Police then took Lewis to hospital on Thursday night.

Hundreds of local people had gathered outside the hospital as news of his arrest spread, Dole confirmed on Friday.

Police vehicles and bins were set on fire, and objects were thrown at police who responded with teargas.

Dole said that as of early Friday morning, the unrest had been “quelled” and there was “a sense of calm at the moment across Alice Springs”.

A crowd of 15 community members remained outside the hospital early Friday morning, but later dispersed.

Smoke was still billowing from skip bins and bushes on the side of the road, where fire had been lit by the rioters.

Rubbish was scattered on the ground, spreading out from the hospital and into surrounding streets. A large white stain on the road marked where tear gas had been dispersed by police officers.

The Shell service station, across the road from the hospital, was extensively damaged. Every window, including the door, had been smashed, and the store appeared to have looted the night before.

Town clean up crews and council workers were assessing the damage as people made their morning commute to work, driving or walking past the place where chaos had erupted just hours earlier.

An arrest order was issued for Lewis, 47, on Sunday, after the young girl was reported missing by her mother from the Ilyperenye (Old Timers) town camp.

The body of the young Warlpiri girl was discovered by a police search and rescue team shortly before midday on Thursday, after five days of searching.

She is referred to as Kumanjayi Little Baby for cultural reasons, at the request of her family.

Her mother earlier issued a statement via police, addressed to her daughter.

“I know you are in heaven with the rest of the family with Jesus and the Father, Son and Holy Spirit,” she said. “Me and your brother will meet you one day … It is going to be so hard to live the rest of our lives without you.”

Police said on Monday that Kumanjayi Little Baby’s mother had gone to the town camp, one of 18 such places in Alice Springs, on Saturday to do her laundry in their free machines. They had stayed through the evening and Kumanjayi Little Baby was put to bed in one of the rooms before 11pm.

She was last seen by her mother at 11.30pm. At 1.30am, her mother found her missing and called the police.

Hundreds of volunteers and police officers searched a six square kilometre area of grass and scrubland around the camp, which backs on to the Todd River. A further 20km sq was searched via helicopter.

The Northern Territory chief minister, Lia Finocchiaro, said the whole of the NT was grieving for the young girl.

“Every Territorian has had their heart in their throat waiting for the moment when they got the announcement that she was found safe and well, and that news did not come,” she said.

Ron Takeda and Tavis Boise were a few miles off the coast of Santa Barbara when they noticed the large mass trailing behind them.

“Tavis, is it a dolphin?” asked Takeda as he stood on his foil board, a specialized form of surfing, propelling himself through the waves. Boise, who was filming their run, recognized the question as an ominous sign – the veteran surfers are familiar enough with dolphins that Takeda should have recognized one immediately.

It was, they quickly determined, a massive shark in hot pursuit of Takeda. The creature followed him closely, its fin poking above the water, as he moved at about 10mph.

Boise captured footage of the experience that has since gone viral. In the video, the animal can be seen chasing Takeda for about a minute. Boise can be heard shouting “Don’t fall!” as his path diverged from Takeda’s, then: “Oh my God, it’s coming for you!”

The shark tailed the retired mechanical engineer for about five minutes before finally letting up.

The day had begun with promise. Takeda, Boise and a friend had waited for the wind to pick up on Saturday before taking off in the water near the University of California, Santa Barbara on a 20-mile run.

As they made their way through the water, Takeda heard something behind him and quickly glanced back. He spotted a big body, as long as 13ft, and it kept on him, following his every move.

“My god, it’s still in pursuit. It’s still happening. This is beyond comprehension,” Boise said. “That’s when we both start to panic.”

They had both encountered sharks before, but never in a chase and for such a duration.

Takeda focused on staying upright and keeping the board above the surface, he said, and opting not to dwell on the shark’s presence. There were moments he thought the animal had left before he saw it behind him again, but eventually it disappeared.

Meanwhile, Boise knew that Takeda would be able to stay up more easily and decided to stay put. He caught up with him a few miles later.

Takeda’s first words to Boise after the encounter were appreciation for the glorious conditions on the water.

“The first thing he said was ‘It’s really good out here,’” Boise recalled.

They shared the video with friends and experts at the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, who agreed with their assessment that the creature was a shark, likely a great white. The footage was shared on social media by a friend and quickly got more than a million views, and a few questions about whether it was AI.

Takeda and Boise theorize that the foil on the board, which from below resembles a sting ray, might have hit the shark, initiating a game of cat and mouse. “Put yourself in the mind of the shark. Your prey just tapped you on the shoulder and ran past you,” Boise said.

They were awestruck by the experience but not discouraged. Boise titled his video “Friendly Shark Chase” in hopes of not adding to the demonization of the creature.

“It’s clear that shark chased us for a long time. I’m really certain it was just out of curiosity. It never touched us,” Takeda said.

They planned to head back out on the water on Thursday.

“We feel pretty confident that even if this happens again, we know what to do next time, which is don’t fall,” Boise said.

Musician Ross Davidson, a former singer for Spandau Ballet, has been jailed for 14 years for multiple rapes and sexual assaults.

Davidson, 38, was convicted across two trials of two counts of rape, an attempted rape, three sexual assaults and two charges of voyeurism, in offences committed against six women between August 2013 and December 2019.

The singer, who used the stage name Ross William Wild, had starred in the West End musical We Will Rock You. He also performed in 2018 as the lead singer for Spandau Ballet.

During his trial, Davidson claimed he had consent from all the women, but he was found guilty on all charges. At Wood Green crown court on Thursday, Judge John Dodd KC said he had an “adventurous attitude to matters sexually” and treated the women, some of whom cared for or loved him, “without respect”.

Each of his six victims gave evidence during the trial “vividly and without exaggeration” to state how he had “abused” their trust, the judge said.

In his first trial in July 2024, Davidson was convicted of rape, two counts of sexual assault and voyeurism involving offences against four women.

At the second trial last January a jury convicted him of raping a woman in London in March 2015, and of the attempted rape and sexual assault of another woman in Thailand in December 2019.

During the trial the prosecution said he had filmed himself raping one woman and that some of the sexual assault charges, which were based on videos recovered from his phone, showed “strikingly similar” incidents where he touched sleeping women.

Prosecutor Richard Hearnden also said videos were taken when women were “as vulnerable as can be”, as they were in “such a deep sleep that they could not be disturbed”. They found out about the sexual assaults when the police told them.

Five of the women attended his sentencing hearing, including three who sat quietly in the court as the sentence was handed down. The women encouraged others who have experienced sexual violence to speak out and report similar incidents.

“Seeing Ross accountable is an important moment for me, and I hope it encourages others who have experienced something similar to feel able to speak up and seek support,” one said.

Another added: “Speaking out about sexual violence is not easy. It can feel overwhelming, frightening and at times isolating. However, I hope that by coming forward I have shown that it is possible to be heard and that what happened matters.

“I would encourage anyone who has experienced sexual violence to know that they are not alone, and that support is available.”

Davidson was born in Aberdeen and lived in Finchley, London. Defence counsel Charlotte Newell KC said there was a period where he suffered “crippling effects” of undiagnosed ADHD and was “self-medicating” with drugs and alcohol which were “readily available” to him as a result of his life as a musician.

She also claimed that he has since shown remorse and that his conditions are improving as a result of having a stable routine in prison, receiving medication and having a supportive family.
