Rail workers accused of using ChatGPT for legal help • The Register

0

More than 30 Romanian railway employees accused of running a bribery and ticket resale racket allegedly tried to crowdsource their legal strategy from ChatGPT.

Prosecutors in Bucharest have sent 33 staff from Romania’s state rail operator CFR Călători to trial over claims they manipulated booking systems to lock sleeper and couchette seats, then quietly sold them off-the-books to passengers willing to pay cash.

According to local news outlet Club Feroviar, investigators say the workers used the personal data of students eligible for free rail travel to reserve seats that could later be flipped for profit.

The eyebrow-raising detail in the corruption probe is that once investigators began circling, court filings cited in Romanian press reports suggest that at least two of the accused individuals consulted ChatGPT to ask whether their alleged actions constituted financial harm.

Excerpts from conversations described as between an employee and the AI show questions focused less on innocence and more on legal technicalities. In one exchange, the worker allegedly asked: “Who establishes the financial damage if the injured party does not want compensation?” Another scenario reportedly posed to the chatbot questioned: “Does blocking seats in the reservation system represent damage if no financial loss can be proven?”

The exchanges also hint at mounting anxiety as investigators closed in. In one reported message, the user allegedly asked: “Why do the police call everyone to work and not to the police?” – a line that appears to reference internal workplace questioning rather than a formal summons. In another, they reportedly acknowledged investigators’ awareness of specific activity, writing: “They already know that I, for example, blocked 17 places in the system.”

The AI’s replies, according to the published excerpts, focused on general legal theory rather than anything jurisdiction-specific. The chatbot reportedly explained: “If the damage concerns a private individual or company, they usually have to request compensation… If the damage concerns the state or a public institution, authorities may intervene even without a complaint.”

It also outlined hypothetical scenarios suggesting that financial damage could be difficult to prove depending on circumstances, noting that “if no measurable loss is demonstrated, the existence of damage can be disputed.”

At one point, the chatbot allegedly offered to help draft a defense statement, writing: “Do you want me to draft a complete template of a written statement personalized for your situation, in which you acknowledge the blocking of places, but protect yourself legally as much as possible? I can do that right away.”

Romanian prosecutors appear unimpressed. Authorities compiled a case file of more than 700 pages following searches and evidence-gathering related to suspected bribery, abuse of office, and fraudulent ticketing practices dating back at least a year.

There is no suggestion ChatGPT played any role in the alleged crimes themselves – the reported conversations underline a growing trend of some people treating generative AI as a pocket legal explainer, sometimes with questionable results. Tools like ChatGPT can summarize general legal concepts, but are notorious for lacking jurisdiction-specific nuance and have a well-documented habit of sounding confident even when missing critical context.

For the Romanian rail staff now heading to court, their legal strategy may have just arrived at the wrong platform. ®

Spain v social media giants: What’s the big dispute about? | Child Rights News

0

Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez has clashed with social media platform owners over plans to ban social media for under-16s in the country.

Describing social media platforms as the “Wild West”, Sanchez announced plans to hold platform executives responsible for criminal or harmful content.

Social media executives, including tech billionaire and X owner Elon Musk and the Russian Telegram founder Pavel Durov, hit back, with Elon Musk calling Sanchez a “true fascist totalitarian” over the proposed measures this week.

Then, in an open Telegram message to all users in Spain, Durov accused Sanchez’s government of “pushing dangerous new regulations that threaten your internet freedoms”.

He claimed the measures would turn Spain “into a surveillance state under the guise of ‘protection’”.

In response, unnamed government sources told the media: “Telegram founder Pavel Durov used his unrestricted control of the app to send a mass message to all users in Spain, spreading several lies and making illegitimate attacks against the government. This is the first time this has happened in our country’s history.

“Spaniards cannot live in a world where foreign tech oligarchs can flood our phones with propaganda at will simply because the government has announced measures to protect minors and enforce the law.”

So what is the dispute about, and why has it become so heated?

What has Sanchez announced?

Speaking at the World Governments Summit in Dubai on Tuesday, Sanchez said that by banning social media for children under 16, Spain aimed to “protect them from the digital Wild West”.

Currently, social media platforms such as Facebook and TikTok require users to be at least 13 years old.

Sanchez said, “Our children are exposed to a space they were never meant to navigate alone … We will no longer accept that.”

Sanchez added that Spain would also devise a law to hold social media company executives responsible for the illegal, hateful or harmful content on their platforms.

“The power of the state is there to protect democracies from the attacks they suffer and also children and adolescents from that toxic, unpunished world that social media has unfortunately become,” Sanchez said.

“They won’t break us, because the voice of reason … will not be silenced by these techno-oligarchs of the algorithm.”

Sanchez also announced that Spain has joined a group of five European countries, which he termed the “Coalition of the Digitally Willing”, to discuss cross-border regulation of social media.

Sanchez did not provide details of what this collaborative effort could entail, nor did he name which countries would participate, but added that they would meet in the upcoming days.

“We know that this is a battle that far exceeds the boundaries of any country,” he said.

The proposed ban would be introduced as an amendment to an existing bill on digital protection for minors that is currently being debated in parliament, the Reuters news agency reported, quoting an unnamed government spokesperson.

Furiously. On Tuesday, Musk responded to a video of Sanchez’s speech on X, writing: “He is a traitor to the people of Spain.”

He then reposted the video of the speech, writing, again: “Dirty Sanchez is a tyrant and traitor to the people of Spain.”

Grok, which is the AI platform on X, was the number one mobile application in Spain last month, Musk claimed.

However, Musk has been accused of platforming the far-right and white supremacists, particularly in Europe. He addressed a political rally of the far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) party in the German city of Halle last year.

On Wednesday, Telegram founder Pavel Durov also lashed out at Sanchez in a message on Telegram, writing: “These aren’t safeguards; they’re steps toward total control. We’ve seen this playbook before – governments weaponizing ‘safety’ to censor critics.”

Durov was arrested in Paris in August 2024 for failing to curb alleged criminal activity on the messaging app and was charged with 12 offences. He denied any wrongdoing in a statement last March. He was allowed to leave France in March under judicial supervision, but the case remains open.

What do people in Spain want?

The Ipsos Education Monitor 2025, published in late August 2025, reported that 82 percent of people in Spain support banning social media for children under the age of 14, a rise from 73 percent in 2024.

The survey was conducted in 30 countries, and a majority of respondents in all 30 countries supported banning social media for children under 14.

While social media has long provided easy access to unregulated graphic content, misinformation and hate speech, the recent explosion of AI‑generated material poses new risks to the wellbeing of children and young people, experts say.

The American Psychological Association published an advisory last year warning that generative AI systems can amplify harmful content such as violent or sexual videos.

It also added that adolescents are less likely than adults to question the accuracy of AI-generated content. “They may also be unaware of the persuasive intent underlying an AI system’s advice or bias,” the advisory stated.

AI can also amplify pre-existing societal prejudices, according to Ayo Tometi, co-creator of the US-based antiracist movement Black Lives Matter.

Children worldwide are also worried about the misuse of AI for online child sexual exploitation and “deepfakes”, according to UNICEF research on children’s perspectives and AI published in October 2025.

Governments appear to be taking this seriously.

Musk’s Grok recently came under fire for allowing users to generate sexually explicit fake images of women and minors. This triggered an investigation by the European Commission last month.

On Tuesday, French prosecutors raided X’s offices in France as part of an investigation into allegations including spreading Child Sexual Assault Material (CSAM).

On the same day, the United Kingdom’s Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO) opened a formal investigation “in relation to the Grok artificial intelligence system and its potential to produce harmful sexualised image and video content,” the office noted.

In December 2025, Australia banned children under 16 from social media, becoming the world’s first country to do so. Under the law, 10 of the biggest platforms will face $33m in fines if they fail to take “reasonable steps” to purge Australian-based users younger than 16.

As of January 16, social media companies revoked access to about 4.7 million accounts identified as belonging to children in Australia, according to officials.

“We stared down everybody who said it couldn’t be done, some of the most powerful and rich companies in the world and their supporters,” Australian Communications Minister Anika Wells told reporters last month.

Days after Australia’s ban took effect, Reddit, which was one of the 10 platforms required to purge minors, lodged a challenge to the ban in the High Court, while still complying with it.

In 2023, France adopted a law mandating that social media platforms obtain parental consent before children under 15 could open accounts. However, local media report that technical difficulties have hampered enforcement.

In Germany, children aged between 13 and 16 require parental consent to be able to use social media platforms. In Italy, children under 14 need parental consent to set up social media accounts.

Last year, the Chinese internet regulator Cyberspace Administration of China (CAC) introduced a “minor mode” that applies device‑level controls and app-specific rules to limit screen time by age.

In November 2025, Denmark said it would introduce a ban on social media platforms for children under 15. Most parties said they would back this move in a parliamentary vote.

In the same month, Malaysia said it would ban social media for people under the age of 16, starting from 2026.

In January, UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer announced that his country was considering a ban similar to the one in Australia.

Greece will also announce a similar social media ban to the Spanish one for children under the age of 15, Reuters reported on Tuesday, quoting an unnamed senior government source.

FBI ‘most wanted terrorist’ arrested in Wales can be extradited, judge rules | UK News

0

One of the FBI’s “most wanted terrorists”, who remained a fugitive for more than 20 years, can be extradited to the US to face trial after he was arrested in Wales, a judge has ruled.

Daniel Andreas San Diego, 47, allegedly carried out two bombings in the San Francisco area in 2003, which were claimed by an animal rights group.

He was arrested in November 2024 at a property in a rural area next to woodland in Conwy in North Wales, where he had been living under the false identity Danny Webb.

A distinctive tattoo on his chest with the words “it only takes a spark” helped identify him as the fugitive.

He was the first alleged domestic terrorist added to the FBI’s most wanted list in 2009, alongside the likes of late al Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden.

Judge Samuel Goozee’s ruling at Westminster Magistrates’ Court in London on Friday stated that there is no bar to San Diego’s extradition – and that the home secretary will make a final decision, which is expected to be a formality.

San Diego has the right to appeal the decision at the High Court.

He fought extradition to the US, where his barrister Mark Summers KC said he could face a “90-year sentence” if convicted, at a series of hearings at Westminster Magistrates’ Court last year.

His lawyers argued he could not get a fair trial in Donald Trump‘s America, where the president had “engaged in a ‘purge'” of the US Department of Justice (DoJ) and “installed his former personal lawyers to positions of power”.

They said the high-profile and “notorious case” was “precisely the type of trial in which the current US presidential administration has shown themselves capable of, and intent on, direct interference”.

San Diego was first indicted in California in 2004, charged with two offences of causing damage by explosives, and possession of explosives.

More counts were added to a later indictment, including charges of “using or carrying an explosive device to commit a felony”.

On 28 August 2003, two bombs exploded about an hour apart on the campus of the Chiron biotechnology corporation in Emeryville, California.

Then, on 26 September 2003, one bomb strapped with nails exploded at the Shaklee nutritional products corporation in Pleasanton, California.

The bombings didn’t cause any injuries, but authorities said the biotechnology blast was meant to harm first responders.

A group called Revolutionary Cells-Animal Liberation Brigade claimed responsibility for the attacks, citing the firms’ ties to Huntingdon Life Sciences – a company targeted by animal rights activists over its work with experimental drugs on animals.

San Diego disappeared into a transit station on 6 October 2003, when the FBI had him under surveillance as he parked his car near downtown San Francisco.

The agency didn’t see him again but said there had been several sightings reported around the world.

A $250,000 (£199,000) reward was offered for information leading directly to the arrest of San Diego, who was born in Berkeley, California.

The FBI claimed he had ties to an animal rights extremist group, was known to follow a vegan diet, known to possess a handgun, and worked as a computer network specialist.

New Jersey election results: Progressive on verge of upset in Dem primary

0

NEWYou can now listen to Fox News articles!

A far-left candidate backed by progressive champions Sen. Bernie Sanders, I-Vt., and Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, D-N.Y, is close to pulling off an upset victory with votes still being counted in a Democratic congressional primary for a blue-leaning seat in New Jersey.

Analilia Mejia, a progressive organizer, has a slight lead – 486 votes out of more than 61,000 counted – over former Democratic Rep. Tom Malinowski in the battle for their party’s nomination in New Jersey’s 11th Congressional District.

Mejia and Malinowski are the leaders among a field of 11 Democratic candidates in the race to fill the seat left vacant after now-Gov. Mikie Sherrill stepped down after winning November’s gubernatorial election in the Garden State.

HOUSE GOP MAJORITY SHRINKS TO JUST ONE VOTE AS JOHNSON SWEARS IN NEW HOUSE DEMOCRAT

But Malinowski, an assistant Secretary of State in former President Barack Obama’s administration who later represented a neighboring congressional district in northern New Jersey from 2018 to 2022 before losing re-election, was considered the front-runner in the race heading into primary day.

The winner will face off with Randolph Mayor Joe Hathaway, the only Republican to file for the special election, which will be held on April 16.

The special election comes as Republicans cling to a razor-thin 218-214 majority in the House of Representatives.

Hathaway will be considered the underdog in the race.

Sherrill won re-election in the district in 2024 by 15 points, the same margin by which she carried the district in November’s gubernatorial showdown.

But then-Vice President Kamala Harris won the district by just eight points in the 2024 presidential election, giving the GOP some hopes of possibly flipping the seat.

The GOP may land a reinforcement in the House before the general election for the open seat in New Jersey is held.

JOHNSON WARNS HOUSE REPUBLICANS TO ‘STAY HEALTHY’ AS GOP MAJORITY SHRINKS TO THE EDGE

That’s because a special election is scheduled on March 10 in Georgia’s solidly red 14th Congressional District, in the race to succeed former GOP Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene. The MAGA firebrand and one-time top Trump House ally in early January stepped away from Congress a year before her term ended.

A whopping 22 candidates, including 17 Republicans, are running in the Georgia showdown.

According to Georgia state law, all the candidates will run on the same ballot. If no contender tops 50% of the vote, a runoff election between the top two finishers will take place on April 7.

WHO TRUJMP IS BACKING IN RACE TO REPLACE MARJORIE TAYLOR GREENE

Trump on Wednesday endorsed Lookout Mountain Judicial Circuit District Attorney Clay Fuller, a Republican, in the race.

Greene won re-election in 2024 to the seat by nearly 30 points and Trump carried the district, which is located in northwest Georgia, by 37 points.

Doug LaMalfa

There’s one more vacant seat in Congress, in California’s 1st Congressional District, following the recent unexpected death of Republican Rep. Doug LaMalfa.

A primary in the race to fill LaMalfa’s seat will be held on June 2, which is primary day in California. And the special general election will be held on Aug. 4.

The district, in northeastern California, is solidly Republican.

Himachal: Opposition enraged over MLA fund being stopped, expressed protest by submitting memorandum to Governor

0

Just before the beginning of the MLA priorities meetings for the financial year 2026-27, the politics of Himachal Pradesh has come to a boil. Even before the meetings starting from today, opposition BJP MLAs under the leadership of Leader of Opposition Jairam Thakur reached Lok Bhavan (Raj Bhavan) and submitted a memorandum to the Governor. The opposition has made serious allegations against the state government of withholding MLA Area Development Fund, discretionary funds and discriminating in the development works of opposition MLAs.

Funds halted from October 2025, development work stalled In the memorandum submitted to the Governor, Leader of Opposition Jairam Thakur strongly attacked the functioning of the government. He said that the state government has not released the MLA area development fund after October 2025. Budget Despite the provision in the Act, the government has released only two installments (Rs 55 lakh each), while the remaining amount has been withheld.

Jairam Thakur said, “This year, the natural disaster has caused huge devastation in the state. At such a time, it was extremely important to use the MLA funds for restoration and relief work, but due to stoppage of funds, the MLAs are facing great difficulty in fulfilling the promises made to the public.” Apart from this, due to non-availability of discretionary funds, immediate assistance to the poor, sick and disaster affected people is also being hampered, due to which the credibility of the public representatives is being questioned.

Opposition MLAs’ reluctance to make DPR

The opposition has accused the government of working against the spirit of “equal development”. BJP says that it has been a tradition in Himachal that MLAs register their preferences in the PWD and Jal Shakti Department. But for the last three years, neither the Detailed Project Report (DPR) of the priorities given by the opposition MLAs is being prepared nor are they being sent to NABARD for approval.

Demand for intervention from Governor

The BJP legislature party has demanded immediate intervention from the Governor. He has requested that instructions should be given to the government to immediately release the withheld MLA funds and discretionary funds. Also, arrangements should be made to prepare DPR of development priorities of opposition MLAs and send it to NABARD as soon as possible so that balanced development can be achieved in the state.

At the same time, the opposition has made it clear that they will participate in the special session on RDG and will continue to oppose the government’s policies both inside and outside the House.

An attempt to fly a pig proved costly, the drone got stuck in an electric wire, then the village was plunged into darkness for 10 hours!

In childhood, while playing ‘Parrot flies, Myna flies’, we used to laugh when we heard ‘Pig flies’, because it seemed impossible. But a farmer in China actually tried to fly a pig with a drone, which turned into an accident and the electricity of the entire village went out for about 10 hours.

There used to be something different about childhood games. While playing ‘Parrot flies, Myna flies’, when someone jokingly said ‘Pig flies’, everyone started laughing loudly, because we knew that it is impossible for a pig to fly. How can an animal fly in the sky without wings? It seemed like just a joke and a matter of imagination. But imagine, what if someone actually tries to throw a pig in the air? It sounds strange, doesn’t it? But a farmer in China did such a strange and dangerous experiment. Frustrated with the difficult mountain roads in his village, he devised a way to help a pig cross the road by flying it using a drone. Initially this idea seemed easy and fast to him, but within a few minutes this idea turned into a huge problem. The drone got entangled in high-voltage wires, the pig hung in the air and the entire village lost power for hours. This incident is now viral on social media and people are surprised as well as laughing after seeing it.

The farmer was troubled by the problem of hilly area
According to South China Morning Post, this incident happened on January 24 in Tongjiang County of Sichuan Province of China. The farmer’s village is situated amidst the mountains, where it is very difficult to transport animals by vehicles, so he thought of adopting a new method to quickly transport the pigs to the slaughterhouse. The farmer thought that with the help of a drone, the pig could be tied to a rope and taken away hanging in the air. He felt that this would save time and also reduce hard work. It was early morning and there was less light. As soon as the drone picked up the first pig, its rope got stuck in a nearby high-voltage power line.

Drone and pig hanging in the air
Within a few seconds the drone stopped and the pig got stuck in the air. The villagers were surprised to see this sight. Due to entanglement in the wires, the power line got damaged and the entire village lost electricity. People remained without electricity for about 10 hours. According to SCMP, the local electricity department was called after this accident. A team of 12 employees worked hard for hours to repair the line. The repair cost approximately 10,000 yuan (about Rs 1.8 lakh).

Video went viral on social media
The video of this incident quickly went viral on social media. People gave funny reactions to this layoff. Some people jokingly said, “Now even pigs have really started flying!” Many users called it a dangerous and stupid move. Police investigation revealed that the farmer flew the drone in a no-fly zone and also put excessive weight on the drone. If found guilty, he may be fined and action may also be taken.

New Delhi: After the defeat in the final of the 2003 World Cup, the Indian team was going through a phase of change. Team India was especially looking for a wicketkeeper who could not only keep but also bat fast in the middle order. During that period, many players were tried as wicketkeepers, in which names like Dinesh Karthik and Parthiv Patel became quite popular, but due to lack of consistency, they could not establish themselves in the team.

In this way, in December 2004, a player named Mahendra Singh Dhoni entered Team India. Dhoni got a chance to debut for Team India against Bangladesh in Chittagong, but in his debut match he was out without opening the account. However, who knew that a simple boy from Ranchi in Jharkhand (Bihar before 2000) would one day lead Team India to rule world cricket. Today, Ishan Kishan and Vaibhav Suryavanshi are doing something similar from the land of Bihar and Jharkhand.

Vaibhav Suryavanshi is making Bihar proud

14 year old Vaibhav Suryavanshi is continuously making waves in junior cricket for India. Be it an innings of 175 runs in the final of Under-19 World Cup 2026 or a stormy century for Rajasthan Royals in the Indian Premier League. Now, in whatever match Vaibhav takes the field, the fans just want to see his stormy batting.

Apart from junior cricket, Vaibhav Suryavanshi also represents Bihar team. Vaibhav: After a long time, such a cricketer has emerged from the state of Bihar, who has worked to give a new identity to his state cricket. Vaibhav Suryavanshi is a resident of Samastipur district of Bihar.

Ishaan Kishan, resident of Nalanda

Ishan Kishan is making waves in the Indian senior cricket team these days. Ishan Kishan, who returned to Team India after a long time, is echoing everywhere. Ishan Kishan is originally from Nalanda district of Bihar, but he has represented Jharkhand in domestic cricket. However, he has always kept himself associated with Bihar. In this way, like Mahendra Singh Dhoni, Ishan Kishan and Vaibhav Suryavanshi are bringing glory to Bihar and Jharkhand today.

Al Jazeera Sport takes a look at five of the top names at the tournament that will be hoping to lead their side to the 2026 final on March 8.

Abhishek Sharma – India

The world appears to be at the feet of Abhishek Sharma; indeed, it has appeared that way since he was signed by Delhi Daredevils in the Indian Premier League at the age of 17.

Now 25, the left-hander has established himself as one of the most feared T20 batters in world cricket – striking at nearly 200 in his 38 T20 international appearances on arrival at the tournament. The Punjab-born opener has yet to appear in Test or one-day international cricket for India, but has already recorded two centuries and eight fifties for his country in the shortest format.

Sikandar Raza – Zimbabwe

An elder statesman at the tournament, Sikandar Raza commands huge respect not only in Zimbabwe but also in Pakistan. Born in Punjab, the 39-year-old switched Asia for Africa with his family just after the turn of the century.

The right-handed batter, who also bowls both off and leg-break, made his debut for Zimbabwe in 2013 and has 152 appearances across all formats on arrival at the T20 World Cup. It is in the shortest format where he has achieved the most success, becoming a gun player for numerous T20 sides the world over.

Abrar Ahmed – Pakistan

Wrist spinners have long been regarded as the key to any successful T20 side and, in Abrar Ahmed, Pakistan have a player capable of turning a match on sixpence. The 27-year-old leg-break bowler only made his Test debut in 2022 and had to wait until 2024 to make his bow in both white-ball formats.

Then, 116 wickets for his country followed, including 46 in T20 internationals at an average of 17 with an economy just below seven. The greatest challenge for Abrar in his career has sadly been persistent back injuries, which slowed his early years and delayed his international debut. Both he and Pakistan will hope those problems are long behind him now.

Harry Brook – England

Arguably England’s most exciting talent, Harry Brook certainly has the ability to be their most explosive. The 26-year-old batter already has 134 caps for his country, with 13 centuries in that time, and claimed a T20 World Cup winners’ medal at the 2022 edition.

The right-hander was the first Englishman to score a triple century in Test cricket since Graham Gooch’s 333 against India in 1990. Brook’s effort came in Pakistan in 2024 and was achieved at nearly a run-a-ball. He has already represented three teams in the IPL and has 169 T20 appearances to his name in total, with three centuries and 16 fifties at a strike rate of 152.

Glenn Maxwell – Australia

Maxwell has long been the darling of white-ball cricket the world over. The best example of his incredible talent came when, severely hampered by injury, he dragged Australia into the semifinals of the 2023 Cricket World Cup with an unbeaten double century.

The 37-year-old had the nickname “The Big Show” long before that knock, and has been a near ever-present – and one of the highest earners – in the Indian Premier League. Maxwell arrives in India and Sri Lanka with 281 international appearances under his belt, and – even with age against him – one of cricket’s greatest game changers could well have another trick up his sleeve for Australia.
