Who: India vs United States
What: 2026 ICC T20 World Cup
Where: Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai, India
When: Saturday, February 7, at 7pm (13:30 GMT)
The 2026 edition of the ICC T20 World Cup begins in India and Sri Lanka on Saturday, with holders and favourites India among the main attractions on the opening day.
Pakistan play Nepal in the first match of the day in Colombo, before attention turns to Mumbai as the co-hosts face the United States in a repeat of the group stage match at the 2024 edition.
The final game of the opening day pits the West Indies against Scotland, the team that replaced Bangladesh following their controversial expulsion from the tournament.
The eyes of the cricketing world will be on India, though, with their remarkable run of form, and whether they will lay down an early marker or whether the US team can provide what would surely be the competition’s greatest upset.
Al Jazeera Sport takes a closer look at the game.
India captain Suryakumar Yadav admitted “there will be nerves” when India open their T20 World Cup campaign in front of more than 30,000 fanatical home supporters in Mumbai, but pledged to give them “entertainment”.
Suryakumar is only too aware that India, the top-ranked T20 team in the world, are overwhelming favourites to retain their title.
But he said his team will try to feed off the positive vibes from a billion-plus home supporters and not be crushed by the huge weight of expectation.
“When you’re playing at home, there is always an added pressure. I’m not running away from the fact,” Suryakumar told reporters in advance of India’s final training session on Friday.
“To be honest, there will be nerves, there will be pressure, but if you see the positive side of it, there’ll be a lot of cheer around.
“There’s so many people coming to watch in the stadiums, I’ve told my boys the same thing, 30,000-35,000 people coming and so many watching at home.
“Let’s give them a good time. Let’s give them entertainment.”
Not only are India the defending champions, following their victory against South Africa at the 2024 edition, but they are also the joint-record winners of the T20 World Cup.
The Indian side won their inaugural event in 2007, beating Pakistan in the final, but that made for a long wait for the second win at the last edition.
England and the West Indies have both also recorded two tournament wins.

The US cricket team made their debut at an ICC World Cup when they co-hosted the 2024 edition with the West Indies.
It led to the greatest cricketing upset of all time, when they beat Pakistan in the group stage with a stunning super over victory.
India know that their opening opponents are a rising force in cricket, and Suryakumar said no team would be taken lightly.
“I don’t see any weak teams in the competition. All 20 teams are very much capable of playing some good cricket,” he said.
“In this format, one or two batters can make a difference. Or it takes one or two bowlers to have a good 24 balls on any given day.
“So we will have to play the same way as we’ve been playing against all the teams.”
India’s batters are smashing out the runs in the shortest format, with the side not dropping below 215 in each of their last three matches (two against New Zealand and one against South Africa).
In the fifth and final match of New Zealand’s tour of India, they hit 271-5, before hitting the South Africans for 240-5 in their final warm-up game in advance of the T20 World Cup.
Suryakumar’s side have won seven of their last nine completed T20 matches.
The captain said there were fitness doubts over fast bowler Harshit Rana, who was injured in a warm-up game on Wednesday.
Rana bowled just one over before leaving the field clutching his knee.
“Harshit Rana has not been ruled out yet; the physios are assessing him, but it does not look good,” said Suryakumar, fearing that the paceman’s World Cup could be over before it starts.
“If we miss him, we will definitely miss him.”
The US team will be shorn of one of its biggest names, with Aaron Jones suspended due to multiple corruption charges.
The 31-year-old, who was born in Barbados, will miss the entire tournament following the news of five alleged breaches.
Suryakumar Yadav (captain), Abhishek Sharma, Sanju Samson (wicketkeeper), Tilak Varma, Hardik Pandya, Shivam Dube, Axar Patel, Rinku Singh, Jasprit Bumrah, Harshit Rana, Arshdeep Singh, Kuldeep Yadav, Varun Chakaravarthy, Washington Sundar, Ishan Kishan (wicketkeeper)

Lord Peter Mandelson’s political career appears to be over after fresh releases from the Epstein files revealed the depth of his friendship with the paedophile financier.
The Labour veteran, 72, was sacked from his US ambassadorial role in September last year due to his ties with Epstein.
Lord Mandelson’s name has appeared in some of the more than three million pages related to Epstein in the latest release by the US Department of Justice.
He has resigned from the Labour Party to avoid causing “further embarrassment” – and also succumbed to pressure on 3 February to step down from the House of Lords.
A criminal investigation has also been launched into allegations that he leaked market-sensitive information to Epstein when he was business secretary.
Here’s everything we know from the Epstein files.
Epstein ‘tipped off’ about EU bailout
The emails appeared to show conversations between the pair about political matters while Lord Mandelson was serving as business secretary and the de-facto deputy prime minister in 2009, in Gordon Brown’s government.
Documents indicate Epstein was sent internal discussions from the heart of the UK government after the global financial crisis.
That includes emails in which Lord Mandelson may have given Epstein advance notice of a €500bn EU bank bailout in 2010 – something that could have been used by someone to gain an advantage in the financial markets.
He was emailed by Epstein, who wrote: “Sources tell me 500 b euro bailout , almost complete [sic].”
He then appears to reply: “Sd be announced tonight”.
Epstein then asks if he is home, to which Mandelson replies: “Just leaving No10… will call.”
The €500bn deal was approved the next day as governments tried to pull the euro currency out of a crisis.
Bankers’ bonuses policy
Other emails appear to show Lord Mandelson telling Epstein he was “trying hard” to change policy on bankers’ bonuses at his request. This was just three months after the American had given his husband money.
In emails in December 2009, Lord Mandelson appears to agree to try to change government policy on taxing the bonuses.
Coming 18 months after the financial crash and subsequent state rescue of banks, the subject was highly contentious.
On 9 December 2009, the then-chancellor Alistair Darling announced a 50% “super tax” on bonuses, intended to prevent pay being inflated by taxpayer-funded bailouts.
In an email exchange on 15 December, Epstein asked Lord Mandelson if the policy could be changed: “any [sic] real chance of making the tax only on the cash portion of the bankers bonus,” he wrote.
Lord Mandelson replied: “Trying hard to amend as I explained to Jes last night. Treasury digging in but I am on case.”
Epstein responds: “let me know before jes please,,”.
“Ok. They are not being helpful…” is the reply.
“they jpm. or they treasury,” asks Epstein.
“Treasury” Mandelson replied.
“Jes” may be a reference to Jes Staley, the former Barclays boss, who in 2009 was head of JP Morgan’s investment bank and a close associate of Epstein’s.
The Metropolitan Police has said it’s received “a number of reports relating to alleged misconduct in a public office” following the release of these latest files.
Underwear photos
Images in the file drop also show Lord Mandelson in his underwear, talking to a woman wearing a bathrobe.
There are several versions of essentially the same image.
A spokesperson for Lord Mandelson told Sky News: “No one can say who or where the photo was taken.
“Lord Mandelson has absolutely no idea or indeed whether it has any connection to Epstein at all.”
Sky News investigations have determined these pictures were taken at Epstein’s Paris apartment.
Payments from Epstein
The latest documents suggest Epstein paid Mandelson $75,000 (£55,000) between 2003 and 2004.
Apparent bank statements record three payments of $25,000, two of which went to accounts apparently naming Lord Mandelson as the holder, with the other going to his partner, Reinaldo Avila da Silva, listing Lord Mandelson as a beneficiary.

It’s unclear if the payments ever made it to the accounts, and Mandelson said he had “no record and recollection of ever receiving these sums” and would be doing his own investigations.
Lord Mandelson has also said in a statement: “I was wrong to believe Epstein following his conviction and to continue my association with him afterwards.
“I apologise unequivocally for doing so to the women and girls who suffered.”
Epstein ‘sent course money to Mandelson’s husband’
In 2009, Epstein appears to have sent thousands of pounds to Lord Mandelson’s husband to help pay for osteopathy course fees.
Mr Avila da Silva sent Epstein an email in September that year about “my osteo course expenses, incl fee, anatomical models, lap top if you can help me with this”.
He said the annual fee was £3,225 and thanked Epstein for “anything you can help me with”.
Epstein replied the same day: “I will wire your loan amount immediated’y. [sic]”
In a later email, Mr Avila da Silva followed up “regarding the £10,000 with my personal bank details” and asked “if this amount includes my school fees or if the amount of £3,225 (school fee) will be sent directly to the school itself”.
Epstein told him: “includedd. [sic]”
Mr Avila da Silva later sent him another message confirming receipt of the cash: “Just a brief note to thank you for the money which arrived in my account this morning.”
Lord Mandelson’s representatives have been contacted for comment.
He has previously said: “I was wrong to believe Epstein following his conviction [in 2008 for procuring a child for prostitution and of soliciting a prostitute] and to continue my association with him afterwards. I apologise unequivocally for doing so to the women and girls who suffered.”
And in an interview with The Times carried, Lord Mandelson referred to a “handful of misguided historical emails, which I deeply regret sending”.
On other claims, Lord Mandelson questioned the authenticity of the documents, citing false claims he had a US social security number, questionable US-dollar cheque payments into UK banks, incorrect beneficiary details, and multiple basic errors in dates, spelling and formatting.

SAN FRANCISCO – As long as Christian McCaffrey is on the field, he’s going to show out.
The San Francisco 49ers star running back was the only non-quarterback to be an MVP finalist, and was also in the running for his second Offensive Player of the Year Award in three years after putting up 2,126 scrimmage yards and scoring 17 total touchdowns.
In most cases, that should surprise nobody, but given McCaffrey’s devastating 2024 season, when he missed 13 games due to Achilles tendinitis and a knee injury, “what if” was in the conversation.

“Yeah, you know, I think last year was tough. There was a lot of uncertainty for me the whole offseason just working extremely hard day and night to try to come back to where I needed to be,” McCaffrey told Fox News Digital on Radio Row. “I really just thank God. I feel very fortunate that I played in every game. You know, that’s something I don’t take for granted ever anymore. And I feel blessed to be able to come out of the season healthy.”
McCaffrey became just the second player ever to be nominated for MVP, Offensive Player of the Year, and Comeback Player of the Year in the same season. He was also voted by fans as one of FedEx’s Air & Ground Players of the Year.
“This is a cool award. Voted for by the fans, which makes it really cool, and it’s been going on for 23 years now, so it’s one of the longest NFL awards. So, I’m super thankful,” McCaffrey said. “They’re also giving $15,000 to Feeding America, a local food bank here in San Francisco. So, you know, getting an award, being able to give back a little bit, it’s pretty cool.”

McCaffrey won the Comeback Player of the Year on Thursday night given last year’s injuries and this year’s rousing success. Given his age, many were worried that it was the beginning of the end.
McCaffrey, too, was admittedly nervous, but that is not exactly a new feeling for him.
“I’ve been worrying since I was in high school. Most of my mindset is just worrying. You know, part of what drives me is just that, you know, that anxiety of not living up to my potential or not being able to play. So, that’s definitely something that’s always in my head transparently,” McCaffrey said. “But I think that’s the beauty of training. Whenever that’s kind of how you start, and then you train and train and train and do all the things you can to get to where you want to be, which will instill confidence that, you know what? I trust my training. I know that I can do this now. feel good about where I’m at.”

McCaffrey will be 30 years old by the time he plays meaningful football again, but after nearly another 1,000-1,000 yard season, there’s not much to worry about.

Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro’s team is disputing the Department of Homeland Security‘s (DHS) assertions about the immigration status of a semi-truck driver involved in a crash that left four dead in Indiana. The driver was taken into U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) custody after a detainer was placed on him.
DHS said the driver, Bekzhan Beishekeev, a 30-year-old national of Kyrgyzstan, came into the U.S. “illegally” using the controversial CBP One app and was later issued a commercial driver’s license (CDL) in Pennsylvania. The department confirmed to Fox News that Beishekeev entered the country on Dec. 19, 2023, at the Nogales, Ariz., port of entry, using the CBP One app and was released into the U.S. via parole by the Biden administration.
“Not only was Bekzhan Beishekeev released into our country by the Biden administration using the CBP One app, but he was also given a commercial driver’s license by Governor Shapiro’s Pennsylvania. These decisions have had deadly consequences and led to the death of four innocent people in Indiana on Tuesday,” DHS Assistant Secretary Tricia McLaughlin said in a statement.
McLaughlin then called on “sanctuary” governors to stop issuing CDLs to illegal immigrants “before another American gets killed.”

Shapiro’s office argues that Beishekeev had legal status when he was issued the license in July 2025 and that he could still be eligible under a DHS database to receive one.
“Every person who applies for a non-domiciled commercial driver’s license issued by PennDOT must provide proof of identify and proof of their legal presence in the United States. That information is verified by the federal Systematic Alien Verification for Entitlements (SAVE) database, administered by Kristi Noem and the United States Department of Homeland Security,” Shapiro spokesperson Alex Peterson said in a statement provided to Fox News.
“The individual in question had legal status in Kristi Noem’s database when the license was issued in July 2025 and still shows as eligible to receive a license as of today. Kristi Noem should focus on minding the shop in her own agency, as her incompetence and operational failures seem to be matching the scale of her moral failures as the Secretary of Homeland Security,” Peterson added.

The deadly crash occurred on Feb. 3 at approximately 4:00 p.m. when Beishekeev was driving eastbound on Indiana’s State Route 67 and allegedly failed to break for a slowed semi-truck in front of him, according to DHS and Indiana State Police. Beishekeev then allegedly swerved into oncoming traffic and slammed into a van carrying 15 passengers. Four people were killed in the crash. DHS said the fatal incident is being investigated by the Indiana State Police, the Jay County Sheriff’s Department and the Jay County Coroner’s Office.
DHS and the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) have warned about the dangers of CDL issuing practices in several states following a series of fatal crashes allegedly involving illegal immigrants.

In its statement on Beishekeev, DHS noted that ICE had previously arrested another illegal immigrant who was issued a CDL in Pennsylvania.
Akhror Bozorov, 31, is an Uzbek national who DHS said was wanted in his country of origin for belonging to a terrorist organization. Bozorov was arrested in Kansas on Nov. 9 while working as a commercial truck driver, using a CDL issued in Pennsylvania, according to DHS. Bozorov was allegedly granted work authorization in January 2024 under the Biden administration.
