Lightning may have sparked fire destroying top US marine science lab, officials say | Florida

0

Officials are investigating whether a huge fire that destroyed a top marine science laboratory at the University of South Florida may have been caused by a lightning strike.

Despite a massive response from local fire crews the Marine Science Laboratory building was completely destroyed after the blaze began on Saturday.

Moez Limayem, the USF president, said that lightning storms in the area were being looked at as a possible cause of the enormous and devastating blaze at the advanced scientific institute.

“St Pete Fire and Rescue said there was lightning reported in the area around at the time the fire started, but the cause remains under investigation,” Limayem said in a statement.

Michael Lewis, the St Petersburg fire chief, said more than 60 units and about 200 firefighters responded to the scene.

“We will rebuild stronger than ever and my commitment is to do everything we can to move quickly to ensure that we have the best possible facilities to support our world class students, faculty and staff,” Limayem added.

Sudanese woman and 16-year-old girl reportedly die trying to cross Channel | Immigration and asylum

0

Two female Sudanese asylum seekers have died trying to cross the Channel in the early hours of Sunday morning, off the coast of Boulogne.

According to some reports, one was a teenager aged 16 and the other a woman in her 20s. They were found dead in the boat, which had run aground on the beach of Neufchâtel-Hardelot, according to Christophe Marx, the secretary general of the Pas-de-Calais Prefecture.

There were approximately 82 people on board. Marx said that the victims had been found “dead inside the boat”.

Three survivors are reported to be in a critical condition due to burns caused by a mix of engine fuels and sea water. Fourteen others have less severe injuries, with five of them taken to hospital.

A major rescue operation was launched when dozens of people tried to scramble on to the dinghy, described as a taxi boat.

Seventeen people were rescued at sea and taken to Boulogne-sur-Mer, and another 65 remained onboard until the boat ran aground. The fatalities and injuries occurred after the engine failed and the boat started to drift.

A judicial investigation into the incident has been launched by Boulogne-sur-Mer’s public prosecutor’s office.

Map highlighting location of Neufchâtel-Hardelot on French coast

Today’s fatalities bring the death toll so far this year to at least eight, including two deaths a month ago and four more three weeks ago. At least 29 people died trying to cross the Channel last year.

The death toll raises questions about the latest three-year deal between the UK and France signed last month. The UK is paying the French government £662m to stop small boats crossing the Channel and prevent loss of life. France is increasing the number of police and gendarmes patrolling the coast, while the British government is increasing payments to France by 40%. It has been reported that French patrols will intervene only to stop boats with fewer than 20 people onboard, as they say there is a risk to life if they stop severely overcrowded boats.

In a statement issued on Sunday morning about the rescue operation, The Maritime Prefect for the Channel and the North Sea said that, given the structural fragility of the boats, which are very overcrowded, French authorities do not force people trying to cross the Channel to board state rescue vessels, in order to avoid endangering their lives in the event of a shipwreck.

GB News has reported that more than 550 people have crossed the Channel in small boats so far this weekend, although Sunday’s official daily crossings figures have not yet been published by the Home Office. Government data published on Sunday morning confirms that 325 people crossed the Channel in six boats on Saturday.

One asylum seeker returned to France under the “one in one out” deal told the Guardian he was in a French government hostel in northern France along with many asylum seeker families, and that Home Office officials had come to the accommodation a few days ago, warning people not to cross the Channel. Hours later, some of the families left the hostel and are thought to have reached the UK earlier this weekend. Home Office sources said they would not comment on operational matters. They added that their priority was to break the people smugglers’ business model.

Before the latest deaths in the Channel, an open letter from more than 70 refugee NGOs was circulated, coordinated by the Humans for Rights Network and Project Play with signatories including Médecins Sans Frontières, the Joint Council for the Welfare of Immigrants and Safe Passage International. It called for a public inquiry into how UK money was being spent on trying to stop the boats.

A Home Office spokesperson said. “We are deeply saddened to hear about the deaths in French waters today.

“Every death in the Channel is a tragedy and a stark reminder of the dangers posed by criminal gangs exploiting vulnerable people for profit. We will continue working relentlessly with the French and our partners overseas to prevent these perilous journeys.”

She went on to tell Hudson that she enjoyed working at the fast food joint because she “loved earning a paycheck” and “not having to ask for money” from everyone.

The fast food chain not only gave Stefani her first job, but was also the birthplace of the band that made her famous. It was while working at Dairy Queen that she met John Spence, who formed No Doubt with Stefani’s brother Eric.

Spence was the original lead singer of the band, with Stefani singing backup. However, after he died by suicide in 1987, Stefani took over as the band’s frontman.

That was hard.”

“The hardest thing is being on headset and having someone at the window while you’re taking an order, typing it in, and giving the correct change at the same time,” she explained. “So you’re talking to two or three different people at once, and you’re making drinks.”

“I think I was really good at it though, because I would really spread everything out to the edges evenly, the right amount of everything,” she said. “And now when I go to Subway and someone just kind of throws it on right in the middle, like puts a ton of sauce there, it just kills me.

She added that she doesn’t really “go that often anymore because I watch them make it badly.”

Israel threatens Gaza war resumption to force disarmament as ‘truce’ frays | Gaza News

0

Palestinian factions reject US-backed plans linking humanitarian aid to weapons surrender, demanding a political horizon.

In the shattered neighbourhoods of Khan Younis and Deir el-Balah in the Gaza Strip, the roar of Israeli drones and the concussive thud of controlled demolitions are daily reminders that the war has never really ended.

Despite a “ceasefire” in place since October, families continue to pull bodies from the rubble. According to local medical sources, 828 Palestinians have been killed since the “truce” began. Now, families in Gaza are bracing for a renewed offensive as Israeli officials threaten to tear up the fragile agreement to force a surrender.

In Jerusalem, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu abruptly cancelled a scheduled security cabinet meeting on Sunday, opting instead for smaller consultations. Simultaneously, the military has ramped up pressure to resume hostilities. A senior official in the Israeli military’s General Staff told Channel 15 that an additional round of fighting was “almost inevitable”, citing the refusal of Hamas to surrender its weapons and the alleged “failure” of the International Stabilization Force, a multinational body deployed under the recent truce framework to oversee security and manage the ceasefire’s implementation.

Israel’s Army Radio reported that on the ground, the military has steadily been enlarging the territory it controls in the besieged enclave. By gradually pushing the “ceasefire”-established “Yellow Line” westwards, Israeli forces have expanded their territorial control to 59 percent of the Strip, regularising their occupation through daily violations of the “ceasefire” and moving additional troops from the Lebanese front into Gaza and the occupied West Bank.

The ‘political surrender’ trap

In Cairo, mediators are applying intense pressure on Palestinian factions to accept a new framework pushed by Nikolay Mladenov, the high representative for the United States-backed Board of Peace.

Abdul Jabbar Said, a member of the Hamas political bureau, told the Palestinian website Ultra Palestine that Mladenov has tried to enforce a roadmap that would require the complete disarmament of Hamas within 281 days over five stages. The plan, which builds on United States President Donald Trump’s 20-point vision, strictly conditions humanitarian aid, reconstruction and the opening of crossings into Gaza on the phased handover of weapons. Analysts and Palestinian officials have previously told Al Jazeera this framework is designed to enforce the complete “political surrender” of the armed groups.

Analysts noted the strategy aims to turn the newly formed National Committee for the Administration of Gaza (NGAC), a technocratic body established to govern civilian affairs and oversee reconstruction in the enclave, into a proxy security arm for the occupation.

Said confirmed to Ultra Palestine that a unified front of Palestinian factions — including Hamas, Palestinian Islamic Jihad and the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine — has universally rejected the disarmament prerequisite. Instead, the groups insisted on the full implementation of the first phase of the “ceasefire”, which Israel has repeatedly violated by blocking the agreed-upon entry of 600 aid trucks daily.

Linking security to statehood

Wissam Afifa, a political analyst in Gaza, told Al Jazeera that Hamas is navigating the diplomatic pressure by linking security arrangements directly to comprehensive political rights.

“The resistance insists that disarmament is tied to the ambition of establishing a Palestinian state and a complete end to the occupation,” Afifa said. He noted that the US and Israel are trying to decouple the issue of weapons from any political horizon — meaning a guaranteed, diplomatic path toward Palestinian independence and sovereignty — turning humanitarian relief into a tool for blackmail.

Military exhaustion and smoke screens

The drumbeat of war in Gaza may also be a tactical distraction from Israeli strategic failures elsewhere, analysts said. Mamoun Abu Amer, an expert on Israeli affairs, told Al Jazeera that the threats are a “smoke screen” designed to extort mediators and salvage Netanyahu’s political standing before the October elections.

Abu Amer highlighted that resuming the war would spell the collapse of the flagship US peace initiative, a move Netanyahu can ill afford while seeking coordination with Washington against Iran.

Furthermore, the Israeli military is buckling under the strain of multifront conflicts. Citing former military operations chief Israel Ziv, Abu Amer noted that the army is deeply exhausted, with reservists serving an average of 80 days a year in 2026. Opening a renewed front in Gaza while the crisis in southern Lebanon remains an “open wound”, Abu Amer said, would present a strategic nightmare for the Israeli establishment.

For the Palestinians trapped in the enclave, the geopolitical wrangling offers little respite. According to medical data released on Saturday, the death toll since the war began has reached at least 72,608. With three more Palestinians killed by Israeli strikes on Sunday afternoon alone, the people of Gaza remain caught between the creeping reality of endless occupation and the looming shadow of another devastating war.

Jodie Sweetin says she once received a 1-cent ‘Full House’ residual check

NEWYou can now listen to Fox News articles!

Despite the mega success behind the beloved 90s sitcom “Full House,” Jodie Sweetin’s residual checks aren’t exactly “reliable.”

During an appearance on the “McBride Rewind” podcast, the 44-year-old actress — who earned stardom from her role as Stephanie Tanner during the show’s entire eight-season run from 1987 to 1995, then again in the spinoff “Fuller House” from 2016 to 2020 — shared the shocking amount she received from her latest residual check.

“I got a one-cent check the other day. No, there’s no syndication anymore because it’s all in streaming. Who gets paid for that? Nobody gets paid for that,” she said.

“Sure, in my 20s, there would be money, but not reliable,” she continued. “You don’t know how much it’s going to be or how often they’re going to run the show. So, sometimes you’re like, ‘Oh, cool. That was nice.’ And then sometimes you’re like, ‘All right, well, there’s a nice dinner out.’ “

“You just kind of don’t know. So, it’s not something you can rely on,” Sweetin added. “I always say, people think I live some extravagant life. I’m like, ‘Honey, I drive my 2023 used Hyundai Sonata that I love. I rent my house. I have credit cards that are maxed out.’ I live a normal life,” she explained. “And yeah, there are moments when you’re like, ‘This is going well,’ and there are times when you’re like, ‘I need a day job.'”

Once “Full House” wrapped in the mid-90s, Sweetin previously said she went through an identity crisis.

“I was all over the place. I think that’s why I found stimulants. I would be more sober than anyone else in the room. I was looking for a way to make my brain work better,” she said during an episode of “The Skinny Confidential” podcast in 2025.

“I knew for a very long time that I was heading down a road where it was either going to be jail, institutions or death,” she said. “I was getting very close. I did not think I would see my 30th birthday the way I was going in my mid-20s …life changed. I got married again and quickly found out I was pregnant and was like, ‘Okay this is what we’re doing.'”

“I haven’t had a perfect journey, but that was the thing that changed everything,” she said of her first pregnancy. “Like party time is done.”

These days, the actress and activist said she would gladly reprise her role if the opportunity arose.

“I will never say never to anything. And you know, if I got to come back in another 20 years and work with these people again, who I’ve known for my entire life, yeah, I would totally do that,” she said on the “McBride Rewind” podcast.

“I love what ‘Full House’ has done. I love what it has created. I love what it means to people. And I think as I’ve gotten to be an adult and live a little more life, I understand just how important it is to have that thing that connects you to your younger, safer self, and I know thatFull House’ does that. So, I’m thrilled to continue to do that in whatever way I can.”

Republicans accuse Sherrod Brown of lying about his immigration record

NEWYou can now listen to Fox News articles!

Republicans are calling out Democratic Senate primary candidate Sherrod Brown for being disingenuous on illegal immigration just days before Tuesday’s Ohio primary election.

“I support closing the border to people so they just can’t cross the border at will, but I also say we, of course, should be deporting people that have committed a crime, surely,” Brown said in an interview last month, prompting reviews of his voting record to the contrary.

That remark has raised concern about Brown trying to rewrite his voting record that showed longtime opposition to border security and deportation of criminal aliens since the first Trump administration.

Brown served in the Senate for three terms (2007-2025), nearly two full decades, before losing in 2024 to Sen. Bernie Moreno, R-Ohio. Now, Brown is seeking the seat of Sen. Jon Husted, R-Ohio, who was appointed to Vice President JD Vance’s seat at the start of the second Trump administration.

MAGA-OUSTED DEM SENATOR FROM KEY SWING STATE LAUNCHES COMEBACK CAMPAIGN AFTER LOSING SEAT IN 2024: REPORT

Former Sen. Sherrod Brown, D-Ohio, made recent comments that do not align with his voting record in the Senate or House for the past 30-plus years. (Bill Clark/CQ-Roll Call, Inc)

Brown had been squarely on the side of the left against President Donald Trump’s border security and enforcement actions as a senator. Not only did he vote at least 10 times to protect federal funding for sanctuary cities from his time in the House in 2001 through his third Senate term in 2024, he has also:

  • Co-sponsored the 2019 End Mass Deportation Act, which sought to rescind Trump’s executive order to prioritize deporting criminal illegals and withhold funding for sanctuary cities.
  • Voted against ensuring ICE has “sufficient resources to detain and deport a higher number of illegal aliens who have been convicted of a crime.”
  • Voted against funding to stop criminal aliens from securing amnesty.
  • Voted to stop funding for deportation of criminal aliens in 2001.

Brown’s voting record shows a discrepancy between his latest comments and his past votes and public positions.

Brown has repeatedly opposed construction of a southern border wall “that doesn’t work,” calling the idea “stupid,” “wrong” and “ludicrous.” In the past he has voted:

Fox News Digital reached out to Brown’s campaign for comment, but they did not immediately respond.

The Ohio Senate race figures to be a very competitive one this summer, drawing massive campaign dollars from both sides in the pursuit of the Senate majority, with immigration remaining a top issue.

“This November, Ohioans will have a clear choice between the past and the future,” Husted campaign manager Drew Thompson told Signal Cleveland, which reported a $1 million ad campaign for his Senate race this week, despite running unopposed in the primary. “Jon Husted is getting an early start by taking his story directly to voters who are ready for a fresh, common-sense approach in Washington.”

Brown’s 32-year record of voting for sanctuary cities and illegal immigration will come back to haunt him in the state, Thompson added in a statement.

“After shocking Ohioans in 2024 by claiming he only hears about illegal immigration from the far Right, Sherrod Brown is now desperate to return to Washington and continue the same Biden-era open border policies he supported for 32 years,” the statement read. “Jon Husted, on the other hand, is working to clean up Sherrod Brown’s mess by funding border security, supporting border agents, and standing for the rule of law.”

Ohio is one of three races considered a toss-up by The Cook Political Report. The re-election campaign of Sen. Susan Collins, R-Maine, and the open Michigan seat vacated by retiring Sen. Gary Peters, D-Mich., being the other two.

Senate seats in Alaska (lean GOP), Georgia (Sen. Jon Ossoff, D-Ga.), North Carolina (lean Democrat) and New Hampshire (lean Democrat) are the other close races drawing attention and campaign dollars.

“Sherrod Brown’s lies aren’t going to trick Ohioans,” NRSC regional press secretary Nick Puglia said in a statement. “They know Brown has fought for over half a century alongside liberals like Kamala Harris to open our borders and protect dangerous criminal illegals from deportation.”
