Chief Justice of India (CJI) Surya Kant arrived in Ladakh on Friday on his first official visit. This is the first visit of any sitting CJI to Ladakh after it became a Union Territory. On reaching Leh, he was given a grand welcome by Lieutenant Governor Vinay Kumar Saxena and Chief Justice of Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh High Court Arun Palli. Guard of honor was given at the Air Force station.
Justice Surya Kant will inaugurate the newly constructed District Court complexes in Leh and Kargil on March 28 and 29 respectively. The office of Ladakh Legal Services Authority will also be inaugurated. These initiatives are expected to significantly improve access to justice through modern and state-of-the-art facilities in the region.
According to officials, the CJI will visit the forward areas and talk to the soldiers deployed on the border. This step will take forward the resolutions of the Northern Sector Conference held in Srinagar in July 2025 which emphasized on ensuring constitutional justice for defense personnel and tribal communities. This visit is being considered an important step towards strengthening judicial access in remote and strategically important areas like Ladakh.
Mega legal services camp organized
Administrative officials said that this visit symbolizes our commitment to strengthen the judicial framework and implement an inclusive justice system at the grassroots level in challenging geographical areas like Ladakh. A mega legal services camp and awareness program is also being organized during this visit, so that the local population can be made aware of their legal rights.
