New Delhi. T20 World Cup 2026 co-host team Sri Lanka is out of the tournament. His journey ended with defeat in his second Super-8 match against New Zealand. Sri Lanka was defeated by England in the first Super-8 match. This is the fifth consecutive T20 World Cup, in which the Sri Lankan team has not been able to reach the semi-finals. Last time in 2014, Sri Lanka won the tournament by making it to the knockout matches. Being out of the Super-8 group as host is no less than a shock for Sri Lankan cricket and their fans. When Sri Lanka was eliminated, the pain of their former captain and legend Kumar Sangakkara was also expressed. While posting on social media, Sangakkara wrote that this is a very difficult time for the team and their fans.

Sangakkara wrote in his ex-post, ‘There is a lot of sadness and disappointment all around. Fans are devastated, disappointed and even angry. The players are also very hurt from inside. I myself have been a part of such a dressing room, so I know how difficult this time is. All this comes with the responsibility of playing for the country. Representing our country and people is both a burden and a great honor.

Kumar Sangakkara’s pain spills over.

Since winning the T20 World Cup in 2014, Sri Lanka has not been able to reach the semi-finals even once. Sangakkara was a part of that golden era of Sri Lanka, when between 2009 and 2014, the team reached the semi-finals four consecutive times. In 2009 and 2012, the team was successful in reaching the finals and then two years later, the team was successful in winning the T20 World Cup title in 2014.

Sangakkara not only expressed sympathy, but also directly questioned the team’s repeated mistakes and failure to adapt to the changing demands of modern cricket. This veteran further wrote, ‘Now a lot of work needs to be done at every level so that we can get back on the right path. It is not possible for us to keep making the same mistakes again and again and expect different results. World cricket has changed very rapidly, but we have not been able to change ourselves accordingly. If we do not make changes in time, there is a danger of being left behind.
