Heat caused havoc in Europe, more than 62 thousand deaths due to heatwave in a year, warning is giving experts

Europe faced another horrific heat in the year 2024, in which more than 62 thousand people died only due to heat. According to a report published in the prestigious medical journal ‘Nature Medicine’ on 22 September, 2025, the figure is about 23.6% more than 2023 last year.

The study is based on data from 654 regions of 32 countries in Europe, including the heat between 1 June to 30 September 2024. Scientists say that this is the third consecutive year when the number of deaths due to heat in Europe has been very worrying. According to the report, only 62,700 people died due to heat in the year 2024.

The most scorching heat in the history of Europe

It was reported in the report that due to the effect of heat, the mortality rate of women was 46.7% higher than men. At the same time, in the elderly of 75 years and above, the death rate was found to be 323% higher than heat. According to the European Union’s Copernicus Climate Change Service, it was the scorching heat in the history of Europe in 2024.

According to the report of Barcelona Institute for Global Health, known as ISglobal, there have been a total of 1,81,000 deaths due to heat in 2022, 2023 and 2024. Experts say that this number may increase further in the future due to climate change. Research writer Tomas Janos said that the number of deaths is telling us that it should start to keep pace with it.

Most deaths due to heat in southern Europe

According to the European Union’s Copernic Climate Change Service, the heat of 2024 in Europe was the highest temperature summer ever. Two-thirds of the estimated deaths due to heat have occurred in southern Europe, as the elderly have the highest population. However, the figures of 2025 were not included in this study.

According to Italy’s Emergency Medical Society, the patients who were already weak and facing many diseases had to suffer more. Gerardo Scheche, an official of the European Environment Agency, says that the data related to heat need to do long -term work to improve the infrastructure and cold access to Europe.
