As convenient as the internet world is, it is also becoming equally dark and scary. A recent report by the ‘Independent Anti-Slavery Commissioner (IASC)’ has shocked the entire world. This report claims that in today’s digital age, thousands of women are being sold on online websites like ‘pizza’. These websites have become such a weapon for criminals, where they deal with women without any fear and earn crores of rupees from their misery. The most scary thing is that there are no strict arrangements to prevent children from accessing these ‘pimping websites’, due to which even innocent people are in danger. Commissioner Eleanor Lyon found in her investigation that these websites have become dens of complete exploitation.

Sharing her pain, one victim said, “I got tattoos done on my body so that if a customer kills me, at least my body can be identified.” Another woman said that it is a matter of shame for the society that men are going out and buying women like they order pizza. According to the report, the commissioner’s office analyzed around 63,000 advertisements on 12 such websites and found that 6 out of 10 advertisements had clear signs of trafficking and exploitation. On these websites, criminals control many women simultaneously. Customers come here hiding their identities and choose women as a ‘product’. The surprising thing is that in just one month, more than 4 crore people visited these 12 websites.

In many cases, criminals themselves talk to customers in the name of women and finalize deals, while those women do not even know what promises are being made in their name. The victims told that there is nothing in the name of security on these platforms. If a woman refuses to meet a customer, she is given rape and death threats. Since last year, there has been a demand to close these websites. UK Security Minister Jess Phillips warned, “We know what these sites are doing and we are now coming after them.” Such laws are being brought in the Parliament which will enable the courts to suspend these websites. A survivor named Mia de Faoit said that this is a ‘modern slave market’, where you can choose a woman of any age or race as per your choice, like a ‘supermarket’.

‘TARA’, a Glasgow-based organization that helps women victims of trafficking, says that the women advertising on these websites are often homeless and traumatized. They never earn profit from this business, rather all the money goes into the pockets of middlemen and criminals. The Commissioner has now demanded from the government that age verification should be made mandatory on these sites, online security laws should be made more stringent and accountability should be fixed for those who are making profits from this business. The British government has also given its response in this matter saying that sexual exploitation is a curse, whether it is online or offline. The Prime Minister has announced that tech companies will now have to remove objectionable pictures and advertisements that have been shared without consent within 48 hours.
