Delhi: Last chance for taxpayers! ‘Sunio’ scheme, pay property tax without interest and penalty till this day

If you own property in the capital Delhi and have not yet paid your due property tax, hurry up as this is the last chance to deposit property tax without interest and penalty. The last date for depositing tax without interest and penalty under Delhi Municipal Corporation’s property tax scheme ‘Sunio’ is ending on March 31. In such a situation, the Corporation has appealed to all eligible property owners and occupiers to take full advantage of this opportunity and settle their outstanding taxes on time.

Complete exemption from interest and penalty, but last chance

Under ‘Sunio Scheme’, taxpayers can pay their outstanding property tax without any interest and penalty. He warned that this scheme will not be taken forward after March 31, 2026. In such a situation, this may prove to be the last opportunity for the taxpayers.

No increase in late fee rate

Giving relief to the taxpayers, the corporation informed that there has been no increase in the rate of late fee. It has been kept the same as the rate of 5 percent applicable in the earlier extended period i.e. in the month of February. This will not impose additional financial burden on taxpayers.

More than 1.87 lakh taxpayers availed benefits

According to Municipal Corporation data, till March 1, 2026, 1,87,425 taxpayers have taken advantage of this scheme. A total property tax of Rs 1089.97 crore has been collected from these. Of these, Rs 211.44 crore was collected from 1,34,666 residential properties and Rs 878.52 crore was collected from 52,759 non-residential properties. This shows that the plan is getting widespread support.

On what conditions will full exemption be given?

Under ‘Sunio Scheme’, complete waiver of interest and penalty on property tax liability before the financial year 2020-21 is being given. The condition for this is that the taxpayer should deposit the basic property tax for the current financial year 2025-26 and the last five financial years i.e. from 2020-21 to 2024-25 without interest and penalty.

Large participation of first time tax payers

Under this scheme, 1,02,201 new taxpayers have paid property tax for the first time. Rs 395.96 crore has been collected from these first time taxpayers. This indicates that the scheme has played an important role in bringing new taxpayers also into the tax net.

Record collection in the current financial year

In the current financial year till March 1, 2026, a total tax of Rs 2893.86 crore has been collected from 12,78,445 taxpayers including the ‘Sunio’ scheme. In the same period last year, Rs 1937.44 crore was collected from 10,56,528 taxpayers. This shows an increase of 49.37 percent in tax collection and 21 percent increase in the number of taxpayers.

Better performance than last year

In the financial year 2024-25, a total of Rs 2132.29 crore was collected from 11,33,161 taxpayers. The collection so far in the current financial year is much more than this figure. It is clear from this that ‘Sunio’ scheme has played an important role in increasing revenue and improving tax compliance.
