Dehradun: Ambala’s promising doctor lost due to HOD’s harassment, committed suicide by injecting herself in the car

A very painful and shocking incident has come to light from Shri Guru Ram Rai (SGRR) Medical College located in Dehradun, the capital of Uttarakhand. 26-year-old Dr. Tanvi, who was doing MS from the Department of Ophthalmology here, allegedly ended her life after being fed up with the harassment of her new HOD.

On the night of March 24, Tanvi was found unconscious in her car, with a cannula in her hand and empty bottles and injections lying nearby. The promising doctor, who was about to complete her MS degree in July, lost out to the system and alleged mental harassment.

The phase of harassment started after the arrival of the new HOD

Dr. Tanvi, resident of Ambala, Haryana, was a topper from first class to MBBS. According to father Dr. Lalit Mohan, Tanvi’s studies were going smoothly till December 2025. But after Dr. Priyanka Gupta became the new HOD in the department, Tanvi started being targeted. The father has made several serious allegations in the complaint given to the police:

  • Number disconnection and threats: Restrictions were imposed on keeping in touch with the old HOD and numbers in the log book started being disconnected without any reason. Threats were given to fail in the final exam.
  • Demand for illegal money: Despite the full fees being deposited, separate money was demanded from Tanvi.

According to the father, in the last four months, he himself went to the college 3-4 times and met the HOD and requested him not to play with his daughter’s future, but no hearing was held.

That dreadful night and the father’s struggle

On the evening of 24 March, Tanvi had left for night shift. At 11:15 pm, she messaged her mother that she would reach home in one and a half hours. The family got worried after seeing the message instead of the call. Father Lalit Mohan immediately took a car from Ambala and left for Dehradun. At around 2:30 in the night, he reached the college and started searching for his daughter. Tanvi’s car was seen parked on the roadside. On looking inside, the daughter was lying unconscious on the driving seat and the car was locked from inside. The father broke the glass with a stone and took the daughter out and took her to the hospital, where doctors declared Tanvi dead at around 3 am on March 25.

FIR lodged against HOD, arrangement for anticipatory bail

On the complaint of the father, Dehradun Police has registered an FIR against the accused Dr. Priyanka Gupta under section 108 (abetment of suicide) of the Indian Justice Code (BNS). There is a provision of maximum punishment of 10 years in this section.

CO Patelnagar Ankit Kandari said that the matter is being thoroughly investigated from every aspect. According to sources, to avoid arrest, the accused doctor has started preparations to apply for anticipatory bail in the sessions court.

Last farewell given in Ambala

Dr. Tanvi was cremated with tears in eyes on Thursday (26 March) morning at Rambagh in Ambala City. The same father who had cherished the dream of seeing his daughter become a doctor, today lit the funeral pyre of his daughter with a heavy heart.
