The serious allegations against Allahabad High Court Judge Yashwant Verma will now be investigated afresh. Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla on Wednesday reconstituted the three-member inquiry committee. This action has been taken as part of the impeachment process that started after bundles of burnt cash were recovered from Justice Verma’s Delhi residence in March 2025.
The notification of the Lok Sabha Secretariat states, ‘With partial amendment, the Speaker, Lok Sabha, has reconstituted this committee with effect from 6 March 2026. The objective of this committee is to investigate the grounds on which impeachment has been demanded for the removal of Justice Yashwant Verma. The committee consists of the following members:
- Justice Arvind Kumar, Supreme Court of India
- Justice Shri Chandrashekhar, Chief Justice of Bombay High Court
- B.V. Acharya, Senior Advocate, Karnataka High Court
What is the matter?
Last year in March 2025, a fire broke out in the store of the official residence of Justice Yashwant Verma. While extinguishing the fire, a large amount of unaccounted cash was reportedly recovered from the store room, in which several bundles of currency notes were severely burnt. At that time Justice Verma was posted in Delhi High Court. The incident had sparked widespread debate in the judiciary and political circles.
Justice Verma’s role in this case came to light in the internal investigation of Delhi High Court, after which he was transferred to Allahabad High Court. This issue made headlines from Parliament to the Supreme Court. With the reconstitution of the committee, it has become clear that the administration is in no mood to do any laxity in this matter.
Earlier, the Supreme Court had rejected the petition of Justice Yashwant Verma implicated in the cash scandal. In this petition, he had challenged the Lok Sabha Speaker’s acceptance of the motion to remove him from his post and the validity of the parliamentary panel investigating corruption against him.
