New Delhi. England’s Test captain Ben Stokes has suffered serious facial injuries after being hit by a cricket ball. The 34-year-old all-rounder has posted a picture on Instagram in which his right eye is badly swollen and blue. There are scratches on the cheeks and lips, and a bandage on the nose.
While sharing his photo in his Instagram story, Ben Stokes wrote in the caption, ‘You should see the condition of the cricket ball.’ He also added a laughing face emoji. Stokes returns to England after a disappointing Ashes tour that ended with a 4-1 defeat to Australia last month.
Although Stokes has made it clear that he wants to continue captaining the red-ball team, his position remains uncertain amid the review by the England and Wales Cricket Board. England coach Brendon McCullum has described some controversies after the Ashes as ‘unfair’. Stokes is no longer a part of England’s white-ball team and will not play in the T20 World Cup in India and Sri Lanka starting this week.
Before the start of England’s domestic Test season, which begins against New Zealand at Lord’s on 4 June (Stokes’ 35th birthday), he could play for Durham in the opening round of the County Championship. Stokes is recovering from an adductor muscle injury sustained in Australia during the fifth Ashes Test in Sydney in January.
Due to this injury, he could not bowl in the second innings of Australia and this tour was disappointing for the England captain. He bowled well throughout the series, but had to struggle a lot in batting. Stokes’ groin problem is one of the many injuries that have affected his career. In 2024, he tore his hamstring twice and last season he was sidelined from the home series against India due to a shoulder problem. He also had surgery for a knee problem in late 2023. Stokes has a contract with England until the end of the 2027 domestic season and can now avoid being involved in ‘The Hundred’ auction next month, giving him a chance to focus on the Test team.
