New Delhi. Sunrisers Leeds, owned by Chennai-based media conglomerate Sun Group, was in trouble after buying Pakistan spinner Abrar Ahmed in The Hundred auction. Abrar has become the first Pakistan cricket team player to join an Indian-owned franchise in The Hundred. Abrar’s signing was surprising considering the political tension between India and Pakistan. Sunrisers bought Abrar for 1,90,000 pounds (about Rs 2.34 crore). He will not be the only Pakistani cricketer to play in an Indian-owned T20 franchise.

However, in other foreign leagues, Pakistani players have played in the teams of Indian owners. Pakistani cricketer Mohammad Aamir, who was found guilty of match fixing, and Usman Tariq, who was in the news for his action, have played for Trinbago Knight Riders. This team belongs to the group led by Shahrukh Khan, Juhi Chawla and Jai Mehta. Both are also owners of Kolkata Knight Riders in the Indian Premier League.

Former Pakistan all-rounder Imad Wasim played for Seattle Orcas in Major League Cricket (MLC) in 2025. This team belongs to GMR Group which is the co-owner of IPL franchise Delhi Capitals. Imad has also previously played for the KKR-owned Abu Dhabi franchise in the 2023-24 season. Pakistani cricketer Usman Khan played for MI Emirates in ILT20 in 2025. The owners of this team are also Mumbai Indians.

Sun TV completes the acquisition of The Hundred franchise, formerly known as Northern Superchargers. For this, he bought 49 percent stake from England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) and the remaining 51 percent stake from Yorkshire.

At the beginning of IPL, Pakistani players were selected in the Indian Premier League but after that they were banned due to the deteriorating relations between the two countries. Players like Shoaib Akhtar, Wasim Akram, Sohail Tanvir, Shahid Afridi, Shoaib Malik and Misbah Ul Haq have played in the tournament.
