West Asia LIVE: Israel and Lebanon signed peace agreement, America played the role of mediator

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio on Friday announced an initial peace agreement between Israel and Lebanon. This is being said as the first step towards peace after the conflict that has been going on for several months. This conflict was going on between Israel and the Lebanese extremist organization Hezbollah. Complete details of this agreement have not been made public. It has been signed by Israel’s Ambassador to the US, Yekiel Leiter, and Lebanon’s Ambassador to the US, Nada Hamadeh.

Lebanese Ambassador Nada Hamadeh said the framework is a first step toward restoring Lebanon’s sovereignty and territorial integrity. Its purpose is to stop the fighting completely and permanently, so that people can return to their homes and peace, security and prosperity can be established in the country.

Israeli Ambassador Yechiel Leiter said that the ultimate goal of this agreement is to establish peace between the two countries. He said that this would be a real peace in which both countries would be safe. Each other’s sovereignty will be respected. He also said that Iran and Hezbollah have been kept apart in this trilateral agreement and now the path towards peace is moving forward.

This new conflict began when Israel and the US launched military action against Iran on February 28, a few days after Hezbollah fired rockets at Israel. After this, Israel entered Lebanon and increased its control. More than 4,000 people have died in Israeli attacks in Lebanon since March. At the same time, 37 Israeli soldiers have been killed in Lebanon or northern Israel during the fighting. There was a slight reduction in conflict between the two sides in recent times. But tensions increased again after Israel attacked Hezbollah targets in southern Lebanon.

Hezbollah was not part of this conversation. There had been ceasefire agreements several times in the past, but they could not be implemented on the ground. Lebanese officials say their main demand in the talks is the withdrawal of Israeli forces from southern Lebanon, while Israel’s main emphasis is on the disarmament of Hezbollah.
