A major step has been taken towards rejuvenating Sanjay Lake, which is one of the major natural heritages of East Delhi. Work will be done in two phases for the comprehensive redevelopment of this 52-acre artificial lake and the 165-acre protected forest area around it.
On Thursday, Lieutenant Governor Taranjit Singh Sandhu visited the project site and reviewed the progress and directed the concerned departments to complete the work within the stipulated time.
Maximum focus will be on eliminating water crisis
During the inspection, the Lieutenant Governor termed the issue of insufficient water reaching the lake as serious and directed the Delhi Jal Board to immediately repair its pipeline. He clarified that regular supply of treated water from Dallupura Sewage Treatment Plant should be restored soon, so that the water level of the lake remains stable.
Apart from this, instructions were given to the officials to develop a system to transport the stagnant water at various places to the lake. Use of modern technologies to increase groundwater recharge, make walking routes safe and improve the water quality of the lake will also be an important part of the project.
The first phase of work will be completed by August 2026
The target has been set to complete the first phase of the Kayakalp scheme by August 2026. During this period, the system of supplying water to the lake will be strengthened. Besides, measures will be taken to increase ground water supply, damaged walkways will be repaired and water holding capacity will be improved by removing the grass growing at the bottom of the lake.
Beautification and improvement in water quality will take place in the second phase.
The second phase of the project will be completed by May 2027. In this, the surrounding water sources will be connected to the lake on a large scale. Besides, aerators and fountains will be installed to improve the quality of the reservoir, improve the chemical properties of water and beautification of the lake.
Green area will also expand
Special attention will be given to strengthening the environment of not only the lake but also the entire area. Under this, more than 5,000 saplings of local species will be planted in the protected forest area, which will increase the green cover and also promote biodiversity.
Let us tell you that Sanjay Lake is located between the residential colonies of Kalyanpuri-Trilokpuri in the east and Mayur Vihar Phase-2 in the west. After completion of the proposed work, this area will not only be more prosperous from environmental point of view, but will also develop as a better public space for the local people.
