
In the meeting of BRICS Foreign Ministers, Indian Foreign Minister S Jaishankar emphasized the growing role of BRICS amid the global situation, economic challenges and the changing international system. In his address at the meeting, Jaishankar said that the world is currently going through a very uncertain and complex phase, where continuous conflict, economic instability, trade and technology related challenges are affecting the global scenario. He said that at such a time, the expectations of emerging markets and developing countries have increased from BRICS and the organization is expected to play a constructive and balancing role in global stability.
This meeting is not just a formal dialogue
The Foreign Minister said that this meeting between the BRICS countries is not just a formal dialogue, but an important opportunity to share views on global and regional developments and develop common strategies. He said that in today’s world, multilateral cooperation and diplomatic dialogue has become more important than ever.
How many meetings have been organized so far under the chairmanship of India?
Jaishankar said that till now more than 80 BRICS meetings have been organized under the chairmanship of India, in which all the member countries have actively participated. Through these meetings, work has been done to strengthen cooperation and advance dialogue in various fields. He said that India is maintaining constant contact and dialogue with partner countries to make BRICS a more inclusive and cooperative platform.
What did you say about the new member countries?
He also described the institutional development of BRICS and integration of new member countries as important. Jaishankar said that with the expansion of the organization, discussions have been taken forward on updating its existing structure and mechanism. He clarified that for the smooth progress of BRICS, it is necessary that the new member countries fully understand and support the common consensus, priorities and core principles of the organization.
Development related issues still a matter of concern
The Foreign Minister said that development related issues still remain a major concern at the global level. Many countries are facing challenges like energy security, food crisis, fertilizer availability, access to health services and financial resources. He said that BRICS can play an important role in providing effective solutions to these countries.
Jaishankar also emphasized on economic strength and reliability of supply chain. He said that stable and diversified markets are essential for the strength of the global economy. Along with this, while describing climate change as a serious global challenge, he said that while pursuing sustainable development, it is necessary to follow the principles of equality and common but differentiated responsibilities.
Referring to rapidly changing technologies, he said that technological changes are affecting global governance and economic structures. Therefore, it is important that these technologies are used for inclusive development and better global governance.
This meeting of BRICS Foreign Ministers is being held on 14 and 15 May. India has assumed the chairmanship of BRICS from January 1 this year. Earlier, India has also hosted the BRICS summit in 2012, 2016 and 2021.
