Trinamool Congress has approached the Supreme Court. This step has been taken against an order of the Kolkata High Court. The High Court had rejected the Trinamool Congress’ petition on April 30. This petition was related to the counting of votes in the West Bengal Assembly elections. Trinamool Congress had objected to the deployment of observers in the counting of votes. The party had challenged the decision to make only central government employees observers. This also included employees of public sector undertakings (PSUs).

This decision can affect impartiality – TMC

Trinamool Congress believed that this decision could affect impartiality. He had raised serious questions on this in his petition. The party had argued that this move was against the democratic process. Now Trinamool Congress has decided to take this important matter to the Supreme Court.

What is the basis of TMC’s petition?

Trinamool Congress had argued in its petition that the deployment of only central employees is unfair. He said that this could raise doubts on the fairness of the vote counting process. The party had also demanded inclusion of state government employees as observers. He had challenged this particular decision of the Election Commission.

Appeal to the Supreme Court

Trinamool Congress has appealed to the Supreme Court to challenge the High Court order. The party has expressed hope that the Supreme Court will seriously consider their arguments. They want to ensure equal participation of all parties in the vote counting process. This important matter will now be heard in the Supreme Court.

TMC made allegations of rigging

The political turmoil over the voting process has intensified in West Bengal. The ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC) has made serious allegations of vote rigging, while the opposition has rejected these claims and raised questions on the democratic system in the state. Meanwhile, the controversy regarding the decisions and arrangements of the Election Commission is also deepening. TMC leader Kunal Ghosh alleged that transparency was not being maintained in the election process. He said, ‘The Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) is distorting the facts and diverting attention from the real issues.’

Referring to a strong room located at Khudiram Anushilan Center in Kolkata, he claimed that suspicious activities were seen there. According to him, in the CCTV footage received by the media, some people were seen working with the ballot, while there was no presence of the candidates or their agents, which raises many questions. He also demanded that the media should also be given direct access to CCTV cameras to ensure transparency in the election process. Kunal Ghosh said, ‘Not only political parties or candidates, but also media organizations approved by the Election Commission should get the right to see the monitoring system of the strong room. This will help remove any kind of doubt and strengthen public confidence.

Voting again on May 2 at 15 polling stations

Under the West Bengal Assembly Elections 2026, re-polling will be held on May 2 at 15 polling stations of two assembly seats in South 24 Parganas district. The Election Commission has declared the voting held on April 29 as canceled at these centers and has issued an order for re-polling. TMC has also objected to the Election Commission’s decision to conduct re-polling at some booths. Kunal Ghosh said, ‘The voting was conducted peacefully and it is not appropriate to demand forced re-polling. At the booths where re-polling will be held, TMC will win with an overwhelming majority. Let us tell you that voting was held on these seats on 29th April, but after the reports, it has been decided to conduct re-polling. The results of all the assembly seats are going to be revealed on May 4, for which extensive preparations have been made.
