Indian-origin scientist Amit Kshatriya, who had a fascination for space while watching rocket launches in Houston in his childhood, has today reached the top position in NASA. As Associate Administrator of NASA, he is the agency’s most senior civilian official and serves as a key advisor to Administrator Jared Isaacman.

NASA held a press conference to announce the success of the Artemis 2 mission. During this, Amit Kshatriya was given the opportunity to speak first among the top five officers present on the stage. The feeling of pride among Indians was clearly visible after seeing an Indian origin scientist in this important role.

How was the childhood of a Kshatriya?

Born in Wisconsin, Kshatriya is the son of Indian immigrant parents. He earned a bachelor’s degree in mathematics from the California Institute of Technology and a master’s degree from the University of Texas at Austin. However, his childhood was spent in the city of Katy, near Houston, which he considers home.

How did interest in space arise?

Growing up near NASA’s Johnson Space Center, he witnessed many space launches, which shaped the course of his career. After studies, he worked in the oil-gas and medical sectors, but in 2003 he entered the space sector by joining the United Space Alliance.

Played important role in NASA

Kshatriya played many important roles in NASA like software engineer, robotics engineer and spacecraft operator. He made significant contributions to the robotic assembly of the International Space Station (ISS). From 2014 to 2017, he served as Space Station Flight Director, where he led global teams.



After this, from 2017 to 2021, he took charge of engineering, logistics and hardware programs as the Deputy and Acting Manager of the ISS Vehicle Office. In 2021, he was appointed to the Exploration Systems Development Mission Directorate at NASA Headquarters, where he played a key role in the return of manned vehicles to the Moon as part of the Artemis-I mission.

Also involved in Mars mission

He was also the Deputy Associate Administrator of the ‘Moon to Mars’ program, which aims to establish a long-term human presence on the Moon and prepare for future interplanetary missions. In September last year, he was appointed Associate Administrator of NASA.

He has been awarded the NASA Outstanding Leadership Medal for his outstanding leadership. Apart from this, he also received the ‘Silver Snoopy’ award, which is given to astronauts for their contribution to flight safety.
