Delhi High Court has once again shown strictness against street vendors in Delhi’s famous commercial hub Nehru Place. The court has clearly said that Nehru Place District Commercial Complex is already declared a no-vending and no-hawking zone, hence no unauthorized street vendors can be allowed here. The court rejected the petition of two vendors and directed the Delhi Municipal Corporation to take immediate action and remove all illegal vendors from the area.
Vendors had filed a petition in Delhi High Court
Two vendors had filed a petition in the Delhi High Court demanding that they should not be stopped from setting up their shop in front of the Mansarovar Building in Nehru Place. He said that he has been working as a street vendor here since the beginning of 2000 and he should get protection under the Street Vendors Livelihood Protection and Street Vending Regulation Act 2014. But the court said that this matter has been heard several times before and every time it has been made clear that vending is not allowed in Nehru Place.
Petitioner’s name not included in the official list – HC
Delhi High Court said that the names of the petitioners are not included in the official list in which the names of recognized vendors are recorded. The court also said that the petitioners had already approached the High Court and the Supreme Court with similar demands, but they did not get any relief from there either. Despite this, it is not appropriate to knock on the court’s door again and again. For this reason, the court also imposed a fine of Rs 10,000 on both the petitioners.
What instructions did the High Court give to MCD?
During the hearing, when the lawyer told that the petitioners are still vending in Nehru Place. So the court expressed surprise at this. The court said that this is completely against the orders given earlier. The court directed the MCD to take immediate action to ensure that no unauthorized vendor can do business in the Nehru Place area.
