
There has been a change in the weather patterns in North-West India due to the influence of the active Western Disturbance over Northern Iran and the adjacent Caspian Sea. There has been heavy snowfall in the higher reaches of Jammu and Kashmir and Himachal Pradesh and rain in the valley and plains. Sporadic rain with strong wind and thunder has been recorded in the plains states including Punjab and Haryana. There is a possibility that the weather pattern will remain like this in the coming week. Yellow alert of storm has been issued in Shimla, Kullu and Mandi of Himachal Pradesh on Monday.
According to the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD), strong cyclonic winds are blowing at lower tropospheric levels over north-western Rajasthan and surrounding areas. A low pressure area is lying in the lower tropospheric level from north-western Rajasthan to northern Madhya Pradesh. A new western disturbance is likely to become active over northwest India on April 2. Due to the impact of these weather systems, light rain occurred in Jammu and Kashmir, Ladakh, Gilgit, Baltistan, Muzaffarabad on Sunday. Light rain occurred in Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Punjab, Haryana, Eastern and Western Rajasthan and hail fell at some places.
How will the weather be in Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand?
According to IMD, there is a possibility of light rain and snowfall with thunderstorms and wind speed of 30-50 km per hour on March 30 and April 2-3. The situation will be similar in Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand on April 4 also. There is also a possibility of hailstorm in Uttarakhand on March 30. Scattered to moderate rainfall with thunderstorms, lightning and gusty winds reaching 30-50 kmph are likely over Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, Delhi, Uttar Pradesh and Rajasthan during March 30-31. At the same time, there is a possibility of thunderstorm, lightning and strong wind with sporadic to widespread rainfall in Northeast India and adjacent Eastern India this week. Sporadic heavy rainfall may also occur over Northeast India during March 30 to April 1. Scattered rainfall along with thunderstorms, lightning and strong winds are likely over South Peninsular India this week.
Himachal Pradesh: Snowfall in Rohtang
Rohtang Pass and other high altitude areas of Himachal Pradesh received snowfall on Sunday. Snowfall occurred on the higher peaks in Kullu and Lahaul-Spiti districts from Sunday morning to afternoon. There was 20 cm snowfall in Rohtang Pass, 3 cm in Koksar, 15 cm in Shikunla, 15 cm in Kunzum Pass and 20 cm in Baralacha. Vehicular movement remained closed from Shinkula Top due to snowfall. Vehicular movement from the tourist city Manali towards Atal Tunnel Rohtang remained disrupted till afternoon. It rained in middle and lower areas including Shimla, Dharamshala. Due to this, the cold has once again increased in Himachal Pradesh.
Srinagar-Leh and Bandipora-Gurez highway closed
In Jammu and Kashmir, there was rain in the plains and snowfall in the mountains on Sunday morning. Srinagar-Leh National Highway and Bandipora-Gurez road have been closed due to snowfall. According to the Meteorological Department, there are chances of light rain and snowfall till March 31. There is also a possibility of avalanche and landslide in some areas.
Mercury also dropped in Punjab-Haryana
A drop in temperature was recorded after light rain in Punjab and Haryana on Sunday. The Meteorological Department said that there was light rain in Chandigarh, the common capital of both the states, due to which the temperature dropped there. However, this spell of rain has created concern among farmers in the region, as they fear that the standing wheat crop could be damaged if the rains are accompanied by strong winds.
