
Police have registered a case under serious sections against Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) zonal director Amit Ghawte and his team in connection with the suicide of famous builder Gurunath Chichkar based in Belapur, Navi Mumbai. This FIR has been registered at NRI Sagari Police Station on the basis of the written statement of Dr. Kiran Gurunath Chichkar (56), wife of the deceased. Police have registered a case in this matter under sections 108 (abetment of suicide), 308(3) (extortion), 352, 351(2) and 3(5) of the Indian Justice Code (BNS).
Dr. Kiran Chichkar told in his statement that the incident started on 2 February 2025, when NCB officer Akash Malik reached his house without any prior notice with a team of 15-20 people. He was not at home at that time. It is alleged that the officers beat the house servant, snatched his phone and forcibly searched the house. During this, the team seized Rs 2 lakh in cash, precious watches and important documents like passport and bank statements from the house without any seizure list (Panchnama).
Ghawte threatened to confiscate property – Dr. Kiran
According to the complaint, Zonal Director Amit Ghawte mentally tortured Gurunath Chichkar. Dr. Kiran alleges that Ghawte had threatened her husband that if he wanted to remove the names of his children from the case, he would have to pay Rs 10 to 15 crores. If the money was not paid, the entire family was implicated in a false drugs case and threatened to be sent to jail and their property confiscated.
The victim has made serious allegations not only against NCB but also against senior officer of ANC (Anti Narcotics Cell) Belapur, Sandeep Nigde. According to the statement, Nigde came to the builder’s office and abused him in front of everyone and demanded money. They had threatened to bring the money or present the children, otherwise they would put you and your wife in jail.
Husband was under mental pressure due to threats- Kiran
Dr. Kiran alleged that Gurunath Chikkar was under deep mental pressure due to continuous threats and harassment. Due to this stress, his health deteriorated on April 21 and he had to be admitted to Apollo Hospital. Ultimately, on 25 April 2025, he committed suicide by shooting himself in the head in his office. Police have also found a suicide note from the spot, in which the names of the officers who were harassing them are written.
Dr. Kiran told the police that before committing suicide, her husband had sent a complaint to the Navi Mumbai Police Commissioner, Chief Minister and Home Minister, citing threat to his life, but no relief was received. Now the police have registered an official FIR in this matter and started investigation.

So far 9 arrests have been made in this case – Ghawte
NCB zonal director Amit Ghawte told ABP News that NCB Mumbai had seized cocaine and other narcotics from Belapur in January 2025, after which a complaint was filed under the NDPS Act in July 2025. The main leader of this entire gang was Naveen Gurunath Chichkar, who was extradited from Malaysia and arrested.
He further said that a total of 09 arrests have been made so far in this case. Apart from accused Uday Gawande getting interim bail of 2 months on family grounds, no other accused has got bail in this case so far. Through this action, NCB Mumbai has completely exposed the international syndicate run by Chichkar.
Further said that during the financial investigation of the case, Chichkar’s properties worth Rs 10.6 crore have been frozen. This order to freeze assets has also been confirmed by SAFEMA Mumbai. NCB Mumbai clearly says that the law has been followed in this entire court and investigation process and no illegal action of any kind has been taken.
