The political temperature has risen before the voting for Assam Assembly elections on April 9. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has made a scathing attack on Congress and raised questions on its relevance. Sarma taunted that Congress is not in a position to form government in India, it can probably form government in Bangladesh or Pakistan. He claimed that except Bangladeshi infiltrators, no local person would vote for Congress. The Chief Minister stressed that the people have seen the last 60 years of rule and are now with the development works of the BJP.

People are fed up with BJP’s politics of fear: Gaurav Gogoi

Assam Congress President Gaurav Gogoi rejected the Chief Minister’s claims and said that there is a wave of change in the state. According to Gogoi, the public wants to get out of the BJP’s politics of fear and the opposition alliance is getting huge support. He said that people are excited with the imagination of a new Assam.

Himanta Biswa Sarma himself told when will he enter national politics

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has openly responded to the speculations about his entry into national politics. He clearly said that at present his entire focus is on Assam and he will take steps at the national level only when the time and circumstances are favourable. In response to a question, Sarma said in a light tone that he will leave when you people drive him away, but at the same time he also made it clear that his priority right now is to complete the politics of the state and the changes going on here.

The Chief Minister indicated that his political agenda is long term. He said that it is necessary to first weaken the backbone of the entrenched structures in Assam politics. According to him, the changes that have taken place so far are at the superficial level and their deep impact will be visible in the coming five years. He said, right now the impact is only superficial, it has to reach the core.

Long term view on national politics

Himanta also made it clear that entering national politics is definitely a part of his long-term plan, but it will not happen immediately. He said that he will not move forward until his political strategy is completely successful in the state. First the situation here will have to be changed, only then the future direction will be decided.
