
So far 16 people have died after a passenger bus fell into a river in Bangladesh. The accident occurred at around 5:15 pm on Wednesday at Daulatdiya Terminal in Rajbari district, when the bus was trying to board the ferry. Meanwhile, due to sudden loss of balance, the bus fell straight into the Padma river.
There were 40 passengers in the bus at the time of the incident.
According to the information received, there were about 40 passengers in the bus, including many children. All these people were returning to Dhaka after celebrating Eid holidays. Relief and rescue operations were started immediately after the accident. After about six hours of hard work amidst very difficult conditions and bad weather, the bus was pulled out of the river with the help of a crane.
14 bodies recovered from the bus, two bodies taken out by divers
When the bus was taken out, 14 bodies were found inside it, whereas before that divers had recovered the bodies of two women. In this way, a total of 16 people have been confirmed dead. Many people are still missing and their search is going on. Teams of Army, Police, Fire Service and Coast Guard are jointly conducting the search operation.
A boat hit the ferry while loading
According to eyewitnesses, when the bus was moving towards the ferry, a small boat (utility ferry) hit the pontoon. Due to this the bus driver lost his balance and the bus fell straight into the river. Some people managed to swim out or were rescued, but most of the passengers remained trapped inside the bus.
PM Tariq Rehman ordered investigation
It is being told that many passengers belonged to the same family. The people who were standing outside the bus were saved, but their own people drowned inside the bus, making the situation extremely painful. Seeing the seriousness of the incident, Bangladesh Prime Minister Tariq Rahman immediately contacted the authorities to get information and ordered an investigation into the accident.
