Bengal Election: Doctor, social worker, singer and journalist in BJP’s first list; Young candidates also included on 36 seats – BJP Releases First Candidate List In West Bengal: Doctors, Social Workers, Journalists Included

While releasing the first list of candidates for the upcoming assembly elections, the Bharatiya Janata Party has tried to cater to many sections in terms of social and professional background. The party declared candidates for a total of 144 seats.

In which, along with politics, people associated with education, social service, health, media and army have also been given tickets.

On the basis of profession, the party’s list includes 23 teachers, 8 social workers, 6 advocates, 5 doctors and 3 journalists. Apart from this, 3 spiritual leaders and 3 retired soldiers have also been made candidates. A cricketer, a retired administrative officer, a folk singer and a prominent person associated with social movements have also been given tickets in the list. According to political analysts, BJP has adopted a strategy to reach out to different social groups by including these classes.

The party has also tried to create a balance on the basis of social class. Of the declared candidates, 62 come from the general category, 20 from Other Backward Class (OBC), 48 from Scheduled Caste and 14 from Scheduled Tribe community. According to the seats, candidates have been announced for 99 general, 32 scheduled caste and 13 scheduled tribe reserved seats. In terms of political experience, the list includes 41 sitting MLAs, 3 former MLAs and 2 former MPs.

Young candidates included on 36 seats

Along with this, BJP has also tried to give place to youth and women. The party has given tickets to women candidates on 11 seats, while candidates below 40 years of age have been fielded on 36 seats. The most talked about seat in this list is considered to be Bhawanipur, where Leader of Opposition Shubhendu Adhikari will challenge Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee. Soumitra Chattopadhyay, who comes from the family of ‘Vande Mataram’ writer Bankim Chandra Chattopadhyay, has been made the candidate from Naihati seat. It is believed that BJP has adopted a strategy of balancing social, professional and political through the first list.
