A discovery found on the top of Mount Everest, which is called the roof of the earth and is situated at a height of 8848 meters, has shocked both scientists and common people. Recently viral pictures and reports on social media have shown that 450 million years old marine fossils have been found in the uppermost rocks of Everest.
These fossils belong to ancient marine creatures such as crinoids, trilobites, brachiopods and ostracods, which once lived in warm, shallow seas. This evidence suggests that the world’s highest point was once the bottom of the ancient Tethys Ocean!
What do scientists say?
According to scientists, the rocks at the top of Everest are sedimentary rocks named ‘Quomolangma Limestone’, which belong to the Ordovician period (488-443 million years ago). Shells, skeletons and prints of sea creatures are preserved in these rocks. A recent research team confirmed these fossils at an altitude of more than 13,000 feet, which indicate that these rocks were once formed on the floor of the Tethys Sea. The Tethys Sea was an ancient ocean spread between India and Asia, which has now disappeared.
