Indian Navy’s strength at sea has increased. The Navy has got another anti-submarine warfare ship Anjadeep. This third warship in the series of eight anti-submarine warfare ships with the capability to operate in shallow waters was commissioned into the Navy on February 27 in Chennai. Navy Chief Admiral Dinesh Kumar Tripathi attended the ceremony. The ship has been indigenously designed and built by Kolkata-based Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers (GRSE).
Designed as ‘Dolphin Hunter’
The ship is designed to act as a ‘Dolphin Hunter’, whose main objective is to detect, pursue and destroy enemy submarines in coastal areas. The ship is equipped with indigenous, state-of-the-art anti-submarine warfare systems. Admiral Tripathi formally commissioned the ship in the presence of senior naval officers, government officials and other officials at an official ceremony held at Chennai Port.
After whom was the warship named Anjadeep?
Anjadeep is named after Anjadeep Island located off the Karwar coast of Karnataka. This warship is made with more than 80 percent indigenous material. This will strengthen the country’s defense manufacturing capacity and reduce dependence on imports. Anjadeep is the new incarnation of the Navy’s old warship of the same name. The old warship was retired in 2003.
The 77 meter long ship is fitted with a high-speed water-jet propulsion system, enabling it to achieve a maximum speed of 25 knots for quick response and sustained operations. Built by Kolkata-based Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers, INS Anjadeep is a state-of-the-art ship specifically designed to meet the challenges of the littoral combat environment, the Navy said.
Apart from anti-submarine warfare role, the warship is also equipped to conduct coastal surveillance, low intensity maritime operations and search and rescue missions.
