New Delhi. In the ICC T20 World Cup, the Indian team made it to the Super 8 by winning all the group matches. The equation of their semi-final got spoiled with the shameful defeat against South Africa by 76 runs. At present, if we look at the points table after the first match, India’s position is worse than Pakistan. Team India has 1 point in its account after the match against New Zealand was washed out due to rain, while Team India’s points slot is empty. In such a situation, another defeat will raise questions about his survival in the tournament. In this match played at Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad on Sunday (22 February), India could score only 111 runs (18.5 overs) in response to the target of 188 runs.

This defeat against the South African team captained by Aiden Markram on Sunday has dealt a big blow to India’s hopes of reaching the semi-finals. To make it to the last four, Suryakumar Yadav’s team will now have to register big wins against Zimbabwe and West Indies in their remaining two Super 8 matches.

What path is left for India now?

The Indian team will play its second Super 8 match against Zimbabwe on Thursday (26 February) at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai. The match against West Indies will be held on Sunday (1 March) at Eden Gardens, Kolkata. If India loses even one of its remaining two matches, then its title journey will end in the Super 8 stage itself, because after the defeat against South Africa, Team India’s Net Run Rate (NRR) has gone down significantly.

Why did India lose to South Africa?

For India, opener Ishan Kishan faced four balls, but while chasing the target of 188 runs, he could not even open the account. Whereas number 3 batsman Tilak Verma was sent to the pavilion by Marco Janson for 1 run in 2 balls. World No. 1 T20 batsman Abhishek Sharma played an inning of 15 runs in 12 balls, but despite colliding with Keshav Maharaj, Corbin Bosch took a brilliant catch and dismissed him. Indian captain Suryakumar Yadav, Washington Sundar and Hardik Pandya also failed to play impressive innings despite good starts. For South Africa, Marco Janson took 4 wickets for 22 runs in 3.5 overs, while Keshav Maharaj sent three Indian batsmen to the pavilion.
