Congress On Global Tariff: Congress attacks India-US trade agreement, says – this deal is not a problem for the country – Us-india Trade Deal Has Become An Ordeal Congress Slams PM Modi After Trump’s Global Tariff Announcement

The US Supreme Court struck down sweeping global tariffs imposed by President Donald Trump. The court clearly said that the President does not have the right to impose tariffs on such a large scale. After this decision, there was a reaction in Indian politics also. Congress targeted Prime Minister Narendra Modi by linking it to the India-US trade agreement.

Congress alleges that the interim trade agreement between India and America is actually proving to be a problem for the country. The party says that this agreement was made out of compulsion and haste. Congress leaders said that if the Indian government had waited a little and allowed the Supreme Court’s decision to come, perhaps India would not have had to face an agreement with one-sided terms.

Congress argues that Prime Minister Modi made this agreement in a hurry to save his image and get rid of political pressure. The party claims that this may harm the economic interests of Indian farmers and the country. Overall, Congress is calling this trade agreement not a balanced one but a decision taken under pressure. He also praised the American justice system.

Serious allegations of Congress

Jairam Ramesh alleged that the India-US trade agreement was suddenly announced by America on the night of February 2, 2026. He raised the question as to what had happened in the Lok Sabha that afternoon, due to which the Prime Minister had to make an announcement from the White House. Congress claims that this agreement is harmful for the farmers of India and the sovereignty of the country.

Trump’s statement and tariff on India

Even after the Supreme Court’s decision, President Trump said that the deal with India will continue. He said nothing will change. India will pay tariffs and we will not. Trump also said that India reduced oil purchases from Russia at his request. Recently, America had announced to remove the 25 percent punitive tariff imposed on India and reduce it to 18 percent.

Congress gave this advice

Congress also demanded that Prime Minister Narendra Modi should put the India-US interim trade agreement on hold and renegotiate the terms of the deal. Jairam Ramesh further said that the government should clearly say that until a clear clarification is not received from the American side, there will be no import liberalization and it should be ensured that the interests of Indian farmers are not harmed.

Terms of the agreement and further developments

Under the interim trade framework, the US will charge 18 percent reciprocal tariff on imports from India. Earlier, 25 percent duty was imposed on oil purchases from Russia. Trump claimed that he also prevented India-Pakistan conflict through tariffs. Congress termed these claims as political rhetoric. At present this issue is heated in Parliament and political circles.
