Tariff used to stop conflict between India and Pakistan

US President Trump said that he used global tariffs to prevent conflict between India and Pakistan. Trump claimed that he has ended eight wars so far through tariffs, including those with serious, nuclear situations like India and Pakistan. Because of these tariffs we avoided huge losses. Trump quoted the Prime Minister of Pakistan as saying that his efforts saved approximately 35 million lives and strengthened America’s national security. However, India has consistently denied any third party interference in stopping the conflict with Pakistan. Trump has taken credit for stopping the India-Pakistan conflict more than 80 times since May 10 last year. He described the Supreme Court’s decision as deeply disappointing and said that some members of the court did not have the courage to take the right decision in the interest of the country, for which he feels ashamed.

What did the Supreme Court say on tariff policy?

The US Supreme Court, in its decision regarding Trump’s tariff policy, said that the President did not have the right to impose such comprehensive import duties under the IEEPA. The US Supreme Court has abolished Donald Trump’s reciprocal tariffs with this 6-3 decision. The decision is expected to have a cascading impact on global trade, businesses, consumers, inflation trends and household finances across countries.

Congress does not have the right to impose tariffs, not the President.

  • According to the US Constitution, the right to impose taxes and duties rests not with the President, but with the Congress.

  • However, Trump imposed tariffs on almost all US trading partners by invoking the International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEPA) without congressional approval.

  • The IEEPA gives the President the authority to regulate commerce only in the event of a national emergency.

  • Trump has also imposed some additional charges under other laws, which have nothing to do with this case.

  • These tariffs account for about a third of the revenue from Trump’s tariffs, according to government data from October to mid-December.

Trump tariff started 10 months ago

Let us tell you that the Trump administration had imposed reciprocal tariffs on many countries citing national emergency. Under these tariffs announced on April 2, 2025, heavy duties were also imposed on India. The total effective tariff rate imposed on India on buying oil from Russia had reached 50%, the highest for any country. Although this rate was reduced to 18% after the trade agreement between the US and India was finalized in January 2026, till then Indian exporters had to suffer huge losses.
