Five Rajya Sabha seats are going to become vacant in Bihar. Voting is to be held on 16 March (2026). With the release of the notification, politics has also started in Bihar. Bharatiya Janata Party and Janata Dal United have strong claims on five seats. Only after the results of Bihar Assembly elections, it was considered certain that out of the vacant Rajya Sabha seats, JDU will send its candidates to Rajya Sabha on two seats and Bharatiya Janata Party will send its candidates to Rajya Sabha on two seats. On another seat, both these parties will adjust their allies, but there are three parties contending on this one seat.
Who are the contenders except BJP-JDU?
Chirag Paswan’s party is at the first position in the race, Hindustani Awam Morcha is at the second position and Upendra Kushwaha’s party is at the third position. However, Upendra Kushwaha’s claim cannot be taken lightly. His claim is also strong because he has gone to Rajya Sabha from BJP quota. When his party got less seats in the 2025 assembly elections, the discussion intensified that Upendra Kushwaha may get one Rajya Sabha and one Bihar Legislative Council seat.
Talking about Chirag Paswan, during the Bihar Assembly elections, his party was claiming 35 seats. After the formula of seats in NDA was revealed, Chirag Paswan’s displeasure started becoming visible. For damage control, two prominent leaders were sent from Delhi to convince and manage Chirag Paswan. After this Chirag Paswan agreed on 29 seats. The party won 19 seats. In such a situation, one seat can be found in Rajya Sabha. During the elections, it was said about Chirag Paswan and his party that they had received assurance from BJP that they would be given a Rajya Sabha seat.
If Chirag gets the offer, who will he send to Rajya Sabha?
In such a situation, the biggest thing is who will Chirag Paswan send from his party? Because no party can anger Chirag Paswan in NDA. In such a situation, the one seat available can be given to LJPR. That means Chirag Paswan can send someone to Rajya Sabha. There is also discussion that if a seat in Rajya Sabha falls in LJP Ram Vilas’s court, then he can send his mother Reena Paswan to Rajya Sabha from this seat. Chirag Paswan and the party are internally preparing for one seat.
On the other hand, Jitan Ram Manjhi, who cursed the NDA alliance, is also a contender. He had raised questions during seat distribution during the assembly elections. In such a situation, he will also stake claim for a seat in Rajya Sabha.
