Gautam Gambhir will return to IPL! Rajasthan Royals gave a big offer- report
New Delhi. Indian cricket team coach Gautam Gambhir last mentored Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) in the Indian Premier League (IPL). When the team won the title in the year 2024, he played the role of mentor. Now the news is that he is going to get a chance to return to IPL again. According to the report of Dainik Jagran, one of the new owners of Rajasthan Royals has offered Gambhir not one, but three big roles.
According to the report, one of the three new shareholders of the Rajasthan franchise has sent Gambhir a proposal for the role of “partner, mentor and CEO”. The report said, “Most of the shareholders of Rajasthan Royals are selling their stake to the new owners. The deal is currently in the transfer stage. One of the new management of RR, the owner, has offered Gambhir a two to three percent stake along with the role of CEO and mentor.”
Can mentors become serious?
Gambhir cannot accept this offer as long as he remains the head coach of the Indian team. According to a Supreme Court decision, which is based on the recommendations of the Lodha Committee, a person cannot simultaneously hold a position in an IPL franchise and the Indian team, as this creates a conflict of interest.
If Gambhir accepts Rajasthan’s offer, he will have to resign from the post of India’s head coach. Sources close to the former Indian batsman did not comment on this, but indicated that he is committed to his current role. However, his contract as India’s head coach will end after the ODI World Cup to be held in South Africa in 2027.
Which IPL teams did Gambhir work with?
After retiring as a player, Gambhir has been associated with two IPL franchises. He worked as the mentor of Lucknow Super Giants from 2022 to 2023 and took the team to the playoffs in both the seasons. After this, he joined KKR in the same role in 2024 and then in July 2024, he became the head coach of India in place of Rahul Dravid. Gambhir is currently overseeing India’s T20 World Cup campaign. The current champion team has made it to the Super 8 by winning all three matches against America, Namibia and Pakistan in the group stage. This week they have one more group match against Netherlands.
