England beat Scotland

New Delhi: After tight bowling by Adil Rashid, Tom Banton’s unbeaten half-century helped England beat Scotland by 5 wickets in ICC T20 World Cup Group C. With this victory, England also kept its Super Eight hopes alive. After the defeat to West Indies, in the important match of Group C, two-time champions England, with the help of Rashid (three wickets for 36 runs) and Liam Dawson (two wickets for 34 runs), all out Scotland for 152 runs in 19.4 overs. Scotland were in a good position at 113 for three in 12.3 overs and were about to cross the 180-run mark. But the trend of the match changed due to the fall of five wickets in 14 runs.

Rashid derailed Scotland’s innings by taking three wickets, including that of captain Ricky Berrington (49). Dawson took two wickets in quick succession and Scotland’s entire rhythm was ruined. England, who set out to chase this small target, lost two wickets for 13 runs in the first two overs. But after this, Banton played a match-winning inning studded with four fours and three sixes in 41 balls. Will Jacques gave the victory in 18.2 overs by hitting a six and a four off Brad Wheel. England scored 155 runs for five wickets.

England’s decisive match will be against Italy

The England team had barely won against Nepal in its first match but lost to West Indies. With this win, it reached second place in the group after West Indies with four points. Now England will face Italy on Monday to secure a place in the Super Eight. England needed partnership and Banton got the support of Jacob Bethel (32 runs in 28 balls). Both of them handled the innings by adding 66 runs in 45 balls. Phil Salt (2) and Jos Buttler (3) were out early.

Banton got a lease of life on seven runs and he took advantage of it and played the winning innings. Davidson finally ended the partnership when Bethel’s slog-sweep shot went straight to backward point. Scotland controlled the run-rate and created pressure by taking the wicket of Harry Brook. Brook was caught by Brad Wheel at short fine leg while attempting a scoop, taking England’s score to 86 for four in 10.4 overs.

Rashid did wonders in bowling for England

Earlier, with three wickets of Rashid and two wickets of Dawson, the entire Scotland team was bundled out for 152 runs in 19.4 overs. Fast bowler Joffra Archer got two wickets. Scotland were in a good position at 113 for three and it looked as if the team would cross the 200-run mark with captain Berrington and Tom Bruce (24 runs) looking in good form. After giving 26 runs in his first two overs, Rashid changed the course of the match. He dismissed Berrington one run before his half-century.

In his next over, Rashid took two wickets in three balls in the form of Matthew Cross and Mark Watt. England’s spin pair took five wickets in four overs, reducing Scotland’s score from 113 for three to 127 for eight. The team lost five wickets for 14 runs in the middle overs. Jamie Overton (1 wicket for 23 runs) also bowled tightly from which Scotland failed to recover.

Joffra Archer took the initial wicket

England gave the initial shock thanks to the bowling of Archer (2 wickets for 24 runs) who dismissed openers George Munsey (04) and Brandon McMullan (00) in three balls inside the powerplay. Michael Jones (33 runs) tried to increase the score by hitting two fours and a six off Sam Curran in the last over of the powerplay, but was out in the same over.

Scotland’s score in the powerplay was 42 runs for three wickets. After this, Berrington and Bruce added 71 runs in 41 balls for the fourth wicket, due to which Scotland was in a good position. The pitch was providing extra bounce and pace, of which Archer took good advantage of in his initial spell. During this period, Archer also achieved an achievement, he became the third England fast bowler after Stuart Broad and Mark Wood to take 50 wickets in all three formats.
